Anwar Hossain3 Abstract Background: The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important polyphagous pest of horticultural produce. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a proven control method against many insect pests, including fruit flies, under area-wide pest management programs. High quality mass-rearing process and the cost-effective production of sterile target species are important for SIT. Irradiation is reported to cause severe damage to the symbiotic community structure in the mid gut of fruit fly species, impairing SIT success. However, studies have found that target-specific manipulation of insect gut bacteria can positively impact the overall fitness of SIT-specific insects. Results: Twelve bacterial genera were isolated and identified from B. dorsalis eggs, third instars larval gut and adults gut. The bacterial genera were Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Citrobacter, Pseudomonas, Proteus, and Stenotrophomonas, belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Larval diet enrichment with the selected bacterial isolate, Proteus sp. was found to improve adult emergence, percentage of male, and survival under stress. However, no significant changes were recorded in B. dorsalis egg hatching, pupal yield, pupal weight, duration of the larval stage, or flight ability. Conclusions: These findings support the hypothesis that gut bacterial isolates can be used in conjunction with SIT. -

LEEPER PO Box 13086 Las Cruces, NM USA, 88013 [email protected] [1] Abstract. Blackburn & Sharp (1885: 146 & 147) described the first coccinellids found in Hawaii. The first documented introduction and successful establishment was of Rodolia cardinalis from Australia in 1890 (Swezey, 1923b: 300). This paper documents 167 coccinellid species as having been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands with forty-six (46) species considered established based on unpublished Hawaii State Department of Agriculture records and literature published in Hawaii. The paper also provides nomenclatural and taxonomic changes that have occurred in the Hawaiian records through time. INTRODUCTION The Coccinellidae comprise a large family in the Coleoptera with about 490 genera and 4200 species (Sasaji, 1971). The majority of coccinellid species introduced into Hawaii are predacious on insects and/or mites. Exceptions to this are two mycophagous coccinellids, Calvia decimguttata (Linnaeus) and Psyllobora vigintimaculata (Say). Of these, only P. vigintimaculata (Say) appears to be established, see discussion associated with that species’ listing. The members of the phytophagous subfamily Epilachninae are pests themselves and, to date, are not known to be established in Hawaii. None of the Coccinellidae in Hawaii are thought to be either endemic or indigenous. All have been either accidentally or purposely introduced. Three species, Scymnus discendens (= Diomus debilis LeConte), Scymnus ocellatus (=Scymnobius galapagoensis (Waterhouse)) and Scymnus vividus (= Scymnus (Pullus) loewii Mulsant) were described by Sharp (Blackburn & Sharp, 1885: 146 & 147) from specimens collected in the islands. There are, however, no records of introduction for these species prior to Sharp’s descriptions. -

After offering an overview of recent evidence concerning the phenomenon, I consider several prominent accounts of the placebo effect that have been put forward and argue that none of them are able to adequately account for the diverse instantiations of the phenomenon. I then offer a novel account, which suggests that we ought to think of the placebo effect as encompassing three distinct responses: conditioned placebo responses, cognitive placebo responses, and network placebo responses. -

While many studies have characterized effects of Bt maize on various carabid species, few have examined the potential acquisition of Cry toxins from live plants versus plant residue. In this study, we examined how live Bt maize and Bt maize residue affect acquisition of Cry1Ab in six species. Adult beetles were collected live from fields with either currentyear Bt maize, oneyearold Bt maize residue, twoyearold Bt maize residue, or fields without any Bt crops or residue for the past two years, and specimens were analyzed using ELISA. Observed Cry1Ab concentrations in the beetles were similar to that reported in previously published studies. Only one specimen of Cyclotrachelus iowensis acquired Cry1Ab from twoyearold maize residue. Three species acquired Cry1Ab from fields with either live plants or plant residue (Cyclotrachelus iowensis, Poecilus lucublandus, Poecilus chalcites), implying participation in both liveplant and residuebased food webs. Two species acquired toxin from fields with live plants, but not from fields with residue (Bembidion quadrimaculatum, Elaphropus incurvus), suggesting participation only in live plantbased food webs. -

Abstract In the present study, micromorphology and comparative anatomy of young root, stem and leaf of three economically important taxa of Brassica L. viz., B. rapa L. subsp. campestris (L.) Clapham, B. juncea (L.) Czern. and B. napus L. are investigated in detail for the first time in Bangladesh by using light microscopy (LM). In anatomical studies, cross sections of young root, stem and leaf have been examined and biometric measurement of cell and tissues are presented. The micromorphological studies are related to the epidermal surface. In addition, the stomatal index and stomatal index ratio of these taxa have been calculated and presence of simple, non-glandular, unicellular trichome on stems and leaves also been observed except on the stem of B. rapa L. subsp. campestris (L.) Clapham. The anatomical study reveals that the investigated taxa have primary growth in roots and stems as well as amphistomatic and bifacial leaves with anisocytic stomata have been noticed. Finally, presence of tetrarch or single strand exarch xylem in vascular bundle of root, the size, shape and presence or absence of trichome over stem, shape of midrib of leaf have been considered to provide reliable features for identification of the Brassica species. Introduction The family Brassicaceae consists of 338 genera and 3709 species and dispersed all through the world, basically in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere (Warwick et al., 2006; Kasem et al., 2011). -

Having spent many happy hours with the lamented author in the examination of the beautiful forms of which this book treats, I have felt it a pleasant thing to be associated, even in so humble a capacity, with its introduction to the Entomological world ; and the little service I have had the privilege of rendering in the revision of the proof-sheets of the latter half of the work, has been quite a labour of love enabling me to offer a slight testimony of affection to a kind friend, and of my personal interest in that family of the Coleoptera which had first attracted my attention by the singular loveliness of its numerous species. A careful revision by the author himself would have been of incalculable value to the work ; its usefulness would also have been greatly enhanced, had it been possible for him to have made those modifications and additions which his investigations in America afforded materials for. But, of course, this was not possible. Afsana Entomology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh 1Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh Abstract: Life cycle of Micraspis discolor (Fabricious), a predator of brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) was studied in the laboratory and its potentiality in biological control was investigated. A female M. discolor laid an average of 117.7 eggs in 25.1 days of oviposition period. Preoviposition period ranged from 5-10 days with an average of 6.6 days. The eggs hatched in 2-3 days with 83.7% hatching success. Predator had 4 larval instars requiring a total period of 12-15 days. Mean developmental period of the predator was 20.2 days. Male and female beetles lived for 27.4 and 32.4 days respectively. A predator larva consumed an average of 47.6 third instar brown plant hopper, while an adult beetle consumed an average of 112.6 BPH during 30 days after emergence. Predator, M. discolor both in larval and adult stage showed preference for second and third instar brown plant hopper. Sc Ag (Hons 1); Master of Horticulture Thesis submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Forest and Ecosystem Science The University of Melbourne May 2008 Abstract Eucalypts are a major forest resource globally and the area of eucalypt plantations for pulp and paper production is expanding rapidly in Australia. Consequently, there is an increasing need to breed eucalypts with improved wood properties. Since many high value wood traits are under strong genetic control, identification of DNA markers linked to these traits will have application in breeding programs. In recent years there has been a shift in marker strategy away from QTL mapping in pedigrees to association studies in unrelated populations. In the latter approach, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes are screened to identify SNPs that significantly associate with wood traits. Significant SNPs could be used for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding programs. The objectives of this study were to identify candidate genes that may influence pulp yield in eucalypts and to identify SNP variants in those genes that associate with superior wood and pulp traits. Approximately 300 trees from a full-sib Eucalyptus nitens progeny derived from a wide intra specific cross were used for gene discovery. DNA microarrays containing ~5800 young xylem of cDNAs Eucalyptus grandis were screened with probes synthesised from RNA isolated from trees with either high or low pulp yield. Forty-six transcripts were differentially regulated, of which 27 were more abundant in high pulp trees and 19 were more abundant in low pulp trees. -
