We conducted the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of Pse- phenidae, based on 143 morphological characters of adults, larvae and pupae and coded for 34 taxa, representing three outgroups and 31 psephenid genera, including four undescribed ones. A strict consensus tree calculated (439 steps, consistency index ¼ 0.45, retention index ¼ 0.75) from the two most-parsimonious cladograms indicated that the monophyly of the family and subfamilies is supported, with the exception of Eubriinae, which is paraphyletic when including Afroeubria. Here a new subfamily, Afroeubriinae (subfam.n.), is formally estab- lished for Afroeubria. The analysis also indicated that the ‘streamlined’ larva is a derived adaptive radiation. Here, suprageneric taxonomy and the evolution of some significant characters are discussed. Keys are provided to the subfamilies and genera of Psephenidae considering larvae, adults and pupae. Introduction type specimens and the association of adults and immature stages by rearing, five new genera were proposed for Ori- Psephenidae, the ‘water penny’ beetles, are characterized by ental taxa and a well-resolved phylogenetic tree was ob- the peculiar larval body shape (Figs 4–7).

  • Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1302-4 Insect egg size and shape evolve with ecology but not developmental rate Samuel H. Church1,4*, Seth Donoughe1,3,4, Bruno A. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4.

Brown Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma 73019 INTRODUCTION What are riffle beetles? This question is not new to me, nor is it unexpected, even when it comes from an entomologist. No formal designation has been proposed for the use of this common name, but many of us have unofficially adopted the term "riffle beetles" for the aquatic dryopoid beetles that typically occur in flowing streams, especially in the shallow riffles or rapids. Unlike the familiar and conspicuous water beetles such as dytiscids, gyrinids, and hydrophilids, riffle beetles do not swim and do not come to the surface for air. Most of them are slow in their movements and cling tenaciously to the substrate. Most are also quite small, about the size of household ants, although giants among them exceed the dimensions of a housefly. Some aquatic biologists restrict the term "riffle beetles" to members of the family Elmidae, or even to the subfamily Elminae, but in this review I also include the riffle-dwelling members of the family Dryopidae, the genus Lutrochus (Lutrochidae, formerly in the family Limnichidae), and the water penny beetles (family Psephenidae sensu lato). Most attention is devoted to the elmids, which are represented by the greatest numbers of both species and by Texas A&M University - College Station on 01/09/12. For personal use only. Annu. Rev. Entomol. 1987.32:253-273. Downloaded from www.annualreviews.org individuals. All elmids are aquatic as larvae.

This document defines the standard levels of taxonomic effort (STE) for bioassessment data compatible with the Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP) bioassessment protocols (Ode, 2007) or similar procedures.

Worldwide Bibliography of Aquatic and Semiaquatic Byrrhoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) William D. Shepard Essig Museum of Entomology University of California 201 Wellman Hall Berkeley, California 94720-0804 USA This bibliography is an ongoing project to record the literature on aquatic and semiaquatic Byrrhoidea (Families Dryopidae, Elmidae, Eulichadidae, Limnichidae, Lutrochidae, Psephenidae and Ptilodactylidae). It will never be complete in the sense that more is always being published. Also, there are many papers for which I have not located references, especially in the foreign literature. I suspect this bibliography is particularly deficient in citations from the Orient, Africa and the eastern Palearctic, from journals not indexed by citation services, and from the older literature. Periodically I add more citations. Additionally, corrections are made when I discover them or someone points them out to me. Therefore, if you have previously received a copy of this bibliography it may be outdated. Please check the date at the bottom of the Introduction to determine the most current version. Papers included herein are those that deal predominately with byrrhoids. Those papers that include byrrhoids only as part of a larger fauna are not included. There are a few exceptions here and there. I am willing to provide the time to maintain this database but I need your help. In particular I ask you, my colleagues, to assist me by contributing in the following ways. (1) I would like each byrrhoid specialist reading this to send me a bibliographic list containing full citations to all of the works that you have published. To my colleagues who publish in languages that do not use the Roman alphabet, it would greatly aid me if you could provide translations or transliterations of the citations in a European language that does use Roman characters (preferably English).
