The surveys of 1995, as recommended in the 1994 Action Plan (Pearce-Kelly et ah, 1994), were therefore primarily seen as a rescue mission, with snails being collected for an expanded captive-breeding programme in Europe and, particu- larly, in the USA, where most of the collection went. Four economic species of Bactrocera flies have sequentially invaded French Polynesia: B. kirki (Froggatt) in 1928, B. tryoni (Froggatt) in 1970, B. dorsalis (Hendel), detected on Tahiti in 1996, and B. xanthodes (Broun), detected on the Austral Islands in 1998. Following a failed attempt to eradicate B. dorsalis, documented in this paper, it became established and the dominant fruit fly, displac- ing B. kirki and B. tryoni. Two braconid parasitoids were introduced from Hawaii and established: Fopius arisanus (Sonan) (released in 2002) and Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) (released in 2007). By 2009 mean parasitism for fruit flies infesting common guava (Psidium guajava), Tahitian chestnut (Inocarpus fagifer), and tropical almond (Terminalia catappa) fruits on Tahiti was 70%, and 95% of the emerged parasitoids were F. arisanus. Numbers of B. dorsalis trapped from methyl eugenol and bred from guava, Tahitian chestnut and tropical almond have been reduced by 87%, 89%, 88%, and 91–94%, respectively, from the 2002–03 peaks.

Abstract Islands, often celebrated as natural laboratories for evolution and ecology, also provide unique experimental grounds for societal studies. Although biological invasions are widely recognised as one of the main causes of biodiversity erosion and a driver of global change, the human perception of invasive species may vary at regional and local levels, especially in societies with different levels of socio-economic development and cultures. This study was conducted in French Polynesia (South Pacific), a territory formed by 120 tropical and subtropical oceanic islands (76 being inhabited) divided into five archipelagos (Austral, Marquesas, Society, Tuamotu, and Gambier Is), comprising both highly populated and urbanised islands (such as Tahiti in the Society Is) and less populated and very small islands, sometimes very isolated (without airstrips) and where traditional life style and strong dependence on natural resources still persist. During an eight-month education and prevention campaign targeting alien plant and animal species legally declared invasive in French Polynesia, public meetings were organised on 19 small islands for a total of 2,045 consulted people in 41 different villages.
