In September, CAC members will have front row seats to two exciting AT THE CENTER international events coming to town: EXPO CHICAGO at Navy Pier and the third Chicago Architecture Biennial at the Chicago Cultural Center. EDUCATION In October, more than 100,000 urban adventurers are expected to come out 12 Intern experiences in droves to our biggest event of the year: Open House Chicago (OHC). This free, two-day architecture festival has become the second largest Open TOURS House event in the world (after London) with nearly 300 sites in more than 30 neighborhoods. YOUR OFFICIAL GUIDE TO BY ERIC ROGERS AND JESSICA CILELLA Open House Chicago (OHC) is your one opportunity each year to get a behind-the-scenes look at nearly 300 incredible sites of architectural, historical, and cultural significance in more than 30 neighborhoods. Don’t forget, as a CAC member, you can use your Priority Access Pass to jump to the front of the line at the busiest and most popular sites! Here are a few highlights for this year’s festival, taking place Oct. 19–20. Check openhousechicago.org during the second week of September to view the full list of sites. OHC will start at 10am both days, but hours vary by site, so be sure to check individual listings online or in our printed Event Guide—available in the Chicago Tribune on Oct. 17. NEW SITE HIGHLIGHTS DOWNTOWN Many OHC fan favorites like The Chicago Board of Trade Building, 300 East Randolph and the Columbia Yacht Club return year after year for visitors to enjoy. But we are always excited to feature new downtown sites for you to explore, including: Prudential Plaza, previously a members-only site, includes access to a striking new amenity floor and landscaped rooftop plaza, with sweeping views of Millennium Park Chicago Post Office, another former members-only site, invites all this year to take in the magnificently restored Art Deco lobby of this refurbished giant Sky-Line Club, above, and Essex on the Park, right Sky-Line Club, a private club and rebuilt English pub on top of the Old Republic Building, is returning after two years off Essex on the Park, a brand new residential building with a four- story winter garden and infinity pool overlooking Grant Park ARCHITECTURE.ORG • 4 MEMBERS ONLY As a CAC member, you get exclusive access to a handful of Open House Chicago sites that are not open to anyone else, including: Soho House Chicago, a private club with panoramic rooftop views of the city Perkins and Will, a stunning architectural office at the top of the Wrigley Building’s north tower Carl Street Studios, pictured, eclectic Old Town artist residences and gardens re- imagined by artist Edgar Miller in the 1920s AND MORE! IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS We encourage everyone—but especially longtime OHC participants—to get out and explore Chicago’s rich and diverse neighborhoods. As OHC expands to cover more of the city each year, we keep finding new places for you to visit, such as: St. Ignatius College Prep on the Near West Side, a storied Catholic school that predates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 Columbus Park Refectory in Austin, a stunning event space tucked away amid one of Chicago’s most important Prairie School landscapes University of Chicago Keller Center in Woodlawn, an imaginatively-adapted Modernist building that houses the Harris School of Public Policy Columbus Park Refectory St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church in Andersonville, a sacred space with a magnificently colorful interior, tucked away on a quiet residential street 5 • FALL 2019 SPECIAL CATEGORIES When you visit openhousechicago.org, you’ll be able to use more than 20 filters to decide which sites you want to visit. See theaters of all shapes and sizes—from versatile black-boxes to iconic venues like Broadway In Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre (featured on the cover of this issue). BREWED IN CHICAGO Grab a drink and tour some of the city’s hottest breweries and distilleries, including Moody Tongue Brewing Company’s new digs in South Loop, Eris Brewery & Cider House in Irving Park and Whiner Beer Company in Back of the Yards.
