Types of Western Saddles The following are representatives of the most commonly available Western saddles. You should work with a professional to determine the saddle that is best for you based on the discipline you ride, the conformation of your horse, and your budget. Roping : The roping saddle is used in competition and to work cattle. The large wrapped horn, low swell, and deep seat are characteristic of roping saddles. Roping saddles are designed to keep the riders balance over the center of the saddle (with the rider in an upright position) so that he or she can throw the rope. Reining : The reining saddle is used by western reiners who perform patterns in competition including circles, sliding stops and spins. The reining saddle has a characteristic low cantle, low, small horn, and is designed to be somewhat lighter with a smaller swell than other western saddles. Fenders are generally positioned so that the stirrup falls under the swell. This allows the rider to sit in the seat for those quick stops. Cutting : The cutting saddle is used in competition and to work cattle (or cut them from the herd). The cutting saddle generally has a larger horn and swell than the reining saddle but is similar in many ways including fender placement and cantle height. The horn of some cutting saddles is angled slightly for- ward. Some reining riders prefer a cutting saddle. Pleasure : The Western pleasure saddle is used for trail and pleasure riding as well as competition. Show or equitation saddles typically are ornate with silver conchos and accents, and may feature intri- cate leather tooling. PROGRAMS THAT EXTEND THE USEFUL LIVES OF HORSES: Supply and demand — they are the ingredients that form the foundation for near- ly all successful business models. Markets are sound and profitable when there is a healthy balance between the two. The theory holds true for the horse market as well. Often, however, owners may not be aware of the demands that exist for horses that may be “unwanted” by some, but desired by others. The purpose of this chapter is to show some of the many programs already in place by horse breed organizations and other groups, in which horses are needed by participants. From trail riding enthusiasts to horse show exhibitors, people are searching every day for horses that fit their lifestyles and interests. By understanding the activities encouraged by breed organizations, owners of some unwanted horses might find a good fit, and a good market, among people seeking horses for organized shows and rec- reational events. Following is a listing of some of the most popular programs and activities underway today and some true-life stories of unwanted horses that developed into champions. Competitive Horse Shows: Nearly all horse breed associations offer opportunities for friendly competition. Although a horse may be retired or reaching advanced years of maturity, horse shows offer outlets to help keep the horse active and involved. The registries offer several different disciplines with classes ranging from leadline to saddle seat pleasure to barrel racing. A horse owner can often find a way to keep horses involved for a long time in the variety of disciplines offered in the showing world.

CHAPTER 53-10 EQUINE ACTIVITY SPONSOR OR PROFESSIONAL 53-10-01. Definitions. In this chapter, unless the context or subject matter otherwise requires: 1. "Engages in an equine activity" means a person who rides, trains, drives, or is a passenger upon an equine, whether mounted or unmounted, and does not mean a spectator in equine activity or a person who participates in the equine activity but does not ride, train, drive, or ride as a passenger upon an equine. 2. "Equine" means a horse, pony, mule, donkey, or hinny. 3. "Equine activity" means: a. An equine show, fair, competition, performance, or parade that involves any breed of equine in any equine discipline, including dressage, a hunter and jumper horse show, grand prix jumping, a three-day event, combined training, a rodeo, driving, pulling, cutting, polo, steeplechasing, endurance, trail riding, guided trail rides, pleasure trail riding, wagon and buggy rides, and western games and hunting; b. An equine training or teaching activity; c. Boarding an equine; d. Riding, inspecting, or evaluating an equine belonging to another whether or not the owner has received some monetary consideration or other thing of value for the use of the equine or is permitting a prospective purchaser of the equine to ride, inspect, or evaluate the equine; and e. A ride, trip, hunt, or other equine activity of any type however informal or impromptu that is sponsored by an equine activity sponsor. 4. "Equine activity sponsor" means an individual, group, club, partnership, corporation, or limited liability company, whether or not the sponsor is operating for profit or nonprofit, which sponsors, organizes, or provides the facility for an equine activity including a pony club, 4-H club, hunt club, riding club, school or college-sponsored class or program, therapeutic riding program, and an operator, instructor, or promoter of an equine facility including but not limited to a stable, clubhouse, pony ride string, fair, or arena at which the activity is held.

In the event a show member of this Association is also a regular member competition of United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. ("USEF") and there is a conflict of rules, the rules of USEF shall prevail. In the event a show member of this Association (held within the boundaries of the state of California) is also a show member of another horse show association other than USEF and there is a conflict of rules, the rules of the GSDHJA shall prevail.
