CITY NEWS 8 Town Center – Coming Soon The Plan for the Town Center as a pedestrian-friendly, vibrant, mixed use environment has been a primary focus of the City for several years. After extensive public engagement, City Council approval in 2006, California Coastal Commission approval in 2008, completion of the preliminary infrastructure design in 2010, completion of the environmental approvals in 2011, ongoing negotiation with impacted property owners in 2012 and completion of the Town Center southern gateway in early 2013, it is time to launch into the transformative public improvements that will lay the foundation for the future of the Dana Point Town Center. Now is the time to implement the Town Center Plan. The City Council took action in May to fund the first phase of the PCH/Del Prado Street Improvement Project. This landmark project returns PCH to two-way circulation similar to the up coast and down coast sections of PCH. It provides the public improvements needed to begin realizing the vision provided in the Town Center Plan. This first phase of the work also includes the section of Del Prado between Blue Lantern and Ruby Lantern. The Council and South Coast Water District have jointly developed a phased approach to completing the necessary improvement work in the Town Center; SCWD will be upgrading their underground utilities and the City will be following with construction of the traffic calming and PCH beautification elements. The proposed schedule shows SCWD beginning their construction work in late 2013 and the City beginning work in early 2014. Once work is completed on PCH, SCWD can begin their underground utility work on Del Prado between Ruby Lantern and Golden Lantern. The City will follow with its work on Del Prado, pending identification of funding. A description of the planned improvements can be found on the City’s website at www.danapoint.org/towncenter. A public outreach campaign will begin soon, so be watching for updates on this major improvement project. Through cooperative efforts between the City and SCWD and recognition of the importance of this project, implementation of the visionary Town Center Plan is within reach.
