SEPT 2017 www.svdghana.org e.mail: [email protected] FROM THE PROVINCIAL’S DESK

Rooted in Dear Confreres, PEACE the w“ ord, committed to Christmas is still weeks away. Surely, I mean that joyous season filled with sentiments of happiness for the birth of the Father‟s beloved Son, Our his Mission. Redeemer; Jesus the Divine Word made incarnate, the Prince of Peace! M k6. 30-32 Choosing “PEACE” as the theme of her Retreat during our first SVD annual retreat, Rev. Sr. Cecilia Kudexa, SMMC might simply be reminding us, midway through the year 2017 to prepare to welcome the King of Peace, Jesus the Redeemer. It is by Sr Cecilia helped us to explore the diverse aspects/dimensions of listening to the PEACE: peace-building and how to attain Peace, as inspired by Luke 10:5-6. We, as Divine Word Missionaries are supposed to be genuine „bearers‟ of word of God the Divine Word, and this Word, is the Prince of Peace; “are we all conscious of this?” she interrogated. We are thus, to preach this Prince of and living it that peace, this unique Peace of the Redeemer. “However, do we ourselves truly live at peace, and genuinely imbibe peaceful loving atmosphere?” she asked. She applied the well-known adage: “you cannot give what you do we become not have.” So, we must first cultivate this peace, and live by it so that it co- workers of flows to liberate the captive, just like in the imagery of the stream of water the Divine flowing from the Temple in Ezekiel 47:1ff. Sr. Cecilia challenged us seriously to reflect on the kind of peace that flows from within our hearts. What legacy do we leave behind, whenever Word... we depart from one place to the other, as Divine Word Missionaries? Do we bring forth, and leave behind, life-giving water, the spirit of renewal and freshness; or rather we leave behind, chaos, bitterness, disharmony, fear, insecurity and so on. We must cultivate the former, and rid ourselves of the People must be later, Sr. Cecilia humbly advised.

able to As Divine Word Missionaries, there are certain moments and events that mark our common vocation and highlight our rededication to our recognize that religious and missionary ideals. We have just witnessed some of these events and moments: The profession of First vows, and Perpetual Vows, the we have Ordination to the Priesthood, admissions to the Novitiate and to the initial experienced in Formation programme by Seminarians and Brother Candidates and, finally, the commencement of a new Provincial administration team for a three-year our own lives term. The designation of new local superiors, new appointments, transfers, and re-assignments, remain key moments for all of us to ponder personally the kingdom on our own vocation, and our efforts to emulate the Divine Word, our Lord and Redeemer, so that we may preach His Good News more in genuine that we proclaim actions and words. to others. Surely, sometimes, it is a real challenge and discomfort to move from one Cons. 106 assignment or apostolate to another, to move from one 1 community to another to continue to exemplify our Lord‟s mission.

SVD Ghana-Liberia Newsletter September 2017 PAGE 2

Probably, Sr. Cecilia‟s caution to all of us to be alert not to be forcing our own plans into God‟s plan for us, should be adhered to. As religious, we are to rather enhance God‟s plan for us, we are to fit our plans into God‟s plan. When we fail to do so, we may know more discomfort, more absence of the inner peace that enhances our apostolate. Bishop Kumordji, SVD, during the closing Mass of our 75th Diamond Jubilee in 2015, at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Accra did emphasise this same concern raised by Sr. Cecilia. Maybe both have seen the harm we do to ourselves when we embark on pushing our own plans instead of those of God.

Permit me to recall here the beautiful excerpts written in the May 2017 edition of ARNOLDUS NOTA (p.7), by the Leadership team of INM on transfers and new assignments. It is worth reading it again. It is titled: “Oh God! Why this Transfer?” In my opinion, this is a “must-read” for all priests and religious. It provides us reasons and attitudes that would help us maintain our inner peace in the face of the “sure-to-arrive” day of transfer, which may be sooner or later in our lives and ministries.

With this, I wish you all, the profound peace of the Lord in your various communities, and most especially, I extend my esteemed respect and honour to those who have to leave to new communities, or take up new responsibilities, away from their usual probably comfortable zones. God bless us all!

The Mass at the Castle Drive chapel was presided over by Fr. George Angmor the provincial appointed for the second term. The homily was delivered by Most Rev. Gabriel Kumordji, SVD. He reflected on “What is particular about our spirituality as SVDs?” PROVINCIAL SUPERIOR: Rev. Fr. George Clement Angmor, Obviously, it is the Word taken from the prologue (in the middle) which is not just a statement but a prayer. He VICE-PROVINCIAL: Rev. Fr. Marek Dabrowski recalled how the parents of Arnold Janssen our (Extreme left) founder used the prologue as a prayer especially ADMONITOR: Rev. Fr.Andrews Aboagye Obeng when there were threatening disasters like thunder. (2nd from right) Thus, the centrality of our spirituality is the Word. 1ST COUNCILOR: Bro. Oswald Bangfo The question he posed to us was “how is this Word (2nd from left) influencing our missionary and religious activities?” 2ND. COUNCILOR Rev. Fr. Jojo George Monoth For him, the Word should permeate every activity (Extreme right) that we undertake which ultimately should bring joy

and salvation to the people we work with. Present were Sr. Dinah Ofosu, SSpS Provincial Leader and Sr. Mathilda Sorkpor the General Superior of the HDR. Also, there were a number of confreres, some family members of the provincial, friends of the SVD among others.

Giving a goodwill message on behalf of the confreres, Fr. Konrad Dreyer encouraged the Councillors and exhorted them to be circumspect in their decisions especially when it comes to appointments, they should consider the charisms and the capabilities of the confrere so that the confrere is happy, “for a happy and a satisfied confrere normally works well”. The SSpS, HDR Superiors as well as friends of the SVD also wished the team well in their respective goodwill messages.

Talking later to some of the confreres of their expectations of the new Council, these are what they expressed. “We expect a good leadership spirit”. “I expect the human resource management of the province to be improved.” “The self reliance projects initiated by the previous team should be intensified by the new Council”

A memorial Mass held for

Fr. Henry Noordemeer, SVD and Sr. Aquilanis, SSpS

The Mass was presided over by Archbishop Buckle on the 5th of July at Christ the King for the late Fr. Henry Noordermeer, SVD and Sr. Aquilanis, SSpS, both one-time missionaries in Ghana. The sermon was delivered by Fr. Vincent Owusu. He recalled their time in Ghana and the legacy they left behind as missionaries.

Born in Leimuiden, Holland on March 28, 1938 Fr. Henry Noordermeer was Ordained in 1963 and appointed to Ghana. His first appointment was to St. Michael’s parish at to join Father Aloysius Turbek and later to . There he lived together with one of the first Ghanaian priests, Fr. Francis Ankrah. With his background in farming, he began to cultivate 10 acres of land for the production of cassava, corn and cocoyam. He also started raising chickens. After his leave in 1973, he was sent to .

From October 1981, Henry was in , together with a Filipino confrere. He was one of the few missionaries, who learned the Twi language well and was able to preach in it without a translator. Together with his head teacher David Asare Bediako he produced five volumes of Twi songs that were sung in many places, a pioneering contribution to the inculturation of the liturgy. In 1990, Henry, became the vice provincial of Ghana / Togo / Benin Province. Later he worked as a pastor in Donkorkrom, Afram Plains. There he got ill and went home. Upon his return, he retired at the McCarthy Hill residence. Still burning with pastoral zeal, he took on pastoral responsibility at Obuom. Fr. Henry was known to be a man of swimming pools; wherever he found himself, he constructed a small swimming pool. In April 2016, Henry returned to the Netherlands with a malignant disease, an advanced stage of skin cancer. He hoped to be treated and return to Ghana but on the 1st of June 2017, Fr. Henry breathed his last.

Sr. Aquilanis Maria Hungerkamp was born on 26th July 1931 in Germany into a large family. Her mother died when she was a teenager and the family had to be separated and divided among various relatives. This probably made their bond as siblings much stronger and it remained that way throughout her life. They were very supportive to Sr. Aquilanis and her missionary activities in Ghana.

Sr. Aquilanis was missioned to Ghana in 1959. She readily offered herself to the service of Ghana wholeheartedly and remained here until she returned to Wimbern, Germany in 2005 because of ill health.

As soon as the boat landed in Takoradi, she was sent to take care of the sisters in so many communities in Ghana since she was a “house manageress.” Being sent to St. Agnes Convent, Koforidua, it was her assignment to go for home and hospital visitation every day with a mission girl. In sharing her experiences, she said in one year she was transferred three times because she had to “fill holes” since sisters were going on home leaves. When the yearly retreats would be organized at St. Mary’s Convent, she always came with her heart ready to receive the news that after the retreat she would be sent to another community, to fill “another hole.” Yet, she did this with a ready heart – a missionary heart! Some of the places she shared life and mission were: Kwahu Tafo, Nkawkaw and Korle Gonno, Accra.

We cannot overlook her great pioneering efforts when she and Sr. Mary Joseph Hofshulte re- opened the Afram Plains in 1986. Being a strong support to one another, they made the SSpS first house there in Donkorkrom a true home. St. Mary’s Community was her last community before she was transferred to her home Province in Germany where she died on 24th April 2017. May she rest in perfect peace PAGE 6

Charles Lwanga launches 50 years

‘Rooted in the word, committed to his mission as one family with one faith’.This is the slogan of the Golden Jubilee of St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Abeka-Accra, a Parish started by the SVD and still being managed by the SVD. This theme, obviously influenced by the theme of the XVIII SVD General Chapter, has been embraced with passion by the parish community. Launching the year-long celebration, Mr. Bob Foli the Chairman of the 50th anniversary committee paid tribute to the pioneers of the parish who toiled to make the parish what it is today. The pioneer SVDs like Fr. Rosslein, were acknowledged. He also outlined some of the activities that would be realised in the course of the anniversary year.

The Mass was presided over by Fr. Joannes Mintah Mensah of the Accra Archdiocese, a son of the parish. He was assisted at the altar by Fr. Andrew Quaye-Foli, SVD, Parish Priest and Rev. Michel Manga, SVD.

Some of the Parishioners expressed their gratitude for how far the Lord has brought them. A 97 year old Madam Georgina Lyle who saw the beginnings of the church recalls “when I was a teacher at Christ the King the then headmistress gave me clothes left by the whites to be sold to build the church and Fr. Rosslein came to pick the clothes which we sold at „donkomi‟ (i.e at a reduced price). Following that I suggested to Mr.Quindry the then catechist that there was a piece of land available. Fr. Roesslein agreed and the land was bought leading to the construction of the little church. As a teacher, I proposed to Fr. Roesslein to start a school which he accepted and later the construction of the church followed.” St. Charles Lwanga Church, Abeka-Accra If you visit St. Charles Lwanga Parish, the greeting is Rooted in the Word and the response is committed to his mission as one family with one faith’

SEND OFF FOR FR. SAMUEL YAW ADU On the 19th of March 2017, the St. Joseph Frienademetz House of philosophy organized a send-off for Fr. Samuel Adu, SVD, who is currently pursuing studies in missiology in Rome. Fr. Samuel was the bursar of the house.

During the Mass which he presided over, Fr Samuel expressed his gratitude to all those who cooperated with him in the discharge of his duty as bursar most especially to his confreres, the postulants and all who visit the community for Mass. Also, on behalf of the community, Fr Benjamin Asare, SVD the Preases of the house thanked Fr. Samuel for his dedicated service to the community and wished him well as he leaves for further studies.

In the evening of the same day, there was a send-off party organized for him by the community, which was attended by some formators from St. Victors and SAMMs, MSOLA Sisters from Gumu, confreres from CFC and TICCS who shared their fond memories and how they experienced Fr Samuel Adu. They testified to his humility, dedication to duty, the readiness to accept roles assigned to him and his warm smiles. They wished him the best as he takes up a new responsibility and a new mission. A citation was presented to him by the postulants on behalf of the community. Paul Amuzu, Frienademtez House, Tamale

NORTHERN SECTOR CELEBRATES FAMILY FEAST

The northern sector of the Arnoldus family has organized its family feast celebration for the year 2017. The annual event was hosted by the Tamale house and it took place at St. Joseph Frienadematz house of Philosophy. Present at the occasion were confreres from Kintampo, New Longoro, Saboba, Yendi, and Tamale, the seminarians from both Freinademetz and CFC, SSpS sisters as well as some invited guests.

The joyous day celebration began with a solemn Mass which was celebrated by Bishop Vincent Boi-Nai and concelebrated by some of the priests with the seminarians serving as the choir to spice the Mass with some good tunes. The celebration coincided with the vows and priestly anniversaries of some confreres. Notable among them were Fr. Tomy Thomas, Bishop Boi-Nai, Fr. Alex Chandy, among others.

Fr. Tomy Thomas, SVD who was the homilist, used the opportunity to share with those present his experience as a priest over the past 25years all of which have been spent in the Yendi missions. He recounted how challenging it was for him in the beginning but through the Grace of God found fulfillment all these years. He encouraged the Confreres to be committed to the mission and to the vows they have embraced.

Earlier also, Most Rev Vincent Boi-Nai consecrated the Mother of Divine Grace Grotto, where the Mass took Place. The grotto was started some five years ago by the postulants through fundraising during holidays. He was grateful to God and to the formators and postulants of the St Joseph Frienademetz house for the hard work and dedication in making it possible to put up the grotto. He urged them never to cease seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

After the Mass, there was socialization and fun games which included volley ball, table tennis as well as indoor games. There was also a lot to eat and drink accompanied by music which got many on their feet dancing.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION MARKED AT

The Asesewa Roman Catholic (R/C) Basic (Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High) Schools recently marked the 2017 edition of the catholic Education Week celebration. Mr. Vincent Tandor, the Head teacher of the primary school launched the programme during a Holy Mass which was presided over by Rev. Fr. David Selasie Agah, SVD. Mr. Tandor in his launching message touted the significance of Catholic Education and the immeasurable positive impact it had made on society over the years and challenged parents to take their children‟s education seriously. He invited them to turn up in their numbers to participate in the weeklong celebration. The theme for the celebration was: “Catholic Education, Formation for Transformation.”

Some activities that were undertaken during the celebration were: street procession, candle light procession, student and PTA durbars and games. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper Manya Krobo District took turns during the durbars to give talks on security alertness, and the need to be patriotic citizens and committed Christians respectively. Reflecting on the day‟s gospel, he admonished the congregants to learn from Jesus, who unlike Adam and Eve, leaned on God and overcame the devil‟s triple temptations. He encouraged them to draw near to God through prayer and fasting so as to be spiritually inspired and strengthened.

Other animators who assisted the children during the celebration were Miss Christie Kafui Anago, Mrs. Veronica Kateye, Mrs. Mary Teye, Miss Mary Noellla Antowine, Miss Joana Owusu, Mr. Felix Kateye and Mr. Paul Nsoh Akolgo. In all, about 80 children participated in the programme.

Although there are SVDs from the Afram Plains, this is the first time that profession of perpetual vows has taken place in the area. This celebration brought together all the priests and religious working in the vicariate as well as a number of confreres, religious and seminarians. A number of pastors from other Christian denominations were present as well as politicians. Fr. George Angmor, SVD Ghana-Liberia Provincial presided over the Mass.

In the absence of the Apostolic Adminstrator, Fr. John Duah Prempeh, SVD the former Vicar General welcomed all and sundry to the celebration. Preaching the sermon, Fr. George Angmor praised Br. Wisdom for his readiness for the mission.

A mass choir from the vicariate was there to grace the occasion with their singing. Bro. thanked all for his vocation especially the confreres who once worked in Tease.

ST. PETER’S SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

“This school is fondly referred to as ‘KWAHU UNIVERSITY’. To speak of education in the and for that matter Ghana, without mentioning St. Peter’s Senior High School (PERSCO) is a non-starter.” These were words of the Headmaster of St. Peter’s during the climax ceremony of the 60th anniversary of the school on the 17th of June. He expressed profound gratitude to the SVD for starting the school and to make it what it is today.

From its inception in 1957, the SVDs have headed the school: Beginning with Fr. Clement Hotze, through Fr. Josef Glatzel, Alois Hoguth, Anthony Dugay till 1992 when lay persons came in. Today, we have our confrere Fr. Daniel Lenwah as Assistant Headmaster and Fr. Martin Ninnang as the Chaplain.

The ceremony brought together a large number of old students, parents the chiefs and the elders of the Kwahu area who are very proud to have such a school on their land.

Also present were Bishop Afrifa and our novitiate community as well as Fr. George Angmor, the Provincial. Below is the provincial’s goodwill message: 60 YEARS OF QUALITY CATHOLIC EDUCATION: ACHIEVEMENTS, PROSPECTS AND THE WAY FORWARD. Dear friends, by the grace of God, what begun in a very humble way with thirty-six students over sixty years ago, had blossomed in every way that we can imagine and bringing us all together here today. Dear Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Chairman for this occasion, Perscoba Prof. Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu, specially invited guests, Nananom, the Headmaster, Mr. Matthias Kudiabor, staff and students of St. Peter’s Senior High School, Friends and family; on theoccasion of your sixtieth anniversary, I pay tribute to the founding fathers, the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, the Chiefs and SVD Ghana-Liberia Newsletter September 2017 PAGE 13 people of Kwahu Traditional Area, and the current Administration of the school for the hard work, sacrifice and academic achievements the school has chalked over the years.

St. Peters SHS has a great vision which is “To ensure that boys from diverse backgrounds obtain quality education within the principles of Catholic Education”. It is not surprising then that we have students coming from every part of our dear Motherland. The school’s mission is:to provide integral and quality education to boys for them to become responsible to all societies and to themselves. Today, one can find St. Peter’s old boys working in almost all the sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The vision and mission are therefore both aimed at ensuring a holistic formation of the future leaders of Ghana in particular and the whole world in general. This is in line with the biblical mandate which says that children should be taught the way they should go and when they grow they will not depart from that sound teaching (Prov. 22:6). Events in the immediate past weeks in our county remind us that this is an important endeavor to undertake.

Indeed, we, the Divine Word Missionaries, have made integral and quality education part and parcel of our missionary mandate. This has always been part of our values in the over seventy (70) countries that we work in. From the very beginning of St. Peter’s Senior High School, our confreres have been working with the people of Nkwatia and its environs which culminated in the birth and development of St. Peter’s SHS for 60 years now. I commend all the stakeholders of the school for the high academic achievements and infrastructural developments over the years. Nonetheless, there is still more yet to be done and we shall all work together with the stakeholders for the purpose of pushing forward the prospects of higher achievements.

On the occasion of your sixtieth anniversary of foundation, we implore your patron saint St. Peter Claver, to intercede from the Lord, abundant blessings upon this school and all the students and staff and administration at the different levels so that you can continue to blossom ever more gloriously to the glory of God, when and wherever products from this school are met.

Long live Catholic Education! Long live the SVD!! Long live PERSCO!!!

May the darkness of sin and the night of unbelief vanish be the light of the Word and Spirit of grace. And may the Heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all people!

COMMUNICATION MINISTRY Coordinator: Fr. Rex A. Vegbey, SVD Following this year’s Communication course in the novitiate we bring you an article by one to the participants: COMMUNICATION BEYOND LIMIT After the course on communication at the novitiate in Nkwatia-Kwahu by Fr. Rex A. Vegbey, SVD on 20th to 24th March 2017, I realised that communication helps us to share effectively with other people the word of God by simple means. I have also discovered that the art of communication is beyond writing newsletters; it goes hand in hand with signs of the time. Communication is daily living. We engage in discussion face to face and from time to time. In our era, communication has changed its pattern and we need to put ourselves into those signs of time. Sometime as ministers of Christ there is the need to reach out to people wherever they are. We have to consider the best means of communication in the area we find ourselves and the people with whom we live. Beyond all the means we adopt, there is always a need to remember that our life communicates more than words. Our life should reflect the life of Christ whom we are following, it should be characterized by love, even in our own community. As religious our love should be reflected among us before we move out. Sometimes it is not easy but with God everything is possible. With the diversity of communication methods in the modern world, each one of us should be able to cope with the new trends. Now we can reach out to people easily through internet. People do not have time to read newsletters, but they have time to browse on their phone to see the whatsapp messages, Skype, Imo and many other apps. We have to involve ourselves in reaching the youth and the old by sending them reflections, bible quotes and encouragements, but we must make it short and attractive. If it is difficult, ask people to help especially the youth around you, to create the Facebook platform for our parishes. This is one way to reach out and share with them the Gospel. As we read the signs of the time and contribute to new ways of communication we should always remember that we are ministers of Jesus Christ, so our contributions should be centred on him. We have to engage in healthy discussions characterized by our faith. One simple wrong comment will reach millions of people in a second and the face of the world will change. Everybody is encouraged to involve herself/himself in sharing the word of God through the use of modern media. One must not say that one is not conversant with this modern means of communication. We are all encouraged to embrace this form of communication, create dramas to capture the interest of people and share the message of Christ. FRT. WYCLIFFE OGETONTO OGEGA

OTP in Taiwan: Cultural encounter in an Asian country Taiwan, Republic Of China (ROC) As Divine Word Missionaries, practical pastoral experience is a necessary part of our formation process. For this reason having completed three years of Theology at Saint Victor‟s Major Seminary in Tamale, I opted for an Overseas Training Program in Taiwan. I would like to share some of the experiences that I have made during my two-year programme.

Even before I left the shores of Ghana, I began my personal experience and learning process. My flight, originally, booked for 8th August 2015, had to be postponed to 15th August. What happened? A week before my departure, while going to meet the Provincial I alighted from a commercial vehicle, „trotro‟, only to realize that the envelope containing my travel documents (passport and Yellow card) were stolen. Every attempt to find them was futile. Thanks to the permission and help of the Provincial, Fr George Angmor I was allowed to go back to Benin to process another Passport and Visa.

I left Ghana on the solemnity of Assumption and successfully landed in Taiwan on 17th August 2015, and my cultural encounter with the Asian world started right away. Instead of fork and knife, I was given chopsticks to eat at lunch. I was given a new Chinese name, 黎紹熙 (LíShàoxī). The following morning, for the first time, I participated in a Holy Mass celebrated in Chinese.

Very quickly, I understood the complex political situation that exists in China. It is the “One China, two countries politics”. Politically, there are two types of China: TAIWAN (Republic of China, ROC) whose capital city is Taipei (台北) and CHINA (People‟s Republic of China, PROC) having Beijing (北京) as its capital city. China is also referred to as „‟Mainland China‟‟. Taiwan is in fact and indeed a democratic and independent country, while Mainland China continues claiming territorial ownership over Taiwan. The two countries have Chinese as official language. Chinese is also spoken in Singapore and Malaysia. However, Taiwan is the only country that still uses the traditional Chinese characters in the educational system. Apart from Chinese Language, Taiwan has its own Taiwanese Language known as 台語(Táiyŭ. Other Chinese speaking countries adopted the simplified Chinese characters.

Entering a new culture is always challenging and frightening at the beginning. When I went, because of the language I hardly talk. I took my time to listen and to process some basic conversational dialogue patterns. In a very short time, it yielded dividends. My ability to listen facilitated the learning process. As it turned out to be, Chinese language is not the most difficult. The only point is that the language has many characters, and the best way to be familiar with them is to keep on practising through writing and reading. Culturally, Taiwanese – and Chinese in general – are quite introverts at first sight. However, a close contact with them reveals hidden warmth and a great sense of interest and positive curiosity about other people‟s culture. For instance, the first time I took MRT, a Taiwanese woman in her late twenties or early thirties asked to shake hands with me, and she held my hand for more than two minutes. On the basket-ball pitch, many people are interested in interacting with the „only black man‟ around. Parents even brought their kids to shake hands with me, etc.

In Taiwan, animals like cats and dogs are held in great esteem. It is legally prohibited to kill or harm them. There are even first class restaurants solely reserved for dogs and cats, where their owners take them for breakfast, lunch or supper. I happened to mistakenly enter one, just behind our Fu Jen Catholic University(輔仁大學. In Taiwan, Homosexuality is increasingly becoming common. Actually, on 24th May 2017, The Taiwan Constitutional Court rules in favour of same-sex marriage becoming the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. In the landmark ruling, Taiwan‟s Council of Grand Justices stated that the Civil Code which does not ensure same-sex marriage rights is unconstitutional and asked the Legislature to amend relevant laws within two years to protect the interests of gay couples. All attempted effort by Catholics and other religious groups to oppose the bill failed. Another remarkable social phenomenon is that the percentage of aged people had surpassed that of the youth since last February 2017. In an atmosphere of Religious freedom, Catholic Christians are minority. Churches are well built and decorated, but almost two third of the faithful are old people. The country is mainly Buddhist and everything ending with ‟‟-ism‟‟. But, we still have few faithful, even though their number keeps decreasing. In Taiwan, universities have started merging up or closing down, due to lack of students. This is caused by the low birth rate leading to a decline in enrolment at the university level. To conclude, Taiwan broadened my views on various human realities. I was able to discover that “every place is a mission field”. I am grateful to the Society of the Divine Word and the Ghana Province in particular for giving me the opportunity to make this OTP experience. To the Almighty God be all glory and praise! By Frt. Valentin LISSASSI 黎紹熙, SVD, CFC Tamale
