REGIONAL DIRECTORS Jon Jaques Medal of Honor National Senior Vice Commander SubmarinerS Shipmates: As we get into the 2020 year, I want to share a couple of thoughts with you: USSVI, like all civic and fraternal organizations, is experiencing a decline in membership, declining interest from younger individuals, and our increasing Western Region Director Central Region Director Northeast Region Director Southeast Region Director average age will be more problematic in the future. He taught me discipline, If you text or call, please leave a voicemail. respect for myself and others, plus honesty and integrity. Submarine school was the last place I ever thought I would be. I had a crow and the responsibility that goes with it. Our instructor, “EMCM(SS),” tasked me with new challenges. He expected me to accomplish those items with minimal involvement from him. He knew my capabilities and my ability to get it done. He was both fair and demanding, a good leader. I made chief as an A-ganger and LPO of a 13 man division aboard a 28-year-old submarine. It was a challenge that reinforced the principles that I had learned from the men I had served with. Aboard the George C. Marshall, Commanding Officer M.P. Gray was a leader who taught me what it meant to look out for your men and their interests. I later served as an engineering LCPO on a steaming surface ship with 208 Sailors. There, I learned that you might win the war, but there is always a price to pay. During my time in ministry, I experienced these issues and more. We fight for our people on a different level and see differing results. Recently, a shipmate from the Marshall lost his life battle and is no longer with us. I had not seen him for many years but had talked to him on social media several times. Never once did he reveal the inner pain he had been feeling, nor did he complain. I will soon be presenting at an Eagle Scout court of honor. I have done this more than 850 times in the last 10 years, and these young men continue to amaze me. Recently as I was walking to my car, I heard, “HEY CHIEF.” A young man hustled up to me with his wife and baby. He grinned and asked me if I remembered him. Honestly answering him, I replied, “not a clue.” He told me I had presented at his court of honor about eight years ago, and afterward, we had talked about military training and education opportunities. He decided to enlist in the Navy for six years, be- came a Gas Turbine Tech, had gotten out, married his high school girlfriend, and started a family.
