Central Florida Council, BSA Central Florida Training Times OCTOBER 29, 2018 Volume 1, Issue 3 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE and RECHARTERING

It’s that time of the year again and your Training leadership team is working to make it go as smoothly as possible. One of the additional pieces of paper you get to turn in along with the recharter roster is your JTE scoresheet for 2018. This is your report card to yourself about how good of a program you ran for your Scouts this year. One category that is easy to get a SILVER rating in is Trained Leadership. All you need is for your Cubmaster/Scoutmaster and all Den Leaders/Assistant Scoutmasters to be trained for their position. If you want to achieve GOLD, then you need to get two- thirds of your Committee Members trained. For Cub Packs, all position training can be accomplished online. For Boy Scouts, it a little more complex, but achievable nonetheless. If all your untrained lead- ers devoted only 15 minutes a day towards getting trained, they would be done before your recharter gets turned in.

Let’s show our Scouts and Parents that we are committed to giving our Scouts the best program by getting trained today!

Glad you asked…. Attendance and Completion a Must to be Considered IOLS-Trained The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course gives adult leaders a practical introduc- tion to the patrol method of a Scout-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out of doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank. Along with Scoutmaster- Specifics, this course is required of all direct-contact leaders registered in a troop to be consid- ered “trained.” The leader (regardless of tenure) MUST attend and complete the course (this in- cludes the camping component). The question “Is it permissible for a long-tenured leader to talk with an IOLS trainer, demon- strate thorough knowledge of the course content, and receive credit for the course without at- tending an actual course?” has arisen. It is not permissible; all leaders must attend and com- plete the course as outlined by the current IOLS syllabus. There are several reasons for this guideline. 1. Long-tenured leaders who have been trained by the current syllabus can provide a better ex- perience for newer leaders. 2. Leaders who value training and demonstrate such a philosophy can lead their youth by exam- ple, thus creating a desire for and value of training in their Scouts. 3. While long tenure is certainly an asset, leaders who took training in years past can only bene- fit by knowing and experiencing courses using the current syllabus. Requirements/best practices change over time. 4. When learning important skills such as those taught in IOLS, the EDGE (Explain, Demon- strate, Guide, Enable) Method is the best to employ. It provides not only for instruction and ap- plication, but it also allows for instructor feedback and participant correction—not possible when a leader does not take the course.

Yes, YPT is still a requirement for all Adult Scouters!.... Earlier this year, the BSA launched a new Youth Protection Training Course. Soon thereafter, the National Council announced that all registered leaders in the BSA would need to complete this new training prior to October 1, 2018. Prior to Oct 1, the Council’s % of YPT Leaders was 97%. On Oct 1, it dropped to 65%. Ouch! Good news, though...As of Friday, Oct 26, we were back up to 70%. Not great, but improving. Let’s continue to encourage all our Leaders to complete this training as soon as possible. If they don’t have it, you can’t recharter them, and that hurts your unit. The course is available both online and as a classroom presentation. Please be sure to take this course online at your earliest convenience or check with your Dis- trict Training Chair for times and locations of classroom presentations. Your direc- tions for the online course are found here.
