DATE COMPLETED: 2020 ESTIMATED Initiated by the Chicago Housing Policy Task Force, the 2019 Disruptive Design Competition challenged designers to create “the next Chicago bungalow”— meaning a $250,000 starter home that could put a dent in Chicago’s affordable housing shortage. The prompt drew 133 entries. The winner, “Adaptable House,” features flexible layouts that work ingeniously as a single-family dwelling or a two-flat to generate rental income for the owner. ARCHITECTURE.ORG • 22 WE HAVE A WINNER! BY JESSICA CILELLA

In May, the CAC hosted the 37th annual Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition for Chicago area high school students. Nearly 800 students worked on projects in seven categories. One of those categories was graphic design. The challenge was to design a bus shelter advertisement for Open House Chicago 2019 that would encourage people to visit and explore the festival. Students started working on competition projects in February and their work was juried by a panel of 35 architecture and design professionals at the CAC in May.

Ulises Medina, a senior at Rolling Meadows High School, was selected as the overall grand prize winner in the graphic design division. We asked him a few questions about the experience.

What was your inspiration? Explain how you came up with the design. I did research on bus shelter advertisements, how they looked and how they represented their product or event. I also looked at previous designs that had been made for the competition. With the amount of sites Open House Chicago has to offer, I decided the best route to represent the event was by not just including one site, but by including multiple sites that were very diverse, to help represent how Would you recommend taking part in Newhouse unique and different architecture in Chicago is. to other students? Why? Of course. Not only does it give students a chance to design What did you think when you won? and compete, but it also gives students an opportunity to How did you feel? explore the rich architecture in Chicago. If graphic design I was thrilled and satisfied that I won because I truly believed is an interest for a student and they get rewarded for doing this was one of my best designs since discovering graphic something they like to do, there is no pain in trying. Plus, it design just a year ago. I savored every moment because I had gives many people an opportunity to build their portfolio, put so much time and effort into this project and got rewarded and to invest in their creativity by attempting to stand out for it. I got rewarded for doing something I love. when everyone is given the same task.

CALLING ALL NEWHOUSE COMPETITION ALUMNI! What opportunities did Newhouse create for you? As we approach the 40th anniversary of the competition, we would love to hear more about you, your Newhouse experience and the career path you took after competing! Please contact us at [email protected].
