Sports Round-up 2009/10 & HMS Illustrious What’s in it for me? Every year over £400,000 in prizes and £1 million of grants is invested into enhancing the lives of all in the Naval Service, with personal contributions of those taking part in sport, AT and challenging activities minimised. Your Sports Lottery also provides equipment - so even if you have not won a cash prize yet; you have almost certainly benefited from the funding provided.

Why do we need a Sports Lottery? The RN/RM Sports Lottery (RNSL) was set up in 1991 to generate non-public funds supporting all levels of sport, adventure training and recreation in the Naval Service. This is achieved by enhancing existing public funds (money provided through the MOD) and by granting funds for approved activities and equipment that fall outside the scope of public funding. of 10 prizes of £50 and the occasional enhanced first prize, such as new cars. HMS St. Albans Netball v Gibraltar Ladies HMS St. Albans first Netball fixture displayed much grit and determination by the girls onboard. A relatively inexperienced squad took on the versatile and experienced Gibraltar Ladies team at Devil’s Tower Camp. St. Albans ‘never say die’ attitude ensured that they stayed within touching distance of the Gib team up until half time trailing only 9-14. However, experience and match practice edged the Gib team further ahead, where the final score was 16-26. The team captain, Logs Morton was extremely proud of her team and paid tribute to the sportsmanship of the Gib team. St. Albans Netball team look forward to their next fixture on their deployment. The embarked force of 45 CDO RM had arranged a Tug-of-War competition onboard where they managed to organise 12 teams. The winning team, Zulu Company then challenged the Ocean Ship’s Company for a showdown of strength. The scene was set for ‘Green’ v ‘Blue’ in the hanger where a huge crowd turned out to spectate. After a fantastic effort by the ship’s company team, the honours went to Zulu Company by 2 pulls to 0. Not many Tug-of- War competitions are arranged within the Artic Circle, but this event displayed much grit and determination.

HMS Monmouth – 100 x 1 mile Relay – Mike Till Trophy HMS Monmouth whilst transiting the Red Sea, conducted the Fleet 100 x 1 mile trophy where funds were also raised for RN & RM Charities. The 100 runners, each completing 1 mile finished in an overall time of 10 hours, 44 mins & 24 secs. This result has been forwarded to the Fleet Competitions Co-ordinator to establish at a later date if Monmouth has won the Mike Till Trophy for the six month period between 1 Jan – 30 Jun 10. Best of luck to the ‘Black Duke’

HMS Lancaster v Gibraltar Combined Services Football HMS Lancaster had beaten the Gibraltar Combined Services 4-3 in 2008, so this was always going to be a keenly contested fixture in order to even things up from a Gibraltar point of view. However, with only seconds left on the clock LH McDonald calmly slotted home a superb goal from a wonderfully delivered cross into the six yard box. The Red Rose defeated their arch enemies 2-1 and so further extend their bragging rights for sometime to come.

Grass Roots coaching has been a great way to take the Phase 2’s out of a Trainee/Circuit atmosphere and teach them new sports that many had never tried before. We find new talent for our sports teams in these sessions and it’s also a fun learning environment that they all enjoy and are extremely keen to participate in.

Exercise Cairngorm Crusade 09 took place between 5 – 16 Oct as part of the RN’s commitment to the Exercise Cairngorm Crusade 2009 development of its people and the recognisable link between Adventurous Training (AT) and the Moral Where: Cairngorm National Park Component. Based at Rothiemurchus Lodge, near Aviemore in the Cairngorm National Park, participants of any standard had the opportunity to experience two five-day multi-activity packages which included Hill Walking, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, and Rock Climbing in one of the world’s most idyllic settings.

Arriving on Monday afternoon the teams were soon involved in a nine KM ‘Leg stretch’ through the Chalamain Gap, a loop commencing & finishing at Rothiemurchus Lodge. They were then divided into four groups for Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday and participated in three out of four of the following activities on a rotational (and preference where possible) basis:

1. Hill Walking, taking in Munro’s Ben Macdui & Cairngorm (18 km).

2. Mountain Biking within the Rothiemurchus estate, Badaguish & Glenmore Forrest (34 km).

3. Rock Climbing & Abseiling on Cuimmingston sea crags, Huntley’s Cave & Kingussie crags.

4. Kayaking / Canoeing on Loch Inch followed by transit of the River Spey.

Feedback from this years participants confirmed that Ex. Cairngorm Crusade was a resounding success. Although physically and mentally demanding, the week achieved its aim of taking people out of their comfort zone in a challenging but very enjoyable environment.

Planning is still in the very early stages; however it is intended to conduct Ex. Cairngorm Crusade again in 2010. Further details will be promulgated but for more information, contact the Regional AT Centre (North), Sportsdrome, HM Naval Base Clyde on 93255 3300.

The Hammer Strength Heavy Duty Half Rack is a key component in this type of training. The rack allows a safe and controlled working space to practice all the major lifts required, and has the added benefit of heave-bars, a spotting stand and pegs for resistance band-training.

Band training uses heavy duty rubberised bands to provide a constant tension throughout the range of motion. Sean recognises the versatility of equipment like the Half Rack, and its benefit to mainstream physical training as well as sport: “Seated resistance machines contribute very little functional training effect. We are rarely sat down when we are performing operational or sport- specific tasks”
