Officials: Troy Karr, David Nite, Tina Harrington Technical fouls: North Florida – None. Bethune-Cookman – None. Attendance: 378 Score by Period 1st 2nd Total North Florida 34 22 56 Bethune-Cookman 35 33 68 Youthful mistakes doom Lady Ospreys DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Despite four 3-pointers by freshman Jadhken Kerr, the youth of the University of North Florida women's basketball showed in the team's season opener Friday against Bethune-Cookman at Embry-Riddle University, and the Lady Ospreys suffered a 68-52 loss. "We got run over tonight," said UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We really weren't ready to play and our young players were unprepared for the challenges of playing on the road." Freshman Kayla Mobley sank the final five points of the first half, including a 3- point bucket at the buzzer to help the Lady Ospreys go to the break at only a one point deficit (35-34) after the first 20 minutes of play featured seven lead changes and four ties. Both teams led by as many as five in the first half with the Lady Ospreys taking a 25-20 lead a little more than five minutes before halftime. That lead was erased by three turnovers and three missed shots. The Lady Wildcats went on a 12-2 run, pushing the score in their favor to 31-27 with a little less than two minutes on the clock. Mobley made her run after redshirt freshman Rachelle Rasley drained a pair of free throws at the 1:21 mark. Though UNF pulled down only four less rebounds than Bethune-Cookman in the first half (24-20), the Lady Wildcats grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points. In the second half, UNF struggled to find the bottom of the net, managing just 21 points and watching the Lady Wildcats open the period on a 10-1 run. The Lady Ospreys appeared to turn the tide when freshman Brittany Kirkland slashed through the lane and banked a layup off the glass with 15:12 remaining in the game, but Jalisa Isaac responded by draining a shot from behind the arc, sparking another Lady Wildcat outburst. "Though our freshmen scored some big baskets for us, we showed our inexpe- rience on the defensive end," Tappmeyer said. "They exploited our defensive inabil- ities, particularly when we had four freshmen on the floor." Bethune-Cookman went up by as much as 18 within the next six minutes before the Lady Ospreys scored eight straight to cut into the Lady Wildcat lead. Senior Jennifer Bowen sparked the run with a shot from downtown – her only bucket of the game – at the 6:20 mark and junior Shennette Sheffield added a layup 35 seconds later. The run was capped by a 3-pointer by redshirt freshman Rachelle Rasley with five minutes and four seconds left in the game, and UNF looked to be climbing back into the contest. However, the Lady Wildcats responded with an eight-point run of their own, making the score 68-50 with a little more than two minutes remaining. Shots from behind the arc by Kerr and sophomore Juliemay Syquio pulled the Lady Ospreys to the final 68-56 deficit. www.UNFOspreys.com
