Autobiographies: Psychoanalysis and the Graphic Novel
AUTOBIOGRAPHIES: PSYCHOANALYSIS AND THE GRAPHIC NOVEL PARASKEVI LYKOU PHD THE UNIVERSITY OF YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND RELATED LITERATURE JANUARY 2014 ABSTRACT This thesis explores the conjunction of the graphic novel with life- writing using psychoanalytic concepts, primarily Freudian and post- Freudian psychoanalysis, to show how the graphic medium is used to produce a narrative which reconstructs the function of the unconscious through language. The visual language is rich in meaning, with high representational potential which results in a vivid representation of the unconscious, a more or less raw depiction of the function of the psychoanalytic principles. In this project I research how life-writing utilises the unique representational features of the medium to uncover dimensions of the internal-self, the unconscious and the psyche. I use the tools and principles of psychoanalysis as this has been formed from Freud on and through the modern era, to propose that the visual language of the graphic medium renders the unconscious more accessible presenting the unconscious functionality in a uniquely transparent way, so that to some extent we can see parts of the process of the construction of self identity. The key texts comprise a sample of internationally published, contemporary autobiographical and biographical accounts presented in the form of the graphic novel. The major criterion for including each of the novels in my thesis is that they all are, in one way or another, stories of growing up stigmatised by a significant trauma, caused by the immediate familial and/or social environment. Thus they all are examples of individuals incorporating the trauma in order to overcome it, and all are narrations of constructing a personal identity through and because of this procedure. -

Horace § 1. The Noumenal Character of Lust and Unlust The feeling of Lust and Unlust occupies a prominent position in both Critique of Practical Reason and Critique of Judgment as well as in Kant’s lectures and writings on metaphysics and anthropology. But what is it that stands as Object of this idea? The idea of Lust und Unlust is central to both the practical and judicial Standpoints. But it is also one of the least well explained ideas in Kant’s writings. This is not only because Lust and Unlust taken together as disjunction in a single Object (Lust per se) is a noumenon but also because it belongs to the metaphysics of Kantian anthropology, which Kant left as a task for future generations to work out. We have described Lust as “a kind of motivated wanting.” Clearly this is not sufficient. The exposition of Lust and Unlust requires more detail than this, and this detail we must uncover carefully bit by bit. We must begin by clearly understanding the implications of dealing with an Object that is a pure noumenon. Kant remarks: Now one calls the capability to have Lust or Unlust during a representation feeling for this reason: because both contain the merely subjective in the relationship of our representation and contain absolutely no reference to an Object for the possible cognition of the same (not even the cognition of our state) . -

At 6:00 AM on July 7, with a ceremonial parade of the library’s earliest accessions, the two-month project of moving the books commenced. Leading the trail of librarians was the head librarian, Andrew Keogh, and the head of the serials cataloguing department, Grace Pierpont Fuller. Fuller was the descendant of James Pierpont, one of the principal founders of Yale, and was carrying the Latin Bible given by her ancestor during the fabled 1701 donation of books that signaled the foundation of the Collegiate School. -

Article 2 Understanding Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Effective Case Conceptualization Using the Temporal/Contextual Model Matthew Snyder and Lynn Zubernis Snyder, Matthew, is an associate professor and Chair of the Department of Counselor Education at West Chester University of Pennsylvania and a licensed professional counselor. He teaches courses in Student Affairs, Helping Relationship, Group Counseling, and Theories and Techniques of Counseling. His research interests include the case conceptualization process, the pedagogy of counseling practice, working with resistant clients, and counseling issues in higher education and college retention. Zubernis, Lynn, is an associate professor and Program Chair of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at West Chester University and a licensed clinical psychologist. She teaches courses in Counseling Fundamentals, Group Dynamics, Human Development, and Theories of Counseling, and supervises practicum and internship students. Her research interests include case conceptualization, working with diverse populations, counseling issues in college transfer students, and the psychology of being a fan. Abstract This article examines generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) using a new holistic case conceptualization model, the Temporal/Contextual Model, which was first presented in the authors’ book, Case Conceptualization and Effective Interventions for Counselors. Clients with GAD can present a challenge for counselors because of their deeply ingrained belief systems, the pervasiveness of the anxiety symptoms, and problems with emotional regulation, which may be long-standing. Having a thorough understanding of both the symptoms of the disorder and the environmental factors contributing to the development and maintenance of the disorder are critical for gaining an understanding of the client’s problems, establishing a strong therapeutic alliance, and helping the client confront and begin to recover from a disorder that impacts many aspects of the client’s life. -
Town, Gown, and the Great Depression: Yale and New Haven During the Construction of Yale’S Original Residential Colleges
DAVID MCCULLOUGH TOWN, GOWN, AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION: YALE AND NEW HAVEN DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF YALE’S ORIGINAL RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES In 1930, New Haven had nearly all the hallmarks of a city devastated by the Great De- pression: thousands of hungry young children, unemployed parents wandering the streets looking for work, businesses shuttered. Meanwhile, the slice of the city that was Yale seemed impervious to the effects of the economic crisis. Throughout the Great Depression, the University hungrily bought up land and erected massive new buildings, including the eight which would come to serve as its first residential colleges. In the fol- lowing pages, David McCullough III ’17 explores this historical juxtaposition, tracing the simmering tensions which erupted between town and gown in this fraught time. Next door, a string of Ford Model As sat along the curb beneath the grandiose sign and overhang of the Schubert Theater. Behind locked doors, the theater began to bustle in preparation for the evening’s performance. The steeples of the Trinity Episcopal, Center, and United Churches poked above the tree line, three abreast along Temple Street. And throughout the bustling Green, rows of elms took on their autumnal yellows and reds. Through Church, Elm, and Chapel Streets, trolleys glided by whirring automobiles and rattling carts full of every good imaginable. -
