    Skill: The Positive Case (or: In Praise Of Lear- ning) Published in The Re Records Quarterly Vol. 2 n˚ 2, London, Recommended Records, 1987 This article was written with a word processing program - View - on a popular British microcom- puter (a BBC Master Series micro). It was printed in 'near letter quality' on a Centronics printer. Most probably, what you are reading now is a plain reproduction of the computer printout: this was arranged by the author so that the format would coincide with the one used in the first article of this series, by Chris Cutler. You may notice that there are no italics, here (substituted by underlining), as H80 Centronics printers do not have italics in 'near letter quality' mode (which is standard, instead, in more recent printers). To obtain the same character quality of that ar- ticle, a more expensive daisy wheel printer should have been used; however, even in that case italics wouldn't have been included: View, in fact, doesn't allow changing daisies during printing (which is standard in more recent word processors). Anyway, despite these limits, you will probably acknowledge that the result is readable: it should be added that the way it has Skill: The Positive Case (or: In Praise Of Learning) 2 been produced spared typesetting and proof- reading, which means editing time and costs. Im Geschäft lief gerade die CD einer japanischen Noise-Band und die Disharmonien veranlassten einen der Beiden zu der Bemerkung, was das denn für eine Scheiße sei. Woraufhin der La- deninhaber ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken und ohne ein Wort zu verlieren die Lautstärke bis zur Uner- träglichkeit hochdrehte bis die Beiden die Flucht ergriffen. Dies sagt Einiges aus über Konsequenz und Philosophie von DSA. Der Ladeninhaber war Gérard Nguyen, 1951 als Sohn eines vietnamesischen Vaters und einer deut- schen Mutter geboren, in der von Rokoko-Prunk und Industrie gleichermaßen geprägten lothringschen 100 000-Einwohner-Stadt Nancy aufgewachsen und schon früh vom Morbus Musica Experimentalis befallen. Naturgemäß wenig linientreu zu den stilprägenden US-amerikanischen und britischen unabhängigen Labels wie Ralph Records, Rough Trade oder Recommended Records, versuchten die franko- phonen Vertreter der Free Musik und des Punks Anfang der 80er Jahre andere Wege zu gehen. Illusion Prod., Nato, AYAA oder das Kassetten-Label Tago Mago versprachen bezüglich Design und Grad an Strangeness weitere Verheißungen (aufgrund der Kunst- und Philosophiereferenzen gar eine Be- wusstseinserweiterung?) Vor zwanzig Jahren gegründet ist Gérard Nguyens Label (1988 kam der Laden in Nancy, 1998 der in Paris hinzu) heute allerdings eine der wenigen noch existierenden Firmen aus dieser Zeit mit Avantgar- de-Ausrichtung. Der Labelkatalog selbst liest sich heutzutage einerseits wie ein Kompendium der alter- nativen Avantgardeströmungen der letzten 30 Jahre, aber auch wie ein der Qualitätskontrolle verpflich- teter Gradmesser aktueller Tendenzen.

In that sense, the long-lived Montreal band's ninth album, entitled Signal 9, could simply be considered the ninth set of musical messages from that exotic heavenly body. It's been more than three decades since Miriodor sent out its first signal with the release of Rencontres. Since then, they've established themselves as premier practitioners of the RIO (Rock In Opposition) movement, a wing of progressive music pioneered by the likes of Henry Cow, Art Zoyd and Univers Zero that embraces the avant-garde in its agenda of challenging convention at every turn. The Miriodor discography, most of which has been released on U.S maverick institution Cuneiform Records, has been building strength upon strength with each successive album. The band combines jazz, classical, rock, and international influences for an arresting, idiosyncratic sound that eludes description but remains immediately identifiable as Miriodor. Picking up where the most recent coded message from planet Miriodor, 2013's Cobra Fakir, left off, Signal 9 arrives like an invitation to an otherworldly voyage. Each track marks another twist and turn in a journey across strange, captivating landscapes populated by creatures, crafts, and constructions whose like has never been glimpsed outside the band's idiosyncratic ecosystem.
