Jacob’s Pillow is the longest-running dance festival in the United States, a National Historic Landmark, and a National Meal of Arts recipient. Founded in 1933, the Pillow has recently added to its rich history by expanding into a year-round center for dance research and development. 2018 Season highlights include U.S. company debuts, world premieres, international artists, newly commissioned work, historic Festival connections, and the formal presentation of work developed through the organization’s growing residency program at the Pillow Lab. International artists will travel to Becket, Massachusetts, from Denmark, Israel, Belgium, Australia, France, Spain, and Scotland. Groehn One lovely Wednesday afternoon, in the 1870's, two little girls sat on the McVittie front steps on the south side of Canfield Avenue West, between Second Boulevard and Third Avenue. They were watching the carriagos and horses as they clip-clopped to a stop in front of the Watton carriage stone next door. The ladies in elegant afternoon attire were "com!"" to call" on Mrs. Walter I"atton, the wife of a prominent Detroit denti"t.. Wednesday was the day Mrs. Watton IIreceived," and this was duly noted in a Detroit society blue book, which was a handy reference book for the lIin societyll ladies. Once again, almost one hundred years later, the atmosphere of ele gantly built homes with beautiful, landscaped lawns and quiet living can become a reality on tilis block. The residents who are now rehe.bilitating these homes are recognizing the advantage of historic tOlm house lh-;.ng, wi th its proximity to the center of business, cultural, and educati'm"~_ facilities. Our enthusiasm has blossomed into a plan called the CanfIeid West-Wayne Project, because we desire to share with others our discovery of its unique historical phenomenon. -

Historic Preservation in HistoricMichigan Preservation Big Rapids Housing Commission and Hollander Development Nisbett Building and Fairman Building Rehabilitation Projects Nisbett Building The Big Rapids Housing Commission, responding to increasing demand for high quality affordable housing, recognized that a downtown location offered potential residents a broader and more accessible service base than more suburban locations while expanding Fairman Building the market for downtown merchants. The commission partnered with Hollander Development to rehabilitate the Nisbett and Fairman Buildings, located in the heart of Big Rapids. By combining a wide variety of public and private funding with the federal and state historic preservation tax credits, the development team was able to make this combined $5.2-million-dollar investment possible. The projects created 47 new residential units, 38 of which are guaranteed to be affordable units; rehabilitated nearly 126,000 square feet of under- utilized commercial space; and created outdoor space for the use of the residents. The partnership between the Big Rapids Housing Commission and Hollander Development demonstrates that creativity is the key to reinvigorating communities. Historic Preservation in HistoricMichigan Preservation Eric, Tobi and Ryan Breisach 714 Wheaton Avenue, Kalamazoo, State TaxCredit Project The house at 714 Wheaton Avenue was built in 1891 and modified in 1950 by removing the front porch and building an enclosed stair addition to convert the resource to a triplex rental. The interior’s historic character suffered from the installation of false ceilings, inappropriate materials that covered plaster walls and floors, and water damage. Eric and Ryan Breisach, the father and son construction crew, hired a local contractor to help them finish a complete rehabilitation of the resource during the summer and fall of 2003. -

Kansai-Yamamoto Paper
Alexandria Lewis-Hawthorne Kansai Yamamoto is a Japanese designer, born on February 8, 1944 in Yokohama, Japan. Kansai studied both civil engineering and english at Nippon University. He then completed his studies at Bunka Fashion College and pursued a career in design. Kansai opened his own boutique in Tokyo in 1968. In 1971, he started his own company, Yamamoto Kansai Company Ltd, with his two partners ( Journal Runway Archive, 2018). Kansai set the foundation for Japanese fashion going mainstream in western fashion. Kansai was the first Japanese designer to move to Europe, a decade before Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto started showing their collections in Paris. He was at the forefront of contemporary Japanese fashion during the 1970s and 1980s. His saturated patterns and exaggerated silhouettes were influenced by the colorful art of the Momoyama period of Japanese art, 1573-1615 along with vibrant costumes of Kabuki theatre and classic manga illustrations, some of which could be seen in prints and mask motifs during Louis Vuitton’s 2018 Cruise Collection. Kansai is known for his avant-gardist designs which reference Japanese art and theatre. He is also credited with renewing interest in the traditional Kimono. David Bowie reached out to Kansai about making costumes for him after seeing one of his looks featured on the cover of Harper’s and Queen. Kansai was then commissioned by David Bowie to design the costumes for his Ziggy Stardust tour. He was the first designer to create a Bowie stage costume. The costumes consisted of widely cut and printed Kimono, extravagant silhouettes and suits made out of synthetic shiney materials. -

The Limón Legacy Still Thrives After 70 Years By Jeff Slayton March 25, 2017 The Limón Dance Company - Photo by Joseph Schembri “There is a dance for every single human experience.” José Limón The Limón Dance Company lit up the stage at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, presenting three works choreographed by José Limón over seventy years ago, and two recent works by Colin Connor and Kate Weare. Thanks to dance artists like Carla Maxwell, Risa Steinberg, Gary Masters and the new Artistic Director Colin Connor, the company has kept the Limón legacy alive and vibrant. In addition, the company continues to present new works by seasoned and up-and-coming choreographers. Born in Culiacan, Mexico, José Limón (1908-1972) formed his company in 1946 after performing for 10 years with modern dance pioneers Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Throughout his life, Limón continued to create new works; his last one being Carlota in 1972, the year of his death. In 1997, this great dance master was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs, NY. The program opened with Limón’s CONCERTO GROSSO which premiered in 1945 at the Humphrey-Weidman Studio in New York. Through his choreography, Limón artfully and brilliantly visualizes Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto #11 in D Minor, Opus 3. The work is, simply put, pure and joyful dancing. Staged and directed by former company member Risa Steinberg, dancers Kathryn Alter, Elise Drew Leon and Jesse Obremski performed with great musicality, clarity and ease. CONCERTO GROSSO is a jewel and these three dance artists are wonderful in it. -
