I now have a much clearer vision of how my collection should look. I love all of my bears, but have simply run out of room and want to cut back a large percentage, so I can re-grow it with my current knowledge. So it’s time to call the auctioneers in, I can’t think of any safer hands to pass them onto than my teddy friend, Daniel Agnew of Special Auction Services, to send them all to their new homes. I think it would be great fun and I will enjoy seeing my beloved bears finding new owners.” “I first started collecting teddy bears because my daughter-in-law bought me a teddy bear and the Teddy Bear Encyclopaedia for a milestone birthday, which sparked an interest and I started looking at antique bears online.

CHEEKY & PUNKIE BEARS 2020 COLLECTION It is with a great sense of pride that I welcome you to Merrythought’s 2020 collection of Cheeky and Punkie bears It was 90 years ago this year when my great-grandfather started to realise his ambition to create Britain’s leading soft toy company, and it is testimony to his talent and dedication, and that of my grandfather and late father who followed him, that his legacy lives on today. I am honoured that Merrythought has been at the heart of my family for four generations, and that with the help of the fantastic team at our home in Ironbridge, the company continues to hand-make each teddy bear in the same building where it all began, back in 1930. This collection showcases Merrythought’s special 90th Anniversary Commemorative Cheeky and Teddy Bears, featured on pages 11 and 12, along with a beautiful range of new limited edition characters that really celebrate our high standards of quality and design. • Collecting Old Teddy Bears Part I: Old English Bears by Jill Byron
Teddy Bears Collecting Old Teddy Bears Part I: Old English Bears by Jill Byron There is something very comforting about a teddy bear. They have always been beloved childhood companions and if you are feeling lonely, miserable, or ill, just cuddling a teddy bear can make you feel better. I have certainly found this to be true and two of my own bears, one old and one modern, have helped me through some of the worst times of my life. Chad Valley, William J. Terry, Chiltern, Merrythought, Deans, Invicta, Omega and Farnell, are just a few of the English companies who made teddy bears in the early part of the last century. 1930s pink and blue Chilterns. Pink 1948 Farnell with a wonderful face. Others include Steevans, Ealontoys, Pedigree, Wendy Boston, Plummer bear bought from ‘Old Time Bears’ Bought from a teddy bear shop in in 2005 for £185. Blue bear bought Llangollen, which sadly no longer Wandless and Co. and Pixie Toys. at a bear fair for £140. exists. £250. Chiltern are among the most popular of the English makers. Their teddies usually have a sweet face and as any collector will tell you, this is very important, as the face is always the thing that makes you want to buy the bear. Chiltern ‘Master Teddy’ was the first bear ever made by this company in 1915. He was worth around £1,500-£1,800 a few years ago but although he is a victim of the times, he is very rare and will have held his value better than many.

  • Traditional Teddy Bears 2020
Merrythought Ltd, Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire, TF8 7NJ www.merrythought.com #merrythoughtbears Made in England Est. 1930 Four generations of the finest teddy bears The story of Merrythought began in 1930, when Gordon Holmes, owner of a mohair spinning mill in Yorkshire, recognised an opportunity to make beautiful soft toys from this special fleece. His wish was to create the very finest teddy bears that would be cherished by children and adults for years to come. Gordon discovered a beautiful brick foundry building in the heart of Shropshire, and with the help of a small team of skilled local seamstresses, Merrythought was born. The original workshop remains our home to this day; an enchanting place where each soft toy is expertly brought to life using luxury materials and traditional craftsmanship that has been handed down the four generations of our family business. Only soft toys of the highest quality are allowed to carry the trusted Merrythought label. We therefore ensure the utmost care and attention to detail in everything that we do, right down to the hand-embroidered nose and delightful smile that makes each teddy bear so unique. A Merrythought is not just a teddy bear, but an exquisite piece of British heritage and a loyal companion through life. www.merrythought.com 1 Hand-making the perfect teddy bear At Merrythought we source only premium materials to lovingly create our teddy bears. The best quality mohair or alpaca plush is selected and neatly cut to each soft toy’s unique set of patterns, many of which are based on original templates from the earliest years.

Abstract This thesis is the final assignment for a B.Ed. degree in educational science, with a major in textile studies, from the University of Iceland. The main subject of this thesis are teddy bears and the emotional and psychological connection that forms between individuals and teddy bears and by that prove that the teddy bear is a much bigger and more complex phenomenon than a regular childhood toy. The thesis also runs through the creation of the teddy bear and its remarkable history and how it’s possible not only to use the teddy bear itself but also the psychological bond we form with them in pre- and grade school education.
