2020 Christmas at Retail Worldwide

Argentina

The Shop! Argentina Team visited two iconic shopping centers home to major brands and three large supermarkets, These centers are considered the most important shopping districts in the area. As expected, with the exception for one or two cases, the stores lacked creativity and motivation seen in previous years. This could be due to the shopping centers having only been opened a few weeks after being closed for nine months. The health and safety protocols for stores on main streets continue to be very strict.

The windows and visual merchandising (VM) this Christmas is celebratory, bright, contemporary and we are seeing more ‘southern hemisphere’ inspiration – less snow, more kookaburras and surf boards! Christmas VM is a little crazy in a way this year. Designers and marketers have essentially tried to create VM that celebrates all of the missed occasions from the year . The POP displays are quite outstanding this year. The confectionery brands have put a lot of thought and effort into their spectacular POP displays.

Netherlands

There was a rise of stand-alone temporary POP-UP stores in the Netherlands this year, besides the traditional retail outlets−Supermarkets, Home and Garden Centers. Also, there were in-store Christmas branded decoration, signage, top cards and displays from the retailer, instead of materials of the brands. Secondary placement of product via POP displays was also visible. Luxury retail continued business as usual with no real cost savings in-store.

There were not many interesting window displays this year in Moscow. This was most likely due to budget constraints. Almost all windows shown here are from GUM, the

shopping center on the Red Square. It is

always festive with lot of tourists. But, in many other areas even with fashion stores do not have interesting decorations aside from the usual Christmas trees. This could also be due to timing since they celebrate Christmas on January 7th in Russia and not December 25th.

This year, the Christmas decorations in Barcelona were austere and some were the same as the last year. The following photos were from luxury shops on Barcelona's Passeig de Gracia and photos of a commercial district of the city Sarriá. Due to the covid situation, and the lack of tourism, the shops on Passeig de Gracia, have reduced their Christmas decorations.
