H1i. USHJA Varsity Open o/f 2’6”: Open to riders in grades 9-12. Riders should be capable of jumping 3’-3’6” on their usual mounts at home. Riders may have shown in any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101) recognized or unrecognized, at 3’3” or above. Coaches should be confident these riders could safely perform over a 2’6” Hunter or equitation course on an unfamiliar horse. Riders participating in Varsity Open Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Varsity Open Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Varsity Open Flat classes during the regular season.

H3i. USHJA Varsity Intermediate Equitation o/f 2’: Open to riders in grades 9-12. Riders should be capable of jumping 2’6”-3’ on their usual mounts at home. Intermediate riders may have shown in any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101) at 3’ (0.90 meters) or below in any discipline. Riders who have won 10 or more blue ribbons at 3’ (0.90 meters) at any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101) must be placed in Varsity Open O/F. Coaches should be confident these riders would be able to safely perform over 2’ hunter or equitation course on an unfamiliar horse. Riders participating in Varsity Intermediate Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Varsity Intermediate or Varsity Open Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Varsity Intermediate or Varsity Open Flat classes during the regular season.

H5i. USHJA Junior Varsity Novice Equitation o/f x-rails: Open to riders in grades 9-12. Riders should be capable of jumping 2’-2’6” on their usual mounts at home. Junior Varsity Novice riders may have shown in any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101) at 2’6” or below in any discipline. Riders who have won 10 or more blue ribbons at 2’6” at any Section 1 or Section 2 competition must be placed in the next higher appropriate level. Riders should have a minimum of one-year of professional instruction over fences. Coaches should be confident these riders would be able to safely perform over a x-rails Hunter or equitation course on an unfamiliar horse. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Junior Varsity Novice or Varsity Intermediate Flat classes during the regular season.

H9i. USHJA Future Intermediate Equitation o/f 2’: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the criteria for Hunt Seat Class 1 or 3. Riders participating in Future Intermediate Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Future Intermediate Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Future Intermediate Flat classes during the regular season.

H11i. USHJA Future Novice o/f x-rails: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the criteria for Hunt Seat Class 5. Riders participating in Future Novice Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Future Novice or Future Intermediate Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Future Novice or Future Intermediate Flat classes during the regular season.

Flat Classes

H2i. USHJA Varsity Open Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 9-12. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-16.

H4i. USHJA Varsity Intermediate Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 9-12. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-13.

H6i. USHJA Junior Varsity Novice Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 9-12. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-10.

H7i. USHJA Junior Varsity Beginner Equitation on the Flat Walk//Canter: Open to riders in grades 9-12 who are not eligible for Novice level jumping classes, but must be experienced enough to canter on an unfamiliar animal in a group. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1 through 7. A Beginner rider may not have shown over fences larger than 2’ in any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101). To be eligible for Class 7, a rider must have had at least one year continuous professional instruction, must demonstrate proficiency at the trot and canter, and be capable of competing on a variety of unfamiliar horses. Riders may not cross-enter Class 8 Walk/Trot.

H8i. USHJA Junior Varsity Beginner Equitation on the Flat Walk/Trot: Open to riders in grades 9-12 who meet criteria for Class 7 but are not yet ready to compete on an unfamiliar horse at a canter. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1 - 5. Individual points will be tracked in Class 8 Walk/Trot for post season qualification. No team points will be awarded in Class 8 Walk/Trot during regular or post season shows. Reference Rule 3205.2 for advancement criteria. Riders may not cross-enter Class 7 Walk/Trot/Canter.

H10i. USHJA Future Intermediate Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who are capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-13.

H12i. USHJA Future Novice Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who are capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-10.

H13i. USHJA Future Beginner Equitation on the Flat Walk/Trot/Canter: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the eligibility requirements of Hunt Seat Class 7. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1 - 7. Riders may not cross-enter Class 14 Walk/Trot.

H14i. USHJA Future Beginner Equitation on the Flat Walk/Trot: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the eligibility requirements of Hunt Seat Beginner Class 8. Individual points will be tracked in Class 14 Walk/Trot for post season qualification. No team points will be awarded in Class 14 Walk/Trot during regular or post season shows. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1 - 5. Riders may not cross-enter Class 13 Walk/Trot/Canter.

H15. USHJA Hunt Seat Championship Class

8504.4.1 The high point hunt seat rider in combined individual open fences and open flat from each zone during the regular season will be invited to participate in the Hunt Seat Championship class at the National Finals. If the top point earner is not able to attend, the next in line will be invited.

8504.4.2 Ties will be broken in this order: individual open fences points during regular season, total individual points earned at Regional Finals, total individual points earned at Zone Finals. In the event that multiple riders are still tied, they will compete in a ride off at Zone Finals. Only individual points count, not team points.

8504.4.3 One rider per each active zone will be invited, plus two more spots given to the top two point earners in combined open fences and open flat at Nationals. If a top point earner for a Zone is also a top point earner at Nationals then that additional spot will not be filled.

Hunt Seat Upper School Team Class Descriptions Jumping Classes

H1T. Varsity Open Equitation o/f 2’6”: Open to riders in grades 9-12. Riders should be capable of jumping 3’- 3’6” on their usual mounts at home. Riders may have shown in any Section 1 or Section 2 competition (Rule 3101) recognized or unrecognized, at 3’3” or above. Coaches should be confident these riders could safely perform over a 2’6” Hunter or equitation course on an unfamiliar horse. Riders participating in Future Intermediate Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Future Intermediate Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Future Intermediate Flat classes during the regular season.

H11T. Future Novice o/f x-rails: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the criteria for Hunt Seat Class 5. Riders participating in Future Novice Over Fences are expected to compete throughout the season in Future Novice or Future Intermediate Flat. To be eligible for post season competitions (individual or team) riders must have accumulated the required points and participated in a minimum of two (2) Future Novice or Future Intermediate Flat classes during the regular season.

H10T. Future Intermediate Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who are capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-13.

H12T. Future Novice Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who are capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1-10.

H13T. Future Beginner Equitation on the Flat: Open to riders in grades 6-8 who meet the eligibility requirements of Hunt Seat Class 7. These riders should be capable of performing Hunt Seat Tests 1 - 7. Riders may not cross-enter Class 14 Walk/Trot.

Hunt Seat Rider Tests

A rider must be prepared to perform the test appropriate for the class in which the rider is participating. Riders may be requested to perform the following tests collectively or individually during a show or competition. A Hunt Seat judge may choose from the following tests using tests 1-7 for Beginner riders, tests 1-10 for Novice riders, tests 1-13 for Intermediate riders, and tests 1-16 for Open riders. Instructions for performance of the test must be publicly announced. Any one or combination of appropriate or equivalent tests may be used.

1. Asked an appropriate horsemanship question that is tailored to the rider’s ability level 2. Halt 3. Sitting trot 4. Two point position at the walk and/or trot 5. Figure eight at trot, demonstrating change of diagonals 6. Figure eight at canter on correct , demonstrating simple change of lead 7. Change Horses 8. Ride without at the trot 9. Jump a shortened course 10. Trot a jump 11. Ride without stirrups at the canter 12. Change leads down center of ring, demonstrating simple change of lead 13. Half-turn on forehand and/or half-turn on haunches 14. Canter on the counter lead 15. Hand gallop 16. Jump without stirrups

Horsemanship Written Test Sponsored by United States Clubs, Inc. (USPC)

(No Entry Fee)

The Horsemanship Written Test was created to promote good horsemanship among IEA equestrian athletes. It is intended to compliment the IEA’s mission to educate younger equestrians in all areas of equestrian studies and focuses on the belief that horsemanship always comes first. This year’s test incorporates the following sources: 1. “The United States Pony Clubs Manual of Horsemanship: Basics for Beginners - D Level” 2. “The United States Pony Clubs Manual of Horsemanship: Intermediate Horsemanship C1 - C2 Levels” 3. “D Level Flash/Study Cards” (All USPC source materials are available from http://shopponyclub.org/) 4. IEA Rules and Regulations – available on the IEA website

How to Participate

§ The National Test will be available to all IEA members at the IEA National Finals and will be administered Saturday, April 18, 2020 in an area to be announced. (See time schedule.) There is no entry fee to take the test. § 1st – 8th in Middle School and Upper School categories will be recognized with ribbons and awards. § The top four highest scoring exhibitors will be invited to a hands-on Horsemanship Test Practicum on Sunday morning of the competition at approximately 7:30am to determine the overall winner. § The winner receiving the highest overall score with test and practicum combined, will be named on the perpetual trophy, and will receive a $250 monetary grant to further their equestrian education. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners will receive additional ribbons. All awards will be announced and presented on Sunday, April 19, 2020 prior to the Hunt Seat Flat Team Finals.

Sportsmanship The IEA was established to provide competitive and educational opportunities through equestrian athletics. Good horsemanship and honorable participation are priorities at every event. It is the responsibility of all attendees to foster a spirit of belongingness, an atmosphere of community enjoyment, and a mutual respect for all participants and their equine partners. General Rules

Responsibility: In exchange for entrance to and participation in the show, this entry constitutes an agreement and affirmation that the team making it, and each of its riders, coaches, trainers, and representatives shall accept and abide by the Rules and Regulations of the IEA and of the show, and that each rider, coach and team: (1) is a member in good standing of IEA; (2) is eligible as entered, and (3) will accept as final all rulings of IEA and the show steward (or committee) with respect to their conduct. Also, through participation each rider, rider’s parents/legal guardians, coach, trainer, and participant acknowledges THAT HORSES ARE INTRINSICALLY DANGEROUS AND UNPREDICTABLE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH, thus each agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless IEA, its officers, directors, members, employees, Executive Director, National Steward, agents and representatives, the Event Host Coordinator, the host team and facility, the show stewards, stewards committee members, the show judges, the show secretary, all show organizers and officials, and all persons, stables, and other providing facilities, horses or equipment for the show, other riders, coaches, teams and team sponsoring institutions, from any claim, action or suit, for injury, property damage or death sustained by the individual, rider, entity, coach, trainer, or participant while traveling to, from and around the show, while staying in the city for the show, during participation in the show and while at the show. This entry constitutes an acceptance of the hired officials at this event.

Format: The general format will follow the Rules and Regulations as established by the IEA unless otherwise stated. However, if a topic is not covered by these Rules and Regulations, the rules and regulations of the Intercollegiate Association (IHSA) and the United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (USEF) for the Hunt Seat Division and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) and the National Horse Association (NRHA) for the Western Division may be used as a reference for guidance in making an equitable decision under the circumstances. Any decisions made by a steward or show management shall be final.

Horses and Order of Go will be assigned by a random draw on the day of competition. Before jumping classes, each rider will be allowed only two warm-up fences, in the pattern posted by the show steward. Warm-up fences may only be changed by a steward or show official. All classes will be judged on equitation, and faults of the horse will not be judged. If a horse should perform so poorly that it is impossible to fairly judge the rider, the judge may request a re-ride. Any other requests for re-rides will be determined by the steward.

All Hunt Seat Riders must wear ATSM approved protective headgear whenever mounted.

Hunt Seat Awards: § The Leading Rider Award will be given to the winner of the Varsity Open Championship Class. § Team Championship: Each Team will designate one (1) point rider for each class in the Varsity and Junior Varsity and Future divisions. Different riders may be designated for flat and fences. High point Teams will be placed through eighth place. § Victor-Hugo Vidal Sportsmanship Award (Hunt Seat) will be given to the individual chosen by show officials to exemplify outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship at the IEA National Finals. (see details on next page.) § The Team Spirit Award will be given to the Team chosen by show officials who best exemplifies overall sportsmanship and enthusiasm. § Written Horsemanship Award: See details within class descriptions. § Outstanding Hunt Seat Horses will be chosen by the Judges. There will be one award for o/f and one for flat. § Coach Sportsmanship Award will be given to the individual chosen by show officials to exemplify outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship at the IEA National Finals. § Volunteer of the Show will be given to a showing or non-showing IEA member who is chosen by officials for exemplifying dedication, work and helpfulness during the IEA National Finals

Victor Hugo-Vidal Sportsmanship Award – Hunt Seat: Each team represented may nominate one entered rider for the Sportsmanship Award. This rider will wear an armband and entry number throughout the weekend, and at the conclusion of National Finals, the judging committee will announce the winner of the Sportsmanship Award. One rider for each named team may be nominated.

Schooling: Please note the designated schooling times for horses. Schooling sessions will be supervised by a designated member of the show committee. From Wednesday, April 15thth through Sunday, April 19th, no rider that is showing in the IEA National Finals may ride any horse on the show grounds unless that rider has finished all possible phases of competition. Any rider that violates the schooling policy will be disqualified from all phases of competition at the 2020 Hunt Seat National Finals. All schooling riders must wear identifying armbands that are available in the show office.

Senior Scholarships: The highest placing senior/12th grade rider AND the second highest placing senior/12th grade rider from each of the INDIVIDUAL rider classes will be awarded scholarship money as follows: § Varsity Open Championship ($1100/$550) § Open Flat ($1000/$500) § Open Fences ($1000/$500) § Intermediate Flat ($600/$300) § Intermediate Fences ($600/$300) § Novice Flat ($500/$250) § Novice Fences ($500/$250) § Beginner Flat W/T/C ($500/$250) § Beginner Flat W/T ($500/$250)

Entries: Entries will not be accepted without an IEA number listed for each rider. All entries will be verified for eligibility to compete at National Finals. Entries will be considered received only with full payment. Entries will open immediately upon electronic distribution of prize list. Entries will close, and must be received by the following dates, based upon completion of Zone Finals Competitions.

Thursday, March 12 – Zones 3, 8, and 9 Thursday, March 19 – Zones 2, 4, and 7 Wednesday, March 25 – Zones 5, 10, and 11 Monday, March 30 – Zone 1

Each individual rider will be charged $60 per class. Each team rider will be charged $60 per class. There is no entry fee for Varsity Open Championship. Scratches can be made with full refund before closing date. Checks should be made payable to Interscholastic Equestrian Association. A confirmation email will be sent upon receipt of entries; please include a valid email address in the space provided on the entry form for this purpose.

Entries received after posted closing dates will not be guaranteed acceptance. While a confirmation email will be sent upon receipt of entries as a courtesy, it is each coach’s responsibility to ensure that their entries have been received in a timely fashion.

The IEA recommends that entries be sent via certified mail with a return receipt or through some other guaranteed and traceable delivery service.

Please note: To make it easier for our coaches to complete their entries, this prize list is a fill-able PDF Form. You can enter your team’s information for entries, Program Ads, Reserved Seating, etc. within this document. Simply save the file to your computer, enter your information and save the entire document with your team’s name as the file name. Then print the pages for entries (including any program ads and reserved seating) and mail them, along with a check (payable to Interscholastic Equestrian Association) to the IEA Membership Office.
