Ascension of the Lord. Why is it that we don’t talk much about the Lord’s Ascension into heaven? Perhaps a reason why we don’t talk much about this significant event, in the Lord’s and the life of the Church, is because it’s tricky and somewhat difficult to fully comprehend. But that need not be the case and we should appreciate and try to understand what this feast means to each of us. Each of our Mass readings gives us some insight to understanding what we are celebrating. St. Luke describes the Ascension of Christ by recalling the image of a cloud. Cloud imagery is found throughout the Bible to signify Gods holy presence. When Israel was led out of the desert there was a cloud leading them by day. When Moses ascended Mt. Sinai, God came down in a cloud. In the New Testament we recall the Transfiguration scene when on that mountaintop God spoke from a cloud that His disciples were to listen to Him because He was the Son of God. And now we read that He “was taken up to heaven”, by a cloud. All of this ‘cloud talk’ is to remind us that God’s presence called Jesus back to heaven. Now for a short time, we wait for Pentecost when He send us His Holy Spirit. God is calling each of us to give witness to this great moment, when Christ has entered from earthly glory into the Father’s heavenly glory, where He prepares a place for us and intercedes for us until He comes again. We are encouraged not to try and figure out all the ramifications of the feast but to celebrate Gods coming to reveal His glory to each of us…especially in the Eucharist. FAMILY PROMISE Our Family Promise host week April 28-May 5 went very well. We had 4 families: 7 adults and 6 children. We partnered with our support church, The First Chinese Church of Christ, and gave a birthday party for a 10 year old girl. This was a very special evening for her as she never had a birthday party before. For dinner, we served her favorite foods--steak, roast chicken, teriyaki beef, noodles, potato/mac salad, fried rice. Of course, for dessert, we had a birthday cake, candles, and ice cream plus birthday presents. She screamed with delight as she opened each gift. She said she'd never forget her 10th birthday! Mahalo to parishioners who generously donated gift cards, food, supplies, and precious time and energy spent participating on multiple levels to help our guests feel at home during their stay with us. All our guests felt welcomed and loved because of our warm hospitality. We have been participating in Family Promise for 11 years, and guests consistently say we're "DA BEST"! For the remainder of this year, our host weeks are: · July 7-21 (2 consecutive weeks) · Aug. 25-Sept. 1 · Oct. 20-27 For 2019, we will have hosted a total of 7 weeks, which is 3 more than the usual. Churches are expected to host 4 weeks each year (1 week each quarter), and when they drop out, Family Promise has to scramble to get another church to fill in. So far, we've been able to accommodate their requests. If you would like to help in this important social ministry, please contact Gloria Zane. Bennett Stewardship Corner Lesson 153 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Look Up “Count the stars, if you can.” (Genesis 15:5) Today, most of us look down. We look at our cell phones, our laptops; why look up? Everything we think we need to know is right there in hand. With summer approaching and the nights clear, take your children or grandchildren to the backyard at dusk. Ask them to look to the sky and have them tell you what they see. Planets? Comets? Constellations and stars for sure. Encourage them to wonder about the vastness of the universe and the glory of God’s creation; the realization that we are but a small part of His plan. Perhaps the beauty that we see in the heavens is a glimpse of the glory of Heaven to come. So take time one evening to look up and see His glory, appreciate that in the greatness of the universe He is ever closer to each of us and showering us with His love and blessings. Let’s share them with one another. “You Can’t Out Do God’s Generosity!” Figures were not available when the bulletin went to print. They will be included in the June 9, 2019 Bulletin.
