The game will be made up tonight as part of a double header. Both games are scheduled for seven innings. GOLDEYES DROP DOUBLE HEADER TO MILKMEN: The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost both ends of a double header to the Milwaukee Milkmen at The Ballpark at Jackson on Saturday, losing the opener 9-2 and the nightcap 6-3 in 11 innings. In game one, the Milkmen took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run from David Washington. Washington added an RBI single in the top of the third, and the Milkmen opened an 8-0 advantage, scoring four two-out runs in the top of the fourth. Winnipeg got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a Tyler Hill groundout. Adam Brett Walker re- extended the lead to 9-1 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. Raul Navarro hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to provide the game’s final margin. Joey Gonzalez started and took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings. Gonzalez walked one and struck out three. In game two, Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run home run from Walker and an two-out, RBI single from Aaron Hill. Down to their final four outs of the scheduled seven-inning game, Winnipeg rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score. Logan Hill doubled home a run, and later scored from third as part of a double steal. Dakota Conners’ RBI single made it 3-3. Cory Thompson then pitched 4.0 shutout innings in relief before Milwaukee rallied for three runs in the top of the 11 th to take the lead. Mike Webb started and made his professional debut, allowing three earned runs in 6.0 innings in a no-decision. Webb walked none and struck out six. Ken Frosch took the loss in relief. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE COUGARS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 2-1 all-time against the Kane County Cougars, including an 0-0 record in home games, and an 0-0 record at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Cougars joined in the American Association in 2021 after playing in the Low-A Midwest League from their inaugural season in 1991 through 2019. The Cougars did not play in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kane County served as an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles (1991-92), Florida Marlins (1993-2002), Oakland Athletics (2003-10), Kansas City Royals (2011-12), Chicago Cubs (2013-14), and most recently the Arizona Diamondbacks (2015-20). The Cougars won the Midwest League championship in 2001 and 2014, and nearly 200 of their former players reached or are currently playing in the Major Leagues. Kane County’s alumni list includes MLB All-Stars Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, and Andre Ethier. Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney pitched for the Cougars during their second season in 1992, finishing with a 2.48 ERA in 123.1 innings pitched. Goldeyes’ infielder Wes Darvill played briefly for Kane County in 2013. Former longtime St. Paul Saints’ manager George Tsamis was hired to pilot the Cougars during their first season in the American Association. Tsamis is one of only five managers in independent baseball history to amass 1,000-plus wins. Tsamis has guided independent clubs to four championships, most recently with the Saints in 2019. Former Saints’ hitting coach Ole Sheldon and pitching coach Kerry Ligtenberg join the Cougars in the same roles under Tsamis. The Cougars play at Northwestern Medicine Field, which has welcomed more than 11 million fans since opening in 1991. The ballpark is located in Geneva, Illinois, which is 35 miles due west of downtown Chicago. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 5-12, in sixth place in the American Association North Division, and 6.0 games behind the Chicago Dogs and Milwaukee Milkmen. The Goldeyes were just swept in a three-game series by the Milkmen at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Goldeyes are seventh in the American Association in hitting (.254), 11 th in pitching (6.72), and fourth in fielding (.980). The Kane County Cougars are 9-9, in fifth place in the North, and 2.5 games behind the Dogs and Milkmen. The Cougars just lost two of three to the RedHawks at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Cougars are ninth in the league in batting (.249), fourth in pitching (4.14), and 10 th in defence (.973). This is the second of four head-to-head series this season between the Goldeyes and the Cougars. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: In game one, the Goldeyes go 6/10 vs. KCC: RHP Joey Gonzalez (1-2, 8.55) vs. TBA with right-hander Jorge Gonzalez who is 0-2 with a 6.91 6/11 vs. SF: TBA vs. TBA ERA in three starts this season. Gonzalez took the loss at 6/12 vs. SF: TBA vs. TBA Chicago in game one of a double header last Wednesday, 6/13 vs. SF: TBA vs. TBA allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. Gonzalez walked three and struck out two. Prior to this season, Gonzalez last pitched in 2019 as a true rookie for the Pacific Association’s San Rafael Pacifics. Gonzalez was 0-0 with a 3.75 ERA in one start and six relief appearances, striking out 19 batters in just 12.0 innings, and helped the Pacifics win the Pacific Association championship. Gonzalez pitched collegiately at Texas A&M University, International where he was 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA in two starts and 17 relief appearances over 43.0 innings for the Dustdevils in 2017. Gonzalez is in his second season of professional baseball, and is 0-2 lifetime with a 5.47 ERA in 10 games, four of them as a starting pitcher. Tonight will be Gonzalez’s first career appearance against Kane County. Gonzalez is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one career start at The Ballpark at Jackson. In game two, the Goldeyes go with right-hander Eduard Reyes who is 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in four starts this season. Reyes took the loss vs. Milwaukee last Friday, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Reyes walked four and struck out two. Reyes won the pitching triple crown for the All-American Baseball Challenge’s New Jersey Jackals in 2020, going 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched. Reyes was 9-4 for the Can-Am League’s New Jersey Jackals in 2019 where he ranked tied for fourth in the league in wins, eighth in ERA (3.71), 11 th in strikeouts (88), and ninth in innings pitched (106.2). Reyes helped the Jackals win the 2019 Can-Am League championship, which proved to be the final championship in league history before the circuit merged with the Frontier League that off-season. Reyes signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as an international free agent in 2010. Reyes is in his seventh season of professional baseball, and is 23-20 lifetime with a 3.70 ERA in 73 games, 54 of them as a starting pitcher. Reyes has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 31 of 47 career starts (excludes 2020 season). Reyes is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in one career start against Kane County. Reyes is 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA in two career starts at The Ballpark at Jackson. In the opener, the Cougars go with left-hander Josh Tols who is 1-0 with a 3.13 ERA in four starts this season. Tols took a no-decision vs. Fargo- Moorhead last Friday, allowing two earned runs on six hits in 7.1 innings. Tols walked one and struck out two. The RedHawks won the game 5-3. Prior to this season, Tols last pitched in 2019 where he spent time at two levels in the Philadelphia Phillies’ organization. Tols was a combined 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in 26 relief appearances for the Triple-A International League’s Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Double-A Eastern League’s Reading Fightin Phils. Tols began his professional career with the Pecos League’s Trinidad Triggers in 2014 before spending two seasons with the Kansas City T-Bones. The Goldeyes signed Tols in the winter of 2018 before his contract was purchased by the Phillies. Tols is in his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 16-6 lifetime with one save and a 3.88 ERA in 125 games, 20 of them as a starting pitcher. A native of Adelaide, Australia, Tols also has eight seasons of experience in the Australian Baseball League where he has a career 25-11 record, 2.69 ERA, and 253 strikeouts in 207.2 innings.
