The construction of the jail having 698 cells was completed in 1906 as a three-scoreyed edifice with seven wings, each stretching from a Central Tower like the spoke of a wheel. It w.]s designed in sllch a way thac the franc portion of each wing faced [he back side of ocher wing, thus preventing the possibility of any communication between the prisoners. The CellulJr Jail WJS declared a Natioll.ll Memorial in 1979.
