The interview was conducted at Edward Dugmore's home in New York by Tram Combs for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview ED: EDWARD DUGMORE MD: EDIE DUGMORE [MRS. There will be three voices on the tape. This is Tram Combs speaking. ED: This is Edward Dugmore. MD: And this is Edie Dugmore. TC: Edie is Mrs. Dugmore. She is sitting in on the interview for information that doesn’t come immediately to mind, and any disagreements about [our accuracy]. [all chuckle] Ed, tell us about your background, your family. ED: Okay, I was born in 1915. I have two brothers, approximately four years apart. Older brother and a younger brother. TC: Their names? ED: There’s Leonard, and then myself, and then Stanley is the youngest. My father came over from England, and my mother, and he was a photographer. TC: With your mother? MD: No. ED: No, he didn’t do that; that’s right. -

Magic Moments Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-1871) was the most famous of all French magicians, for he is considered the world over as the father of modern conjuring. Jean’s père sent his eleven-year-old son up the Loire to the University of Orléans (not to be confused with UNO) to prepare for a career as a lawyer. But his son wanted to become a watchmaker like his dad, and these skills trained him in all things mechanical. The first magician to use electricity, Houdin was sent to Algeria in 1856 by the French government to combat the influence of the dervishes by duplicating their feats - a real whirlwind tour. His books helped explain the art of magic to countless aficionados: his autobiography (1857), Confidences d’un prestidigitateur (1859), and Les Secrets de la prestidigitation et de la magie (1868). One such devotee was arguably the most renowned illusionist and escape artist in history. Born in Hungary in 1874 as Erich Weiss, he adopted the name Harry Houdini as a teenager after having read Houdin’s autobiography. Performing twenty shows a day, the young wizard was soon taking home twelve dollars a week. Before long he was an international success, and he would bring this magic moxie to the Crescent City on more than one occasion. It was pouring rain that day in downtown New Orleans, November 17, 1907, when a crowd of nearly 10,000 people gathered along the wharves near the Canal Street ferry landing to witness Houdini triple- manacled for a death-defying plunge into the Mississippi River. -

They sat across from me, stone-faced and indifferent to my arguments. “Do be quiet, Georgiana.” With gloved fingers my mother massaged her forehead. Our coach slowed and rolled to a complete standstill, waylaid by crowds spilling into the road. All of London celebrated Napoleon’s capture and imprisonment on the isle of Elba. Rich and poor danced in the streets, rejoicing together and singing songs around makeshift fires. Their jubilation made my journey to exile all the more dismal. My father drummed fingers against his thigh and muttered curse words about our snail-like progress through London. Mother closed her eyes as if in slumber, a ploy to evade my petitions. She could not possibly be sleeping while holding her spine in such an erect formation. She didn’t even allow herself the luxury of leaning back against the squibs for fear of crumpling the feathers on her bonnet. Somehow, some way, I had to make them see reason. “This is a pointless expense. Surely you realize I have no more use for a schoolroom. She stood looming at the head of the magazine table set in the center of it, a living demonstration that the room was inadequate and ridiculous. Her little bright black eyes took in all the patients as she sized up the seating situation. There was one vacant chair and a place on the sofa occupied by a blond child in a dirty blue romper who should have been told to move over and make room for the lady. He was five or six, but Mrs. Turpin saw at once that no one was going to tell him to move over. He was slumped down in the seat, his arms idle at his sides and his eyes idle in his head; his nose ran unchecked. Mrs. Turpin put a firm hand on Claud's shoulder and said in a voice that included anyone who wanted to listen, "Claud, you sit in that chair there," and gave him a push down into the vacant one. Claud was florid and bald and sturdy, somewhat shorter than Mrs. Turpin, but he sat down as if he were accustomed to doing what she told him to. Mrs. Turpin remained standing. The only man in the room besides Claud was a lean stringy old fellow with a rusty hand spread out on each knee, whose eyes were closed as if he were asleep or dead or pretending to be so as not to get up and offer her his seat.
