Māori have been fighting British colonisation for 179 years. We have always told our British visitors we never ceded our sovereignty and that the structures they set up to dispossess us and usurp our power are illegitimate. We have never stopped exer- cising our form of sovereignty. My talk will cover the training my generation received from our elders and jobs they gave us to help restore justice and the balance that should exist between Māori and our British visitors. I will talk about New Zealand’s treaty claims settlement process that is just one of the current examples of on-going British colonial oppression. I will also talk about two strategies we have adopted to try to stop this behaviour. Presenter: Margaret Mutu is of Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Whātua and Scottish descent. She ST. The Musqueam people have lived in our present location for thousands of years. Our traditional territory once occupied much of what Is now Vancouver and surrounding areas. The name Musqueam relates back to the flowering plant, maSk^ay, which grows in the Fraser River estuary. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the x*ma6k*'ayam (Musqueam)- People of the ma6k"'ay plant. Although a metropolitan city has developed in the heart of Musqueam territory, our community maintains strong culturai and traditionai beliefs. Today our population flourishes and we are a strong community of over 1,300 members. To learn more about Musqueam, please visit www.musqueam.bc.ca.
