Dear Parents and Carers

Clearly this week our hearts and minds have been focused on the families and friends of those involved in the appalling tragedy in Manchester; I have sent our condolences to the schools who we know have suffered terrible loss and injury. We know that our girls have been particularly affected by this unspeakable act, targeted as it was at an event similar to the many concerts and gatherings that our students regularly attend and enjoy. We have been encouraging our students to talk about their fears and anxieties, whilst we have no explanation for such a heinous crime we can be clear about the division, hatred and hostility that such attacks have sought to generate, not only in Manchester but also in Nice, London, Stockholm and Paris in recent times. We have therefore focused on ensuring that our core values of kindness and empathy have been reinforced this week and that we continue to embrace our differences and focus on the positive forces for good of love and friendship which we share and which therefore serve to unite us. Additionally, despite understandable caution and anxiety, we will continue to encourage our young people to live as they want to, to attend the events that bring them joy and excitement; because if we limit or restrict our lives as a result of these dreadful events, then the terrorists really will have won. I wrote last week that we will be marking the Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox. We will also use this occasion to raise funds for the Manchester Victims Appeal and I will share more details with you after half term.

We have said a very fond farewell to our Year 13 students this week. This year group have contributed so much to the school, they have been superb role models to our younger students and have been a delight to teach. They all have ambitious plans for the future and have worked very hard indeed to prepare for the exams which will help them take the next step towards achieving these. We wish them all well for the forthcoming exams and look forward to celebrating the end of their seven years with us at the Prom on 29 June.

Finally this week, we say good bye to Miss Sevenoaks who has been covering the maternity leave of Miss Saul in the PE Department. Miss Sevenoaks is a former student of ours and it has been fantastic to have her working for us this year. We wish her well for her new role at .

Have a lovely weekend.

Student News Rosebery School took part in The Young Reporter Scheme for the first time this year, a scheme created by Diana Jarvis and launched in 2008. Having worked in Journalism for many years, Diana wanted to create a scheme where students could try their hands working as reporters, giving them a real taster of what journalism is all about. Every article written is published and enables students to build up a portfolio for use with CVs and UCAS applications. Jasmine Helm-Stovell 11CY and Shaista Barkat 13E were two of this year’s top winners competing against hundreds of other students.

As part of their prize they will be invited to attend an undergraduate day at Kingston University to experience what it is like to work on a real live paper with their articles being produced and published in the London Comet.

Many congratulations to Jasmine and Shaista for such a great achievement.

KS3 Exams

Students at KS3 will deliberately be sitting challenging exams after half term in order to fully prepare them for the rigorous demands of the new KS4 curriculum. Your daughters will be given ample preparation by their subject teacher and should they like to undertake any additional revision, they can ask their teacher for a practice paper.

Year 9 Reading List

A reading list is provided by the English and Media Centre with recommended wider reading to support the texts Year 9 students may study next year as part of their GCSE course. Following several queries at Parents’ Evening about reading to support students ahead of KS4, this would be an excellent starting point.
