THE EPISTLE (For Fourth Sunday after Pentecost) Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Clap your hands all ye peoples. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans. (6:18-23) Brethren, having been set free from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. For, the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. THE GOSPEL (For the Fourth Sunday of Matthew) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (8:5-13) At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching Him and say- ing, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Is- rael have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment. The traditional fasting disci- pline (NO Meat, Poultry, Eggs, Dairy, Fish, Wine and Olive Oil) is observed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with katalysis for fish, wine and olive oil on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. THE SYNAXARION (Commemoration) On June 28 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate the recovery of the precious relics of the Holy and wonderworking Unmercenaries Cyrus and John. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, prayed fervently to God to destroy the idolatrous impurity in the town of Menuthis where a pagan temple was located and where the power of the demons ruled. An angel of God appeared to the Patriarch and told him that Menuthis would be cleansed of its impurity if he translated the relics of Saints Cyrus and John from Canopus to that town. The Patriarch did this immediately and built a Church there in their honor. Ammonius, the son of Julian the mayor of Alexandria, was healed of scrofula; a Theodore was healed of blindness; the wife of Theodore from poison- ing, a Eugenia of dropsy as well as many other people were healed of various diseases and torments by the relics of these saints. This all occurred in 412. On this day, we also commemorate the Holy Martyr Papios; Paul the Physician of Corinth; Venerable Moses the anchorite; and Venerable Sergios and Herman, wonder- working abbots of Valaam. Patriarchs Meet in Syria, Issue Call for Peace L to R: Patriarchs Gregorios III, Ignatius Aphrem II, John X, Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi, Ignatius Joseph III On Monday, June 8, 2015, the five Patriarchs of the Churches of Antioch met in a summit in Damascus to dis- cuss the plight of Christians in the Middle East. "We are authentic (people) of this land, deeply rooted in its earth that was watered by the sweat of our fathers and grandfathers, and we confirm more than ever that we are staying," noted the statement released following the meeting, which was reported in several news outlets including Reuters and Ecumenical News. His Beatitude John X, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, was in attendance, as was Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syriac Orthodox Church, Gregorios III of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church,, and Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi of the Maronite Church. The Vatican Ambassador to Syria, Archbishop Mario Zenari, also participated. The Patri- archs called for "a culture of openness, peace and freedom of belief" in the region, and urged the international community to seek the political solutions that will lead to such conditions. .

    PATRIARCHAL VISIT TO ST. MARY’S JACOBITE SYRIAC ORTHODOX CHURCH LOS ANGELES The Prince Patriarch of Antioch and all the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II visited Los Angeles from July 2 to July 8, 2014. By the immense grace of God, St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church in Los Angeles was blessed with an opportunity to host the High Priest during the Pontifical visit. Arrival The Patriarch arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport on July 2nd at 4:30pm. Mor Clemis Kaplan, Mor Theethos Yeldho, priests, deacons and an enthusiastic group of faithful greeted the hierarch, on his arrival. His Holiness then headed to St. Ephrem Syriac Orthodox Cathedral in Burbank, where the Archdiocese of Western USA gave him a formal welcome. St. Mary's On July 5th, 2014, His Holiness celebrated the Holy Qurbono at St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. This was the first Liturgy celebrated by His Holiness in the USA after his installation as Patriarch. It was also the Patriarch’s first visit to a Malankara parish after assuming office. The Archbishop of the Malankara Archdiocese in North America Mor Theethos Yeldho, the Vicar Fr. Sabu Thomas Corepiscopos, priests, deacons and the faithful accorded His Holiness a ceremonious red carpet welcome to St Mary’s. The premises of the church were decorated to reflect upon the rich heritage of the Syriac Orthodox Church. The Patriarch was assisted by the bishops Mor Clemis Kaplan - Archbishop of the Western USA, Mor Yacoub Eduardo - Archbishop of Central America and Mor Theethos Yeldho during the Holy Qurbono.

He is risen indeed! On April 22, 2013, same as today, our brothers the Bishops of Aleppo, Metropolitans Paul Yazigi and John Ibrahim, were kidnapped. To this day, their case, a real picture rather than a glimpse of the tragedy lived by the people of this East, remains the scar left by lies in the cheek of truth. Indeed, truth has been slaughtered by deception. Today we remember these two brothers and fathers, whose kidnapping represents the strangest of cases that have ever violated the essence of humanity. It seems that, in our world, humans could mean to some people a most trivial object of trade. We remember today our two brothers and fathers who were kidnapped while re- turning from a humanitarian mission. We recall those two brothers and fathers who have always been a symbol of the Christian presence in the East. Many voices still like to applause the importance of this presence, but the truth is much different. We remember all this with a broken heart that has not been mended by time and a period of eight years, nor will be. We set this issue before the local and international public opinion. We bring it forth to remind every- one that we have been knocking on every door from diplomatic to security, to political, social, and other paths.

    Mideast patriarch: Unify efforts against extremism, terrorism BEIRUT (CNS) — At a gathering of Middle East leaders coinciding with the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Syriac Orthodox patriarch emphasized the need to unify efforts against extremism and terrorism. “A hundred years after the genocide during the Ottoman Empire and major displacements,” Christians in the region are still facing similar circumstances, said Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of Antioch. “Many of our churches have been destroyed and hundreds of thousands of our Christian brothers have been forced to migrate from the land of their fathers,” Patriarch Aphrem said. “To whose benefit is it if the region is emptied of Christians?” He opened the Jan. 22-23 executive committee meeting of the Middle East Council of Churches, which he hosted at the patriarchal residence in Atchaneh, Lebanon. Members of the executive committee attending the meeting included Iraqi Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, patriarch of Chaldean Catholics; the Rev. Habib Badr, senior pastor of the National Evangelical Church of Beirut; and Souraya Bechealany, acting secretary-general of Middle East Council of Churches; as well as bishops and representatives from Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant churches in the Middle East. Patriarch Aphrem called for regular meetings, at both the spiritual and political levels, to unify efforts against extremism and terrorism, as well as “to promote the principles of coexistence, human values, religious freedom and the spiritual and social values that exist.” “We know that our future is the future of living together with our Muslim brothers,” the patriarch said, adding that “if we want to have a secure future,” all must work together.

The strong historic role of the Catholic Church in Austria's political landscape provides the central framework to understand the “story of success” regarding relations with both the Catholic Church and state authorities in Austria. Summarizing the history of migration and establishment of diaspora churches in Austria, the article explores the impact of the support of the Catholic Church in the process of institutionalization. In addition, state recognition and examples of church- state interaction are highlighted. The findings support the conclusion that minority churches from the Oriental Orthodox tradition have benefitted strongly from their relations with the majority church and the state. However, their authority in both religious and political contexts also affects personal leadership and internal affiliations which can lead to divisions within the church communities. Wars and conflicts surround uS, especially in the land of our forefathers, but we have hope that our Lord will save us and deliver us from our enemies who seek to lead us astray. We beseech the Lord to grant you good health and to bless your ministry. We pray for peace in our countries and seek God's mercy on all who need it. May the Child of the manger give joy and happiness to all human beings and strengthen us to preach His gospel of good tidings in the entire world.     Ecumenical news / Aktuelles Some Preliminary Remarks on the World Council of Churches’ Central Committee Statement on Religion and Violence DANIEL BUDA* Introduction The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC CC) gathered from 22nd to 28th June 2016 in Trondheim, Norway, issued a Statement on Religion and Violence. The purpose of these brief preliminary remarks is to provide potential readers with background and bibliographical information and some personal comments on the text of the statement. All quotations of the statement in this article are taken from the text which is published after these preliminary remarks. Two recent examples of religiously based violence Using as motto the biblical text of James 3:18, the statement acknowl- edges as a matter of deep concern the grow and spread of violence in today`s world and the “ambiguous” connection of violence with religion. Two very recent examples of such type of violence are offered in the statement: the attack on His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II Karim of the Syrian Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East from 19th June 2016 and the so- called “Orlando nightclub shooting” from 12th June 2016. Just a few days before the WCC CC meeting started – and when in Trondheim the Executive Committee of WCC was meeting – the all world heard the shocking news that a suicide bomber targeted an event taking place in al-Wusta district of Qamishli, Syria, where several Christians leaded by His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II Karim, Supreme Head of the Syrian Orthodox Church, were commemorating the Centenary of Assyrian Geno- cide.1 The attacker detonated the bomb at the entering of the venue, as secu- * Daniel Buda, Rev.
