Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed. -

The damage was characterized by a hole in the trunk, from where the shot-hole-borer enters constructing tunnels and feeding on the wood. This is the fi rst record of A. terebrans attacking neem trees in Brazil. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. A key to the genera of Hoplapoderini and field observations on the host plant and reproductive behaviour of the new species are provided. Key words: Attelabidae, Apoderinae, Hoplapoderini, Madagascar, new genus, new species, Grewia Introduction In May 2002, among specimens of Attelabidae collected in Madagascar by David Hauck some months earlier, I received two males belonging to the apoderine tribe Hoplapoderini that could not be assigned to any known genus. A study of the rich collection of Madagascan attelabids at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, a few months later confirmed this diagnosis. During a month-long collecting expedition in Madagascar in December 2003 and January 2004, I collected the new taxon again, at a different locality, and could carry out some observations on its behaviour. Systematics Tribe Hoplapoderini Voss, 1926 Voss (1926) defined his tribe Hoplapoderini largely on the basis of features of the head and elytra. The new Madagascan genus fits into this tribe due to its tapered head, with maximum width near the basis, and its tuberculate elytra. Voss also provided a key to the Accepted by Q. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae) was scientifically reported for the first time in Malaysia. This snout weevil causes severe damage on young stems and flower panicles. Even though the tree survived from a few infestations, but severe cases could pose a serious economic implication on the productivity of the crop. Thus more research regarding the pest management of M. indica is required to maximize mango production in Malaysia. Walaupun pokok tersebut terselamat daripada beberapa serangan tetapi kes-kes yang teruk boleh menimbulkan implikasi ekonomi yang serius terhadap produktiviti tanaman. Oleh itu lebih banyak kajian mengenai pengurusan perosak M. indica diperlukan untuk memaksimumkan pengeluaran mangga di Malaysia.
