Ramadev New MBBS Curriculum 12 Publisher The Registrar, Karnataka Medical Council, 16/6, Miller Tank Bund Road, Vasanth Nagar, Bemgluru 560 052 E mail: [email protected] website: www.Karnatakamedicalcouncil.com EDITORIAL Artificial intelligence in health care Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is a branch of computer science, exhibiting intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. AI is the simulation of human intelligence by the machine. AI has made the computers to think intelligently in a similar manner as the intelligent humans think. AI is accomplished by making a study how human brain thinks, and how humans undertake learning, make decisions and undertake work while solving a problem. AI encompasses different disciplines such as computer science, biology, psychology, mathematics, engineering and linguistics. AI carries out computer functions associated with human intelligence. In our daily life we encounter a huge volume of knowledge which is not well organized and it is not stationary. AI helps in organizing the information. It makes it possible to alter by correcting the errors. The knowledge can be used efficiently, and speedily. A computer will analyze a large set of data and come to a conclusion through an algorithm. AI has made its entry into the healthcare industry. AI has been utilized in determining the accurate dose of immunosuppressant agents (1), and anti-cancer drugs (2). A large number of medicines are available to treat cancer and the treating physician finds it difficult to make selection of the right drugs for the patients. A machine has been developed that is able to memorize the literature pertaining to cancer and help in predicting the combination of drugs that will be most effective for each patient. Machines such as Hanover, and Watson have shown that they can beat human intelligence in many situations. In the coming years AI will support doctors in providing care to the patients. It can help in solving many smaller real-world problems such as reducing prescription errors or ensuring patients to take their medication as prescribed (3). Thus AI has become a useful tool to support the work of doctors to provide best quality care to the patients. Royal College of Physicians, London has brought out a position statement on AI in health. It has urged to apply AI in real world challenges such as prescription errors, medication adherence, and use of, and resistance to, antibiotics (4). Utility of AI has to be properly tested, and evaluated. Doctors have the responsibility to appraise the efficacy and utility of the new technology. Since real- time data is so diverse, it has to reflect properly in the intended population, We anticipate that the new technology will help the doctor to take a person-centered approach to make best possible decisions in health care. Often a question is raised whether AI will replace the doctors. Though it is unlikely to happen in near future, we have to give careful consideration about its safety and ethical considerations. P.S.
