He had dropped his handkerchief and she set out to return it, only to be told to keep it. Gerard told her she "may need it someday." Years after Gerard's passing, the young girl became married and with child. She unex- pectedly went into labor and was on the verge of losing her baby. She called for Majel- la's handkerchief to be applied to her. Almost immediately, her pain abated and she proceeded to give birth to a healthy child, something very rare during that time. St. Gerard Majella is patron of expectant mothers. St. Joseph Solemnity: March 19 Joseph was a carpenter, a working man. He wasn't rich for when he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb. Despite his humble work and means, Joseph came from a royal lineage. St. Joseph whose was chosen by God our Father to be the foster father of His Son and the most chaste spouse of His Holy Mother Mary and so dutifully and virtuously fulfilled his role in serving God.

    Reflection: 14 Holy Helpers Novena Against Coronavirus March 25th, 2020 by Fr. Emmanuel Subaar My brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation. In addition to the 14 Holy Helpers Novena Against Coronavirus, you can say a decade of the Rosary to have the courage to say “Yes” to God and His plans for you like Mary. I will begin this novena prayer tonight, but days are not restrictive, you can begin any day and time that is convenient for you. I have provided lists of the 14 Holy Saints and the Novena Prayer below. I would like to explain briefly about the 14 Holy Helpers Novena Against Coronavirus. These 14 great saints were patrons and patronesses of various diseases and maladies. During the Black Death in Europe from 1346 to 1349, the faithful turned to their intercession before the throne of God. Some of these saints like St. Blaise still have their feast in the Roman calendar while we have scant information about the lives of others, yet their intercession is powerful against deadly diseases. They are not to be taken to imply personal or moral criticism of those today or in the past who have adopted practices or advocated reforms which are subjected to criticism. In composing these papers we adopt the working assumption that our fellow Catholics act in good will, but that nevertheless a vigorous and well-informed debate is absolutely necessary if those who act in good will are to do so in light of a proper understanding of the issues. All of the Churches recall her memory under this title in their daily Eucharistic prayers, and especially in the annual celebration of Christmas. The Virgin Mary was already venerated as Mother of God when, in 431, the Council of Ephesus acclaimed her Theotokos (God-bearer). As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us. Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved.

    FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS (F.D. AUGUST 8) (As used by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russian, Western Rite Vicariate) A group of saints invoked with special confidence because they have proven themselves efficacious helpers in adversity and difficulties, are known and venerated under the name Fourteen Holy Helpers. Devotion to these fourteen as a group spread in response to the Black Plague which devastated Europe from 1346 to 1349. Among its symptoms were the tongue turning black, a parched throat, violent headache, fever, and boils on the abdomen. It attacked without warning, robbed its victims of reason, and killed within a few hours; many died without the last Sacraments. Brigands roamed the roads, people suspected of contagion were attacked, animals died, people starved, whole villages vanished into the grave, social order and family ties broke down, and the disease appeared incurable. The pious turned to heaven, begging the intervention of the saints, praying to be spared or cured. This group devotion began in Germany. The names of the fourteen Saints varied from place to place, but the primary principle of their selection was the efficacy of their intercession against various diseases—most, but not all, were venerated as Martyrs. Typically named are the following Saints: Achatius (Agathius), Barbara, Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Cyriacus, Dionysius (Denys), Erasmus (Elmo) of Formia, Eustace (Eustathius), George, Giles, Margaret of Antioch, Panteleimon, & Vitus. For one or other of the above were sometimes named Saints Anthony the Great, Leonard, Nicholas, or Sebastian. Sts. Christopher and Giles were invoked against the plague itself.
