The Role of Religion in Alexis De Tocqueville's ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE’S DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA Primrose Pratt Tishman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Charles E. Butterworth Department of Government and Politics This study explores the influence of Montesquieu, Rousseau and Pascal on Tocqueville’s religious teaching to show that it has two components: (a) to provide for order in the disordered democratic state and (b) to satisfy a primordial human need for the eternal. The analysis follows Tocqueville’s own method of contrast and analogy to show how the harmonious combination of the teaching of the enlightenment with religion in America on the one hand and their discordant linking in France on the other produced opposite consequences for liberty. The study examines why Tocqueville insists that the mutual dependence of religion and liberty is more necessary in democracy than in aristocracy. Second, it demonstrates how Montesquieu’s teaching helps Tocqueville to explain the American religious phenomenon, which combines an equal fervor for material well-being with systematic piety. Third, it explores how Tocqueville modifies Rousseau’s teaching on opinion to promote religion as the appropriate source of moral authority in democracy. Fourth, it uncovers how Tocqueville combines selected elements of Rousseau’s natural religion with Montesquieu’s concept of virtue as enlightened interest and the moralistic language of Pascal to encourage religious habits that conform to the inclinations of the democratic intellect and sentiment. Finally, it explores how Tocqueville’s teaching can help thoughtful Americans deliberate about the moral issues that confront the U.S. today. Tocqueville’s teaching draws attention to the precarious position of liberty in egalitarian societies where the instinct for individual independence causes human beings to become amoral and apolitical. Equality induces them to become totally absorbed with the pursuit of material well-being and thus to direct all personal intellectual resources toward that goal, making common opinion the sole guide of reason in all other matters. Moreover, since laws usually reflect changing opinions Tocqueville affirms that religion -- the only fixed point around which human beings can orient themselves—must be used to sustain liberty by making it the foundation of public opinion. they are Pascal, Montesquieu and Rousseau.”1 These daily tête à têtes with men of disparate views on religion are undertaken by Tocqueville evidently for the purpose of finding an intersection of ethical ideas capable of providing a moral anchor to man to meet the challenges he faces in modern democracy.2 This study also argues that Tocqueville’s aristocratic and Catholic education plays a role in his penetrating understanding of the important place he insists religion ought to occupy in democratic society. However, it places greater emphasis on disentangling the intellectual influence of Pascal, Rousseau and Montesquieu on Tocqueville’s religious teaching. The lessons Tocqueville learns from them about the human condition, human nature and the generative principles of political regimes respectively provide an essential backdrop for understanding the nuances in his teaching on religion and morality. A review of the scholarly literature interpreting Tocqueville’s works reveals that most scholars, including inter alia, Jean-Claude Lamberti, Marvin

Glass Department of Government and Politics Drawing on the work of Tocqueville, Nietzsche, Camus, and Marcuse, this work argues that there is an urgent political and societal need for greater support of public art projects and better access to these sources of funding. More art in public spaces would revive and animate communal environments, create new relationships between the individual and the public, strengthen feelings of community, and foster the desire to participate in the public. All art creates participatory desire and behavior, but visionary art is how political progress through individual rebellion can be best accessed and articulated. This work defines visionary artistic creation as the union of instinctual creative energies and rational reflection. Mainstream art, despite its aesthetic rearrangements, fails to connect the viewer with questions that will engage them over time.     BOOK REVIEWS The Jefferson Image in the American Mind. By MERRILL D. PETERSON. (New York: Oxford University Press, i960, x, 548 p. Bibliography, index. $8.50.) Some future historian of American historical writing, looking over the work of the 1950's for dominant trends, will undoubtedly devote a chapter to the vogue of the historical ghost-story. Historians in this period, he will point out, seemed less concerned with the "real" Franklin, Washington, Jackson, or Lincoln than with the "American image" of Franklin, the Washington "legend," the Jackson "symbol," the "cult" of Lincoln. Not only the figures who populate the historical landscape but the landscape itself became ghostly: historians dealt not so much with the facts of west- ward expansion or the actual significance of the frontier, for example, as with the West as "symbol and myth." The concept of "symbol" or "myth" became indeed the password, the "Open sesame," of historical interpreta- tion. Our historiographer will unquestionably single out Henry Nash Smith's Virgin Land (1950) as the herald of the new school, though he will have to seek its remoter intellectual origins in the writings of the philoso- phers, sociologists, and literary critics who first shaped the concept and handed it to the historians. Perhaps he will see this preoccupation with "ghosts" as a revelation of something deep in the mid-century American psyche. Professor Peterson of Brandeis, the latest practitioner of this method, has a well-developed rationale for it. Every society, he affirms, following A. N. Whitehead, "needs a sense of continuity with its history, a set of commonly diffused symbols rooted out of the past to manifest its modes of action and evoke its ideals." Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture questioned a series of assumptions about Americans’ relationship with guns by examining a wide array of evidence across three centuries. The book came under sustained assault nearly a year before its appearance. Along the way a num- ber of accusations were made against the book’s scholarship and its author. Most of these accu- sations focus on the three paragraphs and one table dealing with probate records, though other charges emerged, primarily on the web. As the author of Arming America, I would rather not engage in the highly political and personal tone of these attacks which often say more about the critic than about the content of the book.

    THE AGE OF EGALITARIANISM: THE PENNY PRESS seeking only their own ends was threatening the bonds of CHAPTER 1 community. His growing disaffection led him to attack Amer- ican newspapers. He did so in an extended series of libel suits; in his characterization of a newspaper editor, the disgusting Steadfast Dodge who appeared in Homeward Bound (1838) THE REVOLUTION IN and Home As Found (1838); and in The American Democrat (1838), a short work of political criticism. In that work he AMERICAN JOURNALISM IN wrote: If newspapers are useful in overthrowing tyrants, it is only to THE AGE OF establish a tyranny of their own. The press tyrannizes over publick men, letters, the arts, the stage, and even over private life. Under the EGALITARIANISM: pretence of protecting publick morals, it is corrupting them to the core, and under the semblance of maintaining liberty, it is gradually establi;hing a despotism as ruthleu, as grasping, and one that is THE PENNY PRESS quite as vulgar as that of any christian state known. With loud professions of freedom of opinion, there is no tolerance; with a parade.of patriotism, no sacrifice of interests; and with fulsome panegyrics on propriety, too frequently, no decency.'
