Royals Notes - Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals - Saturday, May 17, 2014 This & That MISCUES FROM THE MOUND--Jeremy Guthrie was guilty of a throwing error last night, the 11th miscue by Kansas City pitching, the most in the majors this season and already two more than the staff was charged with all of last year. GORDO GUNS ANOTHER ONE--Three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winning leftfielder Alex Gordon picked up his fourth outfield assist of the year here on Thursday night, nabbing J.J. Hardy at the plate in the seventh inning...the assist ties him with Melky Cabrera and Michael Brantley for the A.L. lead, a view from the top that Gordo is used to...since the 2011 season when he became a full-time leftfielder, Gordon has amassed a Major League best 58 outfield assists, 19 more than the nearest active outfielder, Arizona’s Gerardo Parra (39)...Alex actually made the transition late in the 2010 season, picking up just one assist that year, but with 59 as a career outfielder, he has 11 more than his nearest competition, the O’s Adam Jones and Parra. DESPITE LOSS, STAFF NUMBERS SOLID--In posting a 6-4 record in the last 10 games, Kansas City has a solid 2.10 ERA, allowing 21 earned runs in 90.0 innings...the bullpen has been phenomenal of late after posting the league’s best ERA in 2013 it has settled in to allow no earned runs in the last 10 games, totaling 22.2 innings while fanning 24 and holding the opposition to a .173 average (13-for-75)...the starters have compiled a 2.82 mark in the last nine contests, allowing 21 earned runs in 67.0 frames...the Chris Davis home run off of Jeremy Guthrie in the eighth last night prevented a ‘quality start’ for KC, as the club ranks third in the A.L. in that department with 25. FEW REVIEWS--Neither club requested a replay review last night, the 24th time in the last 26 games that Kansas City has not issued a challenge...Ned Yost ran Kansas City’s replay review record to 4-2 with a successful challenge in the seventh inning a week ago tonight in Seattle...the play involved Robinson Cano being called safe at second base on a possible wild pitch from Tim Collins, but upon further review it was determined that second baseman Johnny Giavotella legally blocked the bag while taking the throw from Sal Perez and 2:21 later the call was overturned...opposing managers are 4-4 in challenges...to review, each manager gets a challenge and for the first six innings and if he challenges correctly, he’ll receive another...calls are defined as either a) Confirmed; b) Stands or C) Overturned. HOLLY TO THE RESCUE--Greg Holland pitched out of a mini-jam in the ninth on Wednesday vs. Colorado and recorded a game-ending strikeout with the potential tying run on third base to record his 10th save in 11 chances this year...opportunities have been few and far between with Thursday just his fifth chance in the last 25 games, but despite the lack of opportunities his 10 saves are the second most in the league...he has made good on 50 of his last 52 tries (96%), which is tops among the 10 closers who have at least 35 saves in that span...since May 30, 2013, Holland has 6 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 44) and has allowed just 8 earned runs in 66.0 innings for a 1.09 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .168 average...he’s also recorded 99 strikeouts in those 66.0 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.50 strikeouts per 9.0 IP. CROW SETS CLUB MARK--Aaron Crow worked his 19th consecutive game without allowing an earned run here on Thursday night, eclipsing the club record of 18 set by Louis Coleman last year...Crow now has 17.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earnie, two innings better than his previous best to open the 2011 season...he’s also experienced streaks of 13 in a row in his rookie and All-Star year of 2011 and a 9-gamer last year. BETTER SUCCESS VS. N.L.--Kansas City has jumped out to a better start than recent years in action vs. the National League, going 4-1 to this point...the next Interleague action will be when KC plays a 4-game home & home set with St. Louis on June 2-5 with the first two games slated for Busch Stadium and then the last two here...the Royals are looking to turn their fortunes against the Senior Circuit around in 2014, going 9-11 vs. the N.L. last year, their fifth consecutive sub-.500 year...the last winning season against was 2007 when KC dominated with a 13-5 mark...Kansas City’s all-time Interleague mark is 141-167, including a 71-81 ledger here in Kauffman Stadium...this year’s Interleague work is concentrated against the N.L. West including last week’s stop in San Diego and the visit from Colorado...still to come are stops in Arizona (3) and Colorado (2), while the Dodgers (3) and Giants (3) remain ticketed for “The K.” NED IN HIS FOURTH FULL SEASON--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost recorded his 300th win as the KC skipper on May 7 in San Diego, and is now 304-356 since he was named to his position on May 13, 2010...he recently passed John Wathan (287) and Hal McRae (286) to move into fourth on KC’s all-time wins list...he is 13 wins shy of catching Tony Muser, who is third with 317 victories...Yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee (2003-08), is 761-852 all-time as a Major League skipper. FOX SPORTS IS HOME OF THE ROYALS--Kansas City is in its seventh season on Fox Sports Kansas City, featuring a record 150 telecasts in High Definition, up from the 140 a season ago...Ryan Lefebvre anchors the booth for 95 telecasts and Steve Physioc calls the play-by-play for 55 games...Rex Hudler will work all 150 games as the analyst...the pre and post-game shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who will be joined at every home game and several road affairs by Royals’ Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery...the Royals also have two telecasts in the national Saturday window on the FOX Network and three more telecasts on the new FS1...KC also has at least one ESPN national game on June 2 from St. Louis.
