All About ABBA: a Brief History All about ABBA: A Brief History http://elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle/features/november/abba.htm All about ABBA: A Brief History In the 1970s, there was a group from Sweden and their name was ABBA. The pop group infected the whole world with their infectious melodies and harmonious vocals, and kitsch stage costumes. This is the story of Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid. They started their international fame by competing in the 1974 Eurovision song contest, with a song called “Waterloo.” “Waterloo” was number one in the UK for six weeks, even making it to the US top ten. Many of their biggest hits are instantly recognizable, such as “Fernando,” “SOS,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and their most popular one, “Dancing Queen.” This song was their only number in the US, and it was specially performed at the wedding reception of the King of Sweden. “Dancing Queen” is the most infamous Abba song. Many bands have recorded this classic, including U2 and the A*teens, but no version of the song has ever received success or critical acclaim. No one can remake the original sound and magic that is “Dancing Queen.” They were at their peak of their popularity in the late 1970s, with the release of “Abba: The Movie.” A huge commercial campaign included TV appearances, radio appearances, their own TV specials. They marketed soap, perfume, socks and clothing, and such memorabilia as pins, pens, cardboard displays, posters, and much more. Abba’s success continued until their break up in 1982, when pressures and tensions got worse. Due to the divorces within the group, and the death threats against them, and the kidnapping threats on their children. They disbanded. 94% of the students at ESHS knew who Abba were. 44% said that they like Abba, 27% said they kind of liked Abba, and 27% said they didn’t like Abba. 44% said they didn’t have a favorite band member, 33% said Frida was their favorite, and 22% said they liked Agnetha. 22% said “Dancing Queen” was their favorite Abba song, 33% didn’t know their favorite song, 1% said their favorite was “Fernando,” 1% said “SOS” was their favorite, 1% said “Take a Chance on Me” was their favorite, and 22% said other. Abba is still well known today and are widely popular. Abba are well known and are growing in popularity and have sold more than 350 million records worldwide, becoming the second best selling band of all time, second only to the Beatles. Abba will be remembered for years to come, and aren’t waning in popularity, but rising. Long live Abba. 1 of 1 6/30/2008 4:21 PM.

  • In Focus the Making of the Visitors
People Need Love – the first ABBA song Waterloo was ABBA’s first single, right? Yes – and no. Join us as we explore the story behind People Need Love, the very first single released by the group that later reached worldwide fame under the name ABBA. Party people failure In this day and age, when pop stars with little previous stage experience achieve instant number one hits through participation in television shows such as Pop Idol and American Idol, it is sobering to be reminded how long it actually took before ABBA achieved worldwide success. Although many in the 1970s regarded the four Swedes as a ”manufactured” band, very much along the lines of the groomed, styled and choreographed overnight sensations of the early 21st Century, nothing could be further from the truth. Not only had the individual members spent a decade performing, touring and recording in earlier groups or as solo artists before they grabbed the world’s attention with ’Waterloo’ in April 1974, by that time ABBA themselves had already been making pop music together for two years – and four years had passed since they first attempted a collaboration. Confused? Read on. The early 1970s was a somewhat insecure period for Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida. Benny had left his previous group, The Hep Stars, and although Björn was still making records with his group, the Hootenanny Singers, he knew he couldn’t count on them for any future career advancement. Furthermore, Björn and Benny wanted to focus their attention on their partnership in songwriting and record producing, and perhaps not be performers so much anymore.

  • Abba's :Album' Makes Listening Fun
Abba's :Album' Makes Listening Fun By Bernie Russell Start with Jackson Browne and Paul Simon and begin moving in the other direction; past the Eagles, past Fleetwood Mac, past the Bee Gees, and past Barry Manilow and you finally end up with Abba. Abba's music is as different from Browne's and Simon's as possible with its sumptious background arrangements, infectious melodies, triv ial lyrics, and perky delivery. Abba does not pretend to be innovative or even artistic in their music; their aim is purely, blatantly commercial success. In spite of this less than noble goal, Abba's music is terrific. Anyone who has heard their hits ''Mamma Mia'' and "Dancing Queen" knows that Abba's music has a contagiously happy sound that is all but irresistable. Abba's latest, simply called ''The Album,'' carries on their tradition elf light, escapist music and it is entertaining in the way an amusement park is entertaining. There's very little intellectual going on-certain ly nothing revolutionary-but the mood is so happy and energetic that it is impossible not to enjoy yourself. Every song on ''The Album'' has a melody so catchy that it lingers in the mind long after the record is over. The lyrics that go with these melodies are, as usual, very slight; such as "There gotta be rock'n rolVTo fill the hole in your soul.'' Much of the music.on "The Album" sounds like Fifties music that has been slicked up and transplanted into the Seventies. "Take a Chance on Me" has a beat like a polka that is occasionally interrupted by one of the singer's cooing "C'mon, gimme a break, baby" the way .

Stockholm and Eurovison Song Contest Two Eurovision entries in 2015 were written during Stockholm Songwriting Camp Macedonia’s ”Autumn Leave’s” was composed and written by Joacim Persson. Azerbaijan’s ”Hour of the Wolf” was written by Nicolas Rebscher, Nicklas Lif and Lina Hansson during the first ever Stockholm Songwriting Camp at Pop House hotel in Stockholm, january 2015. In addition several pop songs met the public ears during the year, including Conchita Wurst’s ”Firestorm” written and produced by Joacim Persson, Sebastian Arman and Aleena Gibson (who was an additional writer not at the camp), and the song ‘Step to my beat’ which the ‘pop dynamo’ Ronika co-wrote at the camp with Nicolas Rebscher. It was also featured in The Guardians pop playlist. Stockholm Songwriting Camp is an initiative that brings together writers and producers from around the world. It is a hub that values the creativity of others and wants to provide a neutral platform for embracing creativity across the songwriting world. What makes the concept different from a lot of camps is the fact that the organizers do not claim any publishing rights, all property is the writers – it is simply the meeting place. The concept was founded by Niclas Molinder owner of Auddly, based in Stockholm.
