At these farbrengens, l’chaim should be made (over wine), and words of Torah pertaining to ahavas Yisroel and the geulah should be shared.2 • After Minchah, we read the sixth chapter of Pirkei Avos. • When davening Maariv, we don’t say Viyhi Noam and Ve’atah Kadosh.3 • The sefirah of motzoei Shabbos is forty-seven days to the omer. 1 SUNDAY, 3 SIVAN, 5777 THINGS TO DO • Today marks the beginning of the three days of hagbalah. • From today until 12 Sivan we don’t say Tachanun. • The Rebbe Rashab was displeased when people took haircuts during the days of hagbalah (before erev Shavuos).4 בני מררי Today’s shiur Chumash for Chitas ends at the words • 5 (4:28). • The sefirah of Sunday night is forty-eight days to the omer. PREPARATIONS FOR SHAVUOS • The most important preparation for receiving the Torah on Shavuos is Torah study, especially the parts of Torah that relate to Shavuos: the halachos of Yom Tov, and explanations of the greatness of Matan Torah, in Nigleh and Chassidus.6 • Another significant preparation is to increase in Jewish unity, similar to the unity experienced when the Jews arrived at Har Sinai to receive the Torah.7 • Help provide financial assistance toward Yom Tov necessities for those in need.8 • Make arrangements for all your children to attend shul to hear the Aseres Hadibros on the first day of Shavuos, and encourage others to do the same.9 MONDAY, 4 SIVAN, 5777 • The sefirah of Monday night is forty-nine days to the omer. 2 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp TUESDAY, 5 SIVAN, 5777 Erev Shavuos THINGS TO DO • Today is the day when the Jewish nation announced “Naaseh venishma,” prefacing naaseh to nishma. Over the course of the day, reflect on this event and how it applies to us, that when it comes to serving Hashem, we must first act and only then try to understand.10 • The Rebbe would often make a siyum on Maseches Sotah during the farbrengen of erev Shavuos. • It is a mitzvah to take a haircut in honor of Yom Tov.11 • Give extra tzedakah today for the two days of Shavuos.12 • Before Yom Tov light a long-burning candle, from which the Yom Tov candles can be lit tomorrow night. • Ideally, women and girls should light candles before shekiah.13 The berachos of Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehechiyanu are said. TUESDAY NIGHT, 6 SIVAN, 5777 First night of Shavuos THINGS TO DO • We are careful to begin Maariv tonight after tzeis hakochavim, “Shavuos is a suitable so the forty-nine days of sefiras time to accomplish 14 ha’omer will be complete. everything for the • We say the Shemoneh Esrei for benefit of Torah study and avodah with yiras Shalosh Regalim, inserting the shamayim, as well as to additions for Shavuos where do teshuvah >>> indicated. 3 Text "LUACH" to 570-543-2125 to receive via WhatsApp • We say the Kiddush for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the addition for concerning Torah study, Shavuos where indicated, followed without hindrance on part of the Satan. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the second Sefer Torah, after which the haftorah is read (Yechezkel 1:1–28, 3:12). • If reading the haftorah along with the oleh, some are accustomed to stand, out of respect for the haftorah’s content (which describes the merkavah).26 Musaf • We say the Musaf for Shalosh Regalim, inserting the additions for Shavuos where appropriate. • Selected Shavuot Halachot First Night
SELECTED SHAVUOT HALACHOT FIRST NIGHT (SUNDAY MAY 16) 1. On Sunday evening, first night Shavuot, many have the minhag to only daven Maariv at night fall. This is based on a well-established custom, cited in the Magen Avraham, not to bring in the Yom Tov of Shavuot early so as to complete the final, 49th, day of the Omer. This inevitably leads to a very late start to the Seuda, and must be weighed against the diminution in Simchat Yom Tov if one eats at a time at which one will not have appetite or when it will be too late for some members of the family to participate. For this reason we offer two times for Kabbalat Yom Tov: Mincha followed Maariv at 7.15pm, with the earliest time for Hadlakat HaNerot at 7.10pm. Kiddush and the meal can then be made immediately upon one's return home from shul. Latest time for start of Yom Tov and Mincha at 8.33pm, followed by a shiur and late Maariv at 9.39pm 2. For those who say Yizkor, many have the minhag to light a Yahrzheit candle in advance of Chaggim on which we say Yizkor. On Yom Tov we can only light from pre-existing flames. For this reason, a 24 or 48 hour candle might be useful for lighting the second day candles and for those who will wish to light their gas stove tops over Yom Tov TIKKUN LEYL 3. Please see HERE for full details of our communal Tikkun Leyl learning programmes, including for main learning programme, Youth and Lehava (young ladies) 4.
