9 ello Woodcreek residents. With summer wrapping up and the kiddos starting back to school we want to reiterate how important it is to watch your speed on the residential streets. Well for that matter on all streets. Also, be sure to look in all directions when you pull up to a STOP sign to make sure there are no bikes or pedestrians getting ready to cross. Let's all be safe this Fall. H CPR classes: We want to thank all those that attended the two CPR sessions held at the Fate firehouse and taught by Officer Kissane with Officer Aragon assisting. The first class, in July, also included an hour discussion on trauma care which is actually a part of the Department of Homeland Security initiative called "Stop the Bleed". A lack of materials prevented the sec- ond class in August to get the trauma training. See below for more information regarding that. It is great to report that due to the large interest in the CPR training, based on six that are on the waiting list, we are planning a THIRD CPR class on September 22nd. If you are interested and haven't signed up yet please call the office or send an email to the safety committee. If we continue having such great turnout we could make this into a monthly or bi-monthly activity. Because of the equipment that Officer Kissane uses for the class it will be held at the Fate firehouse.

It was recommended that residents have a "bag - valve mask" (also mentioned was a "pocket mask") available in an emergency (each vehicle and home?). This is the mask that fits over the nose and mouth of a person needing CPR. This allows one to perform mouth-to-mouth safely without coming into personal contact with someone else. These are fair- ly inexpensive and available online and now being stocked at local merchants. The one that the firehouse had was called "Res-Cue Mask" made by AMBU.

Trauma class: Now, back to the topic of trauma. We discussed with Officer Kissane the idea of holding the Trauma/Stop the Bleed training at our Woodcreek clubhouse on a regular basis whatever that may be. We will work that out with the appro- priate parties and post the info when it is ironed out.

Just like the CPR masks discussed above it was a recommended that everyone have a portable tourniquet in their vehi- cle as well as in their home. This is very critical to avoid someone from "bleeding out" which only takes two minutes or less depending on the wound. The two examples they mentioned were a 'combat application tourniquet' and a 'soft-T tourniquet'. Again, these can be purchased easily online.

Other safety ideas that we brainstormed with Officer Kissane include: 1. Figuring out the status of the DARE program. 2. Extending the bike safety that Officer Kissane does in the summer (Rockwall ISD?) to include all schools (including home-schooled students). 3. A little bit late for this year but early next year we talked about a swim safety course at our pool amenities. 4. Last year we hosted a couple of sessions of a self defense training course with the free support of White Tiger Tae- Kwon-Do trainers. Is there any interest to try this again? Maybe a class for women, children and/or the elderly resi- dents? Or all of the above individually.

10 5. Having a home security discussion to go over the various options a homeowner has to increase the security of their home and themselves (including fire extinguishers). 6. We have a resident that is willing to provide an informative session on the topic of cyber security and identity theft. Is there any interest in this?

And there were several more: neighborhood safety, animal safety, babysitting safety, fire safety, etc.

PLEASE respond and let us know if any of the ideas listed above sound interesting or if you have additional ideas or even if you want to make a comment on how to improve any idea.

We are growing rapidly and we want everyone to be trained, equipped and working towards a safe community. We have a new addition to the safety committee administration and hopefully will be able to increase the safety activities within the community (as demonstrated with this lengthy article). PLEASE let us know how we can make you feel safer.

Thank You — Safety Committee
