Longmont Astronomical Society Newsletter LAS Meeting May 17 - SkySafari - Past, Present and Future by Bill Tschumy SkySafari is the most popular mobile astronomy app among amateur astronomers. Hear one of the creators, Bill Tschumy, tell you about the app’s history, current status and where it is headed in the future. Bio: Bill has been an avid amateur astronomer for the past 45 years and a software engineer for 37. Eight years ago he was fortunate to be able to combine his programming skills and love of astronomy to help create astronomy software for iOS, Android and Mac. Bill co-wrote the award winning SkySafari, StarSeek, Stella Access, Pluto Safari, Eclipse Safari, and Satellite Safari. He has also co-written SkyWeek, Jupiter's Moons and Saturn's Moon which are currently marketed by Sky & Telescope. The meeting will be at the IHOP Restaurant, 2040 Ken Pratt Boulevard, Longmont, Please join us for for coffee, dinner or just desert around 6 pm; The general meeting and presentation will begin at 7 pm. Presentation “Meet the Herschels an Evening with William and Lena” by Vern Raben It was in the 22nd year of her life that Caroline Hershel truly began to live... even if 'living' started with being quite literally dumped onto the shore of her new homeland. In abject discomfort, bone cold and seeming privation, she embarked upon a life's journey that would bring her recognition and praise from the halls of science as never before granted a woman of the Western world. Caroline Herschel was born on March 16, 1750, in what is today Hanover, Germany. She was one of 6 surviving children of Isaac Hershel, an oboeist and trained military musician, and Ann Ilse Hershel. Caroline was about 12 years younger than her brother William, famed astronomer and father of the eminent British scientist and naturalist, Sir John Herschel. Caroline's father pressed general education, and especially musicianship, knowing this could provide his children (especially his sons) with a commoner's trade gentler than most, and as importantly, musicians of day had access to people of means and position far above their own status. Longmont Astronomical Society Page 6 Caroline's mother held no such view of her daughter... having been stricken with typhus at age 10, Caroline was only 4 ft 3, she had lost some vision in her left eye, and also carried facial scars from smallpox. Never expecting such a figure to marry, Caroline's mother used her as a household servant... up to the point of preventing Caroline from learning any skill that could have provided her with paid employment outside the home. Evidence of her father's foresight, all four of Caroline's brothers had spent time in England, with William and Alexander living near Bath enjoying relative prosperity as paid musicians to the English upper class. Knowing of Caroline's misery, and knowing their mother, William determined to rescue her under pretense of needing her voice in England to 'join the band'... an argument they only won by agreeing to fund a servant who would replace Caroline and her labors. As she followed William to Bath, she also followed him into his musical career... he addressed her musical and general education beginning immediately, all the while he was performing in churches and in other paid engagements. Indeed, Caroline sang first vocalist of Handel's Messiah in April of 1778 but as William's interests in astronomy grew, his interests in music waned, as did his time for rehearsals with Caroline... refusing to sing for anyone but William, her musical career declined only as it was just beginning... and their collective shift to Astronomy in the late 1770s / early 1780s was made only because that is where William's interests lay - Caroline was grudgingly forced into astronomy work that made her famous. She assisted her brother in almost every facet of his foray into astronomy... from mirror polishing to observational recording and position calculation, catalog updates, and then to her own independent observations over periods of many, many years. In 1786 Caroline discovered her first comet but this was a comet of omen - her beloved William married at the age of 50... Caroline had been working for him for almost 20 years and was very upset by the physical (Caroline moved to a different house) and emotional separation William's marriage caused. Caroline stopped writing, or destroyed, her memoirs from 1788 to 1798, but her astronomical observations and catalog work continued unabated. Caroline's brother William died in 1822 and grief stricken, Caroline returned to Hanover, Germany where she lived out her days continuing catalog work and assisting her nephew John, passing peacefully on 9 January 1848. She is buried in Hanover, next to her parents and with a lock of William's hair. Caroline Herschel was: first woman to receive a salary for her scientific work (at a time when few male scientists were paid) First woman awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1828) Copyright © May 2018. Longmont Astronomical Society Page 7 Named an Honorary Member of the Royal Astronomical Society 1835 (with Mary Somerville) named an Honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy (1838) received the Gold Medal for Science from the King of Prussia on the occasion of her 96th birthday (1846) an easily be considered the author of the New General Catalog (NGC) still in use today. At first blush, it is seems Caroline had left family servitude for other forms of it - first to a foreign land, to her brother's musical career, and then his singular interest in astronomy... Caroline followed William but at the same time found herself, and in her eventual love of Astronomy, her own life's true calling.

The money will be used to purchase a projector and a laptop computer. With this equipment we will be able to give presentations at the observatory during public star parties and anywhere we are hosting a group interested in Astronomy. Our outreach will definitely be enhanced by this grant. The Messier Marathon is March 24 th , next Saturday, at TUVA. Be sure and read the article describing the marathon below and remember you do not have to stay all night. My first year I only made it until about 1:00 AM. You can also bring a cot to set up in the clubhouse and get some sleep. The marathon is definitely a challenge but the camaraderie is what really makes it worthwhile. Open Positions: We have two open positions I would like everyone to consider. The Group Director and the Newsletter Editor. Teresa and Jerry have each done a fantastic job in these positions respectively but unfortunately paid work has encroached and they are both having trouble finding time to fulfill their volunteer tasks the way they would like to. The Group Director is responsible for coordinating with groups that contact the club for special visits.

    The Night Sky of December 2013 Dr. Wayne Wooten Professor of Astronomy For December 2013, the Moon will be new on December 3. The first two weeks find the moon waxing in the evening sky. The waxing crescent moon passes 7.5 degrees north of Venus on December 5th. The moon is first quarter on December 9th, and will interfere with the peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower on December 14th. The Full Moon, the Long Night Moon, is on December 17th. The winter solstice occurs at 11:11 AM CST on December 21st, and winter begins on the shortest day of the year. The waning gibbous moon passes five degrees south of Jupiter in the evening of December 19th. The last quarter moon rises at midnight on Christmas Day and passes 4 degrees south of reddish Mars. The waning crescent passes a degree south of Saturn in the dawn on December 29th. While the naked eye, dark adapted by several minutes away from any bright lights, is a wonderful instrument to stare up into deep space, far beyond our own Milky Way, binoculars are better for spotting specific deep sky objects.     Proceedings IMC Bollmannsruh 2003 29 Five wild years Reminiscences of the Leonids experience 1998 – 2002 Daniel Fischer K¨onigswinter, Germany Abstract This is not a scientific review of the surprises, discoveries and sensations the Leonids brought from 1998 to 2002, but a look back by one observer (and science writer) who often witnessed first-hand what went on in the sky — and also how science finally got its grip on the elusive and striking phenomenon of meteor storms. It was a truly an experience with a deep impact (no pun intended) that is not likely to be repeated... I admit it: before about ten years ago I had considered meteor observing, especially with your own eye, as one of the most useless branches of (amateur) astronomy, with no serious data reduction possible and dubious results. This was not true, at least at that time, of course (see Roggemans, 2004), but the progress made by the IMO had not been widely known to the outside world. Not in- terested at all in systematic meteor watching, I was struck by the idea of meteor storms nonetheless: I had read a lot about the fabulous Leonids storm of 1966 and eagerly devoured two big reviews of meteor storms in British journals. Beech et al (1995) had described these rare phenomena as both spectacular and little understood, while Mason (1995) predicted — using a crude model — storms of the Leonids with ZHRs around 5000 in 1998 and 1999. Would it be worth chasing after those possible storms? I was already travelling a lot for astronomy’s sake, both in the quest for eclipses (1983, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995 and so on) and comets (Halley in 1986), but for meteors? Then again, Brad Schaefer, the American astronomer famous for his professional work on astronomy with the naked eye, had told me in 1988 that for him one meteor storm would be “worth ten eclipses”.

    Some Questions on Beginning Astronomy Question: I came across your website whilst trying to find out more about astronomy. My 12 year old daughter is fascinated with astronomy having watched Stargazing and read a couple of books. I wanted to try going out on some clear nights this winter to look at stars and planets and wanted to get some top tips about how to set about it (binoculars, telescopes and star charts/ apps). I wonder if you have some advice or could point me to a good local retailer. Having seen your website I am interested in the talks that you have coming up and wanted to know if I can just turn up and pay the entrance fee of if I need to let someone know in advance. Would my daughter be able to attend too or are they adult only? Reply: It's good to hear that your daughter is showing an interest in astronomy – and the winter is an ideal time to start observing and learning about the night sky. Many of the winter constellations are bright and easy to identify and they are home to an abundance of interesting objects that you need only binoculars to discover. Added to this, the Milky Way is dramatic at this time of year. I would suggest starting by learning to recognise some of the main winter constellations and the most prominent stars in them. You’ll soon get to know these. With the advent of Spring, the winter stars will slip out of sight in the West and, in the East, 'new' constellations will rise for you to explore.

    The Night Sky of June Dr. Wayne Wooten Professor of Astronomy For June 2013, the Moon will be new on June 8th, so the first week fins the moon waning in the morning sky. On the 10th, the thin waxing crescent moon passes about 5 degrees south of the Venus- Mercury pairing in the SW sky. Venus is on bottom, but much brighter than Mercury to the upper left of it. The first quarter moon is high up in the south at sunset on June 16th and appears high lit. The waxing gibbous moon passes seven degrees south of Saturn in the SE on June 20th. The beginning of summer occurs at 12:04 AM CDT on June 21, the longest day of the year, with about 14 hours of daylight for the Gulf Coast. Full moon, the Honey Moon, is June 23rd. This full moon occurs very close to perigee, when the moon is closest to Earth, so if you think it is bigger than normal, you are right! Note also this creates Spring Tides, with the sun and moon aligned to produce very high and low tides. The last quarter moon is on June 30th.     The Night Sky of August Dr. Wayne Wooten Professor of Astronomy For August 2012, it is full moon on August 2nd, the Green Corn Moon. The last quarter moon is on August 9th. The waning crescent moon passes by Jupiter on the morning of August 11th, and by Venus on the morning of August 13th. On August 12, it is the peak for the Perseid Meteor Shower, our best annual celestial fireworks show, and the waning crescent moon will sit midway between the two brightest planets. If you have a dark sky site, you will see about a bright meteor every 5-10 minutes from midnight until dawn. They will seem to come out of the constellation Perseus, rising in the NE just before midnight. The new moon is on August 17th, and the waxing crescent moon passes five degrees south of Saturn on the evening of August 22nd, and then 3 degrees south of Mars later that evening. The first quarter moon is on August 24th, and the second full moon of August, a “blue moon”, is on August 31st. The first two weeks find the moon waning in the morning sky , making the darker evening skies idea for observing the Milky Way.
