Results of Radioactive Material Monitoring at Bathing Areas (April-July, 2014) Friday, July 25, 2014 Water Environment Division, Environmental Management Bureau Ministry of the Environment Direct line: 03-5521-8316 Switchboard: 03-3581-3351 Director: Takashi Omura (ext. 6610) Coordinator: Saori Nagasawa (ext. 6614) Each local authority conducted radioactive material monitoring at bathing areas this summer. The Ministry of the Environment compiled the results reported from each prefecture and here announces that there were no reports of radioactive materials in excess of the reference values for water at bathing areas having been detected. 1. Survey Overview Number of locations: Surveys conducted at 422 bathing areas, etc. in 25 prefectures Survey items: Activity concentrations (radioactive iodine and radioactive cesium) in water at bathing areas Ambient dose rates at beach bathing areas Survey period: Early April to early July 2. Outline of Results ・There were no reports of radioactive materials in excess of the reference values(*) for water at bathing areas having been detected (see the Annex for details). * Reference value for radioactive materials in water at bathing areas Total for Cs-134 + Cs-137: 10 Bq/L ・It was reported that ambient dose rates at beaches were about the same as or less than those in surrounding areas. The compiled results are available at http://www.env.go.jp/jishin/monitoring/results_r-ba.html. For details of the survey results for individual bathing areas, please contact the local authority, etc. where the bathing area in question is located. ABSTRACT In Chiba Prefecture, Japan, during the Edo period (1603-1867), the development of waterway traffic by ships and the management of ports, highways and post towns around the ports progressed with the prosperity of the Edo (present-day Tokyo), which became heavily populated and the center of politics. We estimated that the demand of Japanese sake, which is luxury grocery item, was high. The freshwater layer that is abundant in mineral water to a depth of approxi- mately 10 m is formed in coastal sand dunes. The fresh water layer is hard water, in which the concentrations of miner- als such as calcium and magnesium are high. When the fresh water layer is used as the preparation water, the working rice malt and yeast in the sake brewing process become active.

Nesting and Stranding of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle on the Pacific Coast of the Boso Peninsula, Central Japan, in 2007

Nat. Hist. Res., Vol. 10 No. 2: 99-106, March 2009 Nesting and Stranding of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle on the Pacific Coast of the Boso Peninsula, Central Japan, in 2007 Fukashi Moriya Hiari-Izumiura Sea Turtle Protection Society 2217-3Hiari,Isumi,Chiba,298-0002 Japan E-mail: jomonjin.happy@gmail.com Abstract Nesting and stranding events of loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, were investigated along the Pacific coast of the Boso Peninsula, from Choshi to Katsuura, Japan, from May to November 2007. The 90 km coast line, represents the northernmost nesting site for the species in Japan, with three major nest- ing locations: Hiari-Izumiura beach, Isumi; Nakazato-Kouji beach, Shirako; and Kidohama beach, Yokoshibahikari. Seventeen nesting events were recorded, of which the presence of 12 nests was con- firmed. Twenty-four stranded individuals, 14 of which were subadults and juveniles, were recorded. The low nesting activity compared with other areas in Japan might be attributed to the relatively short period ap- propriate for nesting and hatching given the temperate latitude. The unusually high stranding rate of subadult and juvenile turtles may suggest that the region is a feeding ground for immature loggerhead sea turtles. Key words: Caretta caretta, loggerhead sea turtle, nesting observation, stranding survey, subadult and juve- nile turtles, Boso Peninsula. The Japanese Archipelago is the major nesting species in the Northwestern Pacific. ground for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in Materials and Methods the North Pacific, with beaches primarily located along the central and southern coast of the archipel- The study area ranged from Choshi to Katsuura ago.

Preface A magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of Sanriku, Japan at 14:46 JST on Friday, March 11, 2011 and triggered extremely destructive tsunami waves. The earthquake and tsunami destroyed, damaged, or washed away a number of buildings, houses and structures in Northeast Japan, including Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Chiba prefectures. The highest Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was recorded at Kurihara city in the northern part of Miyagi prefecture. The earthquake was named the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake (the Great East Japan Earthquake) by the Japanese government. In order to learn lessons from the unprecedented disaster and contribute to the improvement of disaster mitigation measures, the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM) and the Building Research Institute (BRI) has sent staff members to the affected regions and conducted extensive surveys on the damage to buildings and residential lands caused by the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent fires.
