The Three worlds in Hinduism
• Satya Lok- Heaven
• Bhu Lok- Earth
• Patala Lok- Underworld Jaya and Vijaya
• The gatekeepers of Vaikuntha – Jaya and Vijaya • The four kumaras wanted to meet Lord Vishnu
• Jaya and Vijaya mocked at them for being children and said “The Lord is busy”
• The Kumara brothers got angry and said “Lord is always available for his devotees”. • They cursed the two gatekeepers that they will lose their divine abode and get incarnated on earth. • Jaya and Vijaya realized who the Kumaras were and begged Lord Vishnu to remove the curse • Vishnu said the curse given by the kumara brothers was very powerful and cannot be removed • He gave them two choices- take 7 births as Vishnu devotees or 3 births as vishnu enemies
• They chose 3 births so that they can return to Vaikunth and be with Lord Vishnu faster. • Birth 1- Hiranyaksh and Hiranyakashipu, two notorious demons in Satyayug
• Birth 2- Ravan and Kumbhakaran in Treta yug
• Birth 3- Shishupal and Dantavakra in Dwapar Yug 3. Varaha Avtar
• Jaya/Vijaya- Hiranyaksh • Hiranyaksh wanted to become very powerful and the ruler of all the three worlds • He performed severe penance and pleased Lord Brahma • “Oh Lord I should not be defeated by any living being, Gods or animals- he mentioned all animals but not varaha (boar) “
• He started tormenting everyone because he was all powerful • The Gods became worried and prayed to Lord Vishnu
• Vishnu emerged as a boar from the nostril of Lord Brahma
4. Narasimha Avtar
• Jaya/Vijaya- Hiranyakashipu • After the death of Hiranyaksh, Hiranyakashipu led war against the Gods, the Gods won with the help of Lord vishnu • He started severe meditation to ask Brahma for immortality
• The Gods won the war. Indra drove most of the demons away. He destroyed Hiranyakashipu’s kingdom and entered his palace. • He saw Hiranyakahipu’s wife “Kayadu” and took her away as a prisoner. • Narda was angry with Indra for his act. Indra apologized and agreed to return her back to th palace • • Kayadu was pleased but she did not want to live in the kingdom without her husband • She requested Sage Narda to allow her to live in his hermitage (Ashram) where she would serve him as his daughter • Sage Narda told her stories of Vishnu. She developed an attachment to Lord vishnu • Brahma appears in front of Hiranyakashipu • Immortality- not possible • No man /animal • neither day nor night • neither inside nor outside • No weapons • neither earth nor in space Om Namo Narayanaya*
•The mantra is Narayanaya and not Bhagavate Vasudevaya as I mentioned in class. • Bhagavate Vasudevaya appears in later Yug after the birth of Lord Krishna • king called his demoness sister, Holika for help. Holika has a distinctive cloth that when worn prevented her from being harmed by fire. By preparing a bonfire Hiranyakashipu asked Holika to sit with his son Prahlad in her lap in the hope that he will become a victim to fire. Holika Dahan
• Narasimha (being a man-lion god form) kills Hiranyakashipu. He comes out to kill at the twilight (neither day nor night);on the doorsteps of his palace (neither inside nor outside); uses his nails to kill (not a weapon); puts him on his lap before killing (neither earth nor in space). Thus making power of the boon ineffective.
