A great deal of emphasis is placed on purity and its loss, relating nuevo flamenco with the whole history of flamenco and its discourses, as well as tracing its relationship to other musical genres, mainly jazz. While centred on the process of fusion and crossover it also explores through music the characteristics and implications that nuevo flamenco and its discourses have impinged on related issues as Gypsy identity and cultural authenticity.

Se mere i budgettet. Vi glæder

John Sund was born in Copenhagen on the 6th of January 1957. He is a self-taught guitarist and composer. Main debut at age 18 with the Danish Radio Big Band in a work by pianist Thomas Clausen and with Palle Mikkelborg as a conductor. He received the Jacob Gade's Grant as one of the first “rhythmic musicians” (which is normally reserved for classical musicians) for his extraordinary talent and Danish jazz reviewer, Boris Rabinowitsch, described him as a discovery of 'Ørsted Pedersen'ske' dimensions. (NHØP) He has since then appeared and recorded in countless context – including the Danish Radio Jazz Group, Danish Radio Workshop Group / Palle Mikkelborg, Thomas Clausen's groups, Creme Fraiche Big Band,Debbie Cameron, Vincent Nilsson, Lelo Nika, Ben Besiakov, Bo Stief, Tim Hagans, the south Indian musicians Ganesh & Kumaresh, Shashank Subramaniam, Lebanese oud player Bilal Irshed and Kamil Sabri. He has toured most parts of the world. His also has his own working groups: Acoustic Sense (formed 2002), with John Ehde (cello), Ayi Solomon (percussion) and Morten Lundsby (contrabass) and World On A String (formed 2003), with Bjarke Falgren (violin), Ole Theill (tabla) and Morten Lundsby, and the duo Duometric Events (formed 2009) with Ayi Solomon, and as a freelance musician. In addition, he regularly dives into the different projects of a larger scale, such as his present project that involves Acoustic Sense in a collaboration with the Bulgarian inspired choir GLAS. John Sund musical work moves in the borderland between jazz and world music with influences from classical music and is always in a constant search for new expressions and directions.

  • Wait for the Chord: an Interview with Scott Hamilton
Wait for the Chord: An Interview with Scott Hamilton JM: Scott, in all truthfulness, you're one of our most contemporary links to the great heritage of the tenor saxophone and, also, of that whole tradition at the heart of what I call the jazz archive. If you were to think out loud about the way you've carved your own identity in the middle of that tradition, how would you talk about that? SH: Oh, that's tough. I would think that the main thing is, there isn't very much to talk about because, I mean, if anything has happened right for me, it's been sort of organic, you know ... to ignore the idea of style and just work toward the same sort of things that everybody else is working toward. Do you know what I mean? JM: Sure. SH: What are you gonna do? I have to spend most of my time ignoring the fact that I'm playing traditional so that I can concentrate on the things that are important. The language [of traditional jazz] is just something that I fell into. I'm happy I did. I'm comfortable with it, and I wouldn't be comfortable boundary 2 22:2, 1995. Just as Brad Mehldau today has become the dominant 20.00 (8pm) influence on other jazz pianists, the same is true of Kurt Rosenwinkel as a guitarist who DKK 295 has countless imitators around the world. To understand the genesis of his world wide influence you can trace the story back to the beginning of the 90ties, where jazz legend WEDNESDAY Gary Burton (repeating what he did for Pat Metheny) invites Kurt Rosenwinkel to join his band even before Kurt finished his studies at Berklee College of Music. Subsequently Kurt Nov 03 also becomes part of Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop band and Joe Henderson’s band, but 20.00 (8pm) perhaps more importantly he is one of the central forces (along with Brad Mehldau, Mark DKK 295 Turner etc) in a jazz revolution that takes place in the New York City club called Small’s in the late 90ties. Kurt Rosenwinkel’s influence ranges wider than just the guitar, as he is also known as one of the greatest composers in jazz today.

  • Five Performance Etudes for Jazz Piano
FIVE PERFORMANCE ETUDES FOR JAZZ PIANO ADREAN FARRUGIA A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO OCTOBER 2020 © ADREAN FARRUGIA, 2020 Abstract There are currently numerous texts and publications which outline the fundamental concepts which are relevant to the study and performance of jazz piano. However, there is a smaller body of work that clearly demonstrates the practical real-world application of these fundamental concepts. This thesis presents a collection of five performance etudes for jazz piano which encompass a number of concepts and approaches which are fundamental to the study of jazz piano, while also, as performance relevant pieces, illustrate the practical application of these approaches and concepts. The relevance of the concepts and approaches covered is justified by providing examples of their use on recordings by historically significant pianists. These Five Performance Etudes for Jazz Piano are based of the practical application of relevant styles and concepts spanning the 1940s to the 1960s – the period of jazz which cultivated the greatest number of musical tools still used today. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Professors Al Henderson and Sundar Viswanathan for their guidance and assistance during the process of creating this thesis. In particular, the guidance of my primary advisor Al Henderson was greatly appreciated -- his willingness to be of assistance and his insights during the process went far beyond the basic requirements of his role. I would also like to acknowledge professors Barry Elmes, Jay Rahn, and Michael Coghlan, with whom I fulfilled the course requirements of this degree.
