Prior to the 2016-17 season, the WBBL Trophy took place on the same day as the BBL Cup Final. This is only the second ever WBBL Cup Final. The 2017 WBBL Cup Final was the inaugural final with Manchester beating Nottingham to win the first ever WBBL Cup Final. This is the second WBBL Cup Final to take place at Arena Birmingham (formally Barclaycard Arena) and the fourth time a major WBBL final has been held in this Arena. Prior to the 2014-15 season, the venue was known as the National Indoor Arena before under-going a £26 million makeover, adding a high-class spectator experience to the amazing action-packed entertainment on court. This season saw a new addition to the league, Durham Palatinates, increasing the number of teams in the league to 11. This is the sixth WBBL Final that Nottingham Wildcats have made. They previously made the WBBL Trophy Final in 2015, the WBBL Cup Final in 2017, and the WBBL Play-Off Final in 2015, 2016, and 2017. In all finals, they have come runners-up and have yet to win their first ever major WBBL Final. This is the first ever WBBL Final that Caledonia Pride have made. This season marks only the second season Caledonia Pride have been in the WBBL, having joined as a new team for the 2016-17 season. History is guaranteed today as if either Nottingham or Caledonia win, it’ll be their first ever WBBL Final victory. The WBBL Cup competition commenced back in October, with three games in the First Round. Caledonia began their journey to the Cup Final with a 64-55 victory over Cardiff Met Archers. Oaklands Wolves defeated London Lions in a very close 73-71 victory, and Team Northumbria thumped to a 87-65 win over their Northern neighbours Durham Palatinates. Onto the Quarter Finals and Trophy 2017 runners-up Leicester ensured their Semi-Final placing with an empathic 90-74 victory over Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters. Northumbria sent Oaklands packing with a 72-58 win, and Caledonia continued their journey to the final with a big 86-76 win over Cup Final 2017 winners Manchester Mystics. Meanwhile, Nottingham Wildcats started their Cup Final journey with also a big win against Championship leaders Sevenoaks Suns, 67-58. 4 The Semi-Finals saw Nottingham defeat their East Midlands rivals Leicester Riders in a 75-66 victory, booking their sixth WBBL Final, and Caledonia narrowly saw off Team Northumbria with a 66-63 victory, booking their very first WBBL Final appearance. 5
