Basketball OFFICIAL RESULTS VERSION HISTORY 5–15 APRIL Basketball OFFICIAL RESULTS VERSION HISTORY SHARE THE DREAM Cairns Convention Centre Basketball (CCV) Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre (TEN) Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCE) Apr 5 – Apr 15 Competition Format and Rules Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Competition Format The basketball program at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games consists of men’s and women’s tournaments. The competition will include eight teams in each of the men’s and women’s events. Each team will consist of 12 athletes. The format and rules for both tournaments are the same. They will begin with the preliminary round, for which the eight teams will be divided into two pools of four teams, with the top four ranked teams in Pool A. Competing nations: Preliminary rounds at Cairns Convention Centre: Men Pool A Women Pool B Australia New Zealand Nigeria Jamaica New Zealand India Canada Malaysia Preliminary rounds at Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre: Men Pool B Women Pool A England Australia Cameroon Canada India England Scotland Mozambique The top two teams from Pool A proceed to the semifinals, while the bottom two teams from Pool A will play the top two teams from Pool B in the qualifying finals. The winners of the qualifying finals proceed to the semifinals. The remaining teams from Pool B are eliminated. Following the preliminary round, the competition will follow a straight knockout format, with semifinals, a bronze medal game and gold medal game. Sport Rules and Procedures Game description: In accordance with FIBA regulations, basketball games for both men and women will last 40 minutes, with each game consisting of four periods of 10 minutes. There is a 24-second time limit for each ball possession and the clock stops whenever the referee blows a whistle. Cairns Convention Centre Basketball (CCV) Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre (TEN) Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCE) Apr 5 – Apr 15 Each team also has seven players on the bench and there is no limit to the number of substitutions that can be made. If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, extra periods of five minutes are played until one team emerges as the winner. There is a break of two minutes in between each overtime period. Each player is allowed five personal fouls, after which he/she is disqualified from that game, but he/she may be ejected earlier for misconduct or a major flagrant foul. Classification and tiebreaking rules Classification during preliminary round: During the preliminary round, before all teams have played all of their games, if two or more teams have the same win/loss record, they will be ranked by goal difference of all completed games. If still tied, all tied teams will share the same rank. Classification at end of the preliminary round: At the end of the preliminary round, after all the teams have played one game against every team in the pool, teams shall be classified according to their win-loss record, namely two points for each game won, one point for each game lost (including lost by default) and zero points for a game lost by forfeit. If two or more teams have the same win/loss record of all games in the group, the game between these teams will decide on the classification. If the two or more teams have the same win-loss record of the games between them, further criteria will be applied in the following order: Higher goal difference of the games between them Higher number of goals scored in the games between them Higher goal difference of all games in the group Higher number of goals scored in all games in the group If still tied before all games have been played in the group, tied teams shall share the same ranking. If these criteria still cannot decide at the end of the preliminary round, a draw shall decide on the final classification.
