April 2010 issue Winter Match Report

The 2010 Winter Match was held at Silver City Canine Training Center on February 28th. We had eleven different terrier breeds in attendance.

Of the 42 people who filled out attendance/raffle forms twenty-five were members and six people expressed interest in joining the club. These twenty-five members entered 26 in the events throughout the day.

The greatest number were from the Airedales. Five from Stirling Kennels privately and one of their breeding in the conformation classes and one Airedale in obedience. Close second were all the Cairns entered from both members and non-members, totaling 5. Other breeds represented were American Staffordshire, Australian, Irish, Kerry, Norwich, Parson Russell, Russell, Scottish and Welsh. The overall entries were 19 for Conformation, 12 for Sweeps, 6 for Juniors and 6 for obedience. We had one Airedale shown in Utility and they put on quite a show for anyone watching.

Our winners for the day are as follows: Sweepstakes first place went to an , Pineterri Bella Stella, owned by Gerald Walsh and shown in the 12-18 month class. Other winners in Sweeps were Karla Gilman and her bitch Bremadog Like the Sun in the 3-6month class and Rococo's Gold Reflection a male owned by Scott Rutherford won the 6-9 month class.

I would like to add my most sincere and gracious thanks to all of the board members who helped bring this event together. Without this team effort the event would not have happened. I also want to thank Dee Whitcomb who did so much behind the scenes with ribbons and prizes and gifts (with the help of Anne Kupferman and Maureen Lee). H715 - An Act to Promote Small Plot Farming in the Commonwealth Main Sponsor: Representative Steven D'Amico

Today, many farmers rent small parcels of land to supplement their main acreage. Unfortunately, they are often subject to restrictive zoning requirements.

As energy prices escalate over the next few years, the importance of growing food closer to where it is consumed will expand. In the future, densely populated states like Massachusetts will be forced to rely on small plots to meet much of our needs. Using intensive farming techniques, it is possible to gross $50,000 or more on small plots.

Under Massachusetts General Law, Municipalities can't prohibit, unreasonably regulate, or require special permits restricting agriculture. Currently, this applies to plots of 5 acres more. H715 would extend these protections to plots as small as 1 acre where it can be demonstrated that the land produces at least $1,000 in agricultural income.

Under the provisions of this bill, small plot farmers would become eligible for technical assistance and grants awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the USDA. An example would be The Farm Viability Enhancement Program, which provides technical assistance and implementation grants to help farmers increase productivity through the development of farm plans.
