GB 1923 Jenyns Corresp Bath Royal Lit and Scientific Institution This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project NRA 41808 The National Archives Searchers should note that the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution refer to Leonard Blomefield by the name he used until 1871, i.e. Leonard Jenyns. BATH ROYAL LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTION THE JENYNS CORRESPONDENCE The four volumes of correspondence addressed to Leonard Jenyns between 1826 and 1878 consist of nearly 700 letters, from more than 200 correspondents. They have been transcribed using the TASWORD word processing program, and saved on floppy disks, as well as being printed. INDEXING AND NUMBERING The originals were arranged and indexed by Jenyns in two volumes of large (quarto) pages, and two of small (octavo). Within each set of two volumes, he arranged the writers generally by the date of their first letter, and gave each a number: he then gave each letter a consecutive number. However, the numbering is complicated by the division into two sizes, and by the assembling of some letters by subject rather than by writer. Thus William Yarrell appears as correspondent 22 in the first quarto volume (letters 22(1) to 22(45)), and as correspondent 14 in the first octavo volume (letters 14(1) to 14(15)), but there are also two letters from him (numbered 34(2) and 34(22)) in the group relating to Jenyns' book Observations in Natural History', and one (numbered 35(5)) in the group relating to "The Naturalist's Almanac'. The transcribed letters are filed in the order in which they appear in the original volumes. As Jenyns' numbering for each two-volume set (of quarto and of octavo letters) begins with correspondent No.l, we have indicated the size of the letter by "Q" or "8vo" in the top left-hand corner of the first page of each letter. Each volume of letters has been saved on a separate floppy disk (in ASCII format), each letter as a separate file with a number allocated in the order they were transcribed - generally the order they appear in the original, but with some exceptions. The file names consist of a volume number 1 to 4 (the two octavo volumes being treated as volumes 3 and 4), and a consecutive number within each volume; thus the seventy-second letter transcribed from the first octavo volume has the file name 'let3072'. Jenyns' number appears at the head of each letter, and the computer file name at the bottom of each page. A few letters have been found elsewhere - for instance, inserted in books in the Jenyns library, and they have been treated as a miscellaneous fifth volume, and filed at the end of volume 4. The correspondents (with Jenyns' note on their identity), the date, original number, and computer file name for each letter, have been recorded on a database, from which cross-indexes have been printed, including one which groups letters from all four volumes under the writer's name. This has been filed following these notes, as applying to the whole correspondence. Indexes for each volume are given at the beginning of each volume of transcriptions. EDITORIAL POLICY The general intention has been to make the transcriptions readable rather than scholarly - we have not undertaken to check all scientific terms. ABBREVIATIONS Abbreviations have been left as written except for "&" and "&c", which are shown as "and" and "etc.". SPELLING AND ACCENTS Most obvious mis-spellings on the part of the writers have been indicated by "[sic]", but some are so common that we assume they were acceptable at the time of writing - a very common example is "Your's". Other spellings which are now archaic have been retained: e.g. expence, favor. The correspondents writing in French frequently omitted accents, or used incorrect ones by present-day standards.- we have inserted or corrected some of the most obvious ones to make the letters more readable, but have not used "[sic]" in the other cases. LISTS OF LATIN NAMES Some long lists of desiderata have been photocopied where the handwriting made transcription particularly difficult without specialist knowledge. TRANSLATIONS One letter in Latin and several in French have been translated, and both versions are given. We hope our version of these letters will be of sufficient interest and quality to facilitate reference to the originals, particularly for experts in any of Leonard Jenyns' fields of interest.
