Theorizing Toronto Ioan Davies The spectres drift across the square in rows. How empire permeates! And we sit down in Nathan Phillips square, among the sun, as if our lives were real. Lacunae. Parking lots. Regenerations. Newsstand euphorics and Revell’s1 sign, that not one countryman has learned, that men and women live that they make that life worth dying. Living. Hey, the dead ones! Gentlemen, generations of acquiescent spectres gawk at the chrome on American cars on Queen St, gawk and slump and retreat. And over the square where I sit, congregating above the Archer they crowd in a dense baffled throng and the sun does not shine through (Lee 1972: 36) Thus wrote the Toronto poet Dennis Lee in the early 1970s, contemplating the new Toronto City Hall and the installation of Henry Moore’s statue The Archer, which had caused a major civic upheaval when it was unveiled.2 It marked the moment when the city began to think seriously about its space, as the introduction of new forms of architecture took over from the old: the futuristic City Hall itself (commanding a space beside the red sandstone of the old gothic City Hall), Mies van der Rohe’s Toronto-Dominion Bank on Wellington street (a mass black-and-glass block replacing older, inter-war stone and brick offices), and the freeing of the old harbour and the railway lands beside Lake Ontario for commercial and public development. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the debates over the physical form of the future city centred on which older parts should be preserved, and for what use; where and for whom the new developments should take place; and what would be the pattern of transportation (expressways? public transport?). -

ABSTRACT In this thesis, 1 demonstrate how Paul Thompson's collective creations from the 1970s and early 1980s provided a mechanism by which to attach theatre practice to the creation of dramatic text. 1 demonstrate how Paul Thompson developed his collective creations to help replenish the body of Canadian written work in the country's theatre industry, creating a volume of playable Canadian theatre texts that were developed by Canadians, for Canadians, and based on Canadian subject-rnatter. -

Ms Coll 00050 Davies (Robertson) Papers Robertson Davies Papers (gift of June Davis) Dates: 1929-2008 Extent: 115 boxes (22 metres) Biographical Description: Robertson Davies was born in Thamesville, Ontario in 1913 and was the third son of W. Rupert Davies and Florence Sheppard McKay. Davies’ father, Rupert Davies was born in Wales and was the publisher of The Kingston Whig Standard and was appointed to the Senate as a Liberal in 1942, a position he would hold until his death in 1967. As a young child, Robertson Davies moved with his family to Renfrew, Ontario, where his father managed the local newspaper, the Renfrew Mercury. The family would later relocate to Kingston in 1925. Between 1928 and 1932, Davies attended Upper Canada College in Toronto, where he performed in theatrical performances and wrote and edited the school paper, The College Times. After graduating, Davies attended Queen’s University in Kingston, where he was enrolled as a special student as he was not working towards a specific degree. Between 1932 and 1935, Davies wrote for the school paper and performed and directed theatrical plays. In 1935, Davies traveled to England to study at Baillol College at Oxford, where he was enrolled in a Bachelor of Letters degree. At Oxford, Davies performed with the Oxford University Dramatic Society and was a co- founder of the Long Christmas Dinner Society. After graduating in 1938, Davies published his thesis, Shakespeare’s Boy Actors through the publisher J.M Dent & Sons in 1939. In 1938, Davies joined the Old Vic theatre company, where he had roles in The Taming of the Shrew, She Stoops to Conquer, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and also worked as a teacher of dramatic history at their drama school. -

Radical social movements and countercultures challenged the conservatism of the preceding decade, rejected traditional forms of politics, and demanded an alternative based on the principles of social justice, individual freedom and an end to oppression on all fronts. Yet in Canada a unique political movement emerged which embraced these principles but proposed that New Left social movements – the student and anti-war movements, the women’s liberation movement and Canadian nationalists – could bring about radical political change not only through street protests and sit-ins, but also through participation in electoral politics. -

ARTICLES Lawless Lawyers: Indigeneity, Civility, and Violence HEATHER DAVIS-FISCH On 8 June 1826, young members of the Family Compact—allegedly disguised as “Indians”—raided William Lyon Mackenzie’s York office, smashing his printing press and throwing his types into Lake Ontario, to protest defamatory editorials. This essay investigates how the cultural memory of “Indian” disguise emerged by asking what this memory reveals about the performative and political dynamics of this protest. At first glance, the performance conventions and disciplinary function of the Types Riot allow it to be compared to folk protest traditions such as “playing Indian” and charivari. However, the Types Riot differed from these popular performances because the participants were members of the provincial elite, not protestors outside of the structures of power. The rioters’ choice of how to perform their “civilized” authority—through an act of lawless law legitimated through citations of “Indigenous” authority—demonstrates inherent contradictions in how power was enacted in Upper Canada. Furthermore, by engaging in a performance that resembled charivari, the rioters called their own civility—attained through education, wealth, and political connections—into question by behaving like peasants. The Types Riot demonstrates that the Family Compact’s claim to authority based on its members’ civility—their superior values, education, and social privilege—was backed by the threat of uncivil violence. The riot revealed a contradiction that the Upper Canadian elite would, no doubt, have preferred remained private: that in the settler-colony, gentlemanly power relied upon the potential for “savage” retribution, cited through the rioters’ “Indian” disguises.
