Morphology, Phylogeny, and Evolution of Diadectidae (Cotylosauria: Diadectomorpha) by Richard Kissel A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy Graduate Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto © Copyright by Richard Kissel 2010 Morphology, Phylogeny, and Evolution of Diadectidae (Cotylosauria: Diadectomorpha) Richard Kissel Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology University of Toronto 2010 Abstract Based on dental, cranial, and postcranial anatomy, members of the Permo-Carboniferous clade Diadectidae are generally regarded as the earliest tetrapods capable of processing high-fiber plant material; presented here is a review of diadectid morphology, phylogeny, taxonomy, and paleozoogeography. Phylogenetic analyses support the monophyly of Diadectidae within Diadectomorpha, the sister-group to Amniota, with Limnoscelis as the sister-taxon to Tseajaia + Diadectidae. Analysis of diadectid interrelationships of all known taxa for which adequate specimens and information are known—the first of its kind conducted—positions Ambedus pusillus as the sister-taxon to all other forms, with Diadectes sanmiguelensis, Orobates pabsti, Desmatodon hesperis, Diadectes absitus, and (Diadectes sideropelicus + Diadectes tenuitectes + Diasparactus zenos) representing progressively more derived taxa in a series of nested clades. In light of these results, it is recommended herein that the species Diadectes sanmiguelensis be referred to the new genus -

It had long been my desire to become familiar by personal observation with the rich treasures of fossil Sauropsida in the collections there. I was especially interested in the structure of the Permiarn Tetrapoda, which had not yet been worked over connectedly. -

Sometime before his death his secretary, Miss Anna M. Brown, had begun work upon his extraordinarily extensive and difficult bibliography. These materials passed into my hands together with a nearly complete set of Cope's writings and his two great collections of fossil vertebrates, including fishes, birds, reptiles and mammals, now in the American Museum of Natural His- tory. Under my direction the bibliography was completely revised by Miss Jannette May Lucas and extensive scientific annotations were made by Dr. William Diller Matthew, Dr. W. B. -

Description of Calligenethlon watsoni based on computed tomography and resulting implications for the phylogenetic placement of embolomeres by Gabrielle Ruth Adams A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Sciences Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Gabrielle Ruth Adams Abstract Although Calligenethlon watsoni, an enigmatic embolomere from Joggins, Nova Scotia, has been known since 1934, an in-depth description of its anatomy and taxonomic diagnosis is missing from the literature, resulting in subsequent specimen referrals to be based largely on the nondiagnostic trait of small body size. Here, an exquisitely preserved Calligenethlon specimen is described in detail using micro-computed tomography. The anatomical knowledge gained here allowed for the re-evaluation of all referred specimens and creation of the first ever, robust morphological diagnosis of Calligenethlon. This anatomical data was then used to test the recent hypothesis that braincase characters unite embolomeres in a stem tetrapod position. A series of analyses, using the most up-to-date sampling of characters and relevant tetrapod taxa, resulted in the conclusion that embolomeres do group together in a stem tetrapod position, but braincase characters are seemingly uninfluential in this placement, and taxon sampling may be of greater significance. ii Acknowledgements Firstly, I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Hillary Maddin for the continued support, advice, and belief that this project would work against all odds.
