October 2020 CORSA Chapter 921 Vol. 47 No. 10

President Sez

Welcome to October! Ordinarily I would be excited to talk with you about the upcoming Great Western Fan Belt Toss and Swap Meet (GWFBT&SM), but, not this year. Another fun event, cancelled. So, what to do? Our Activities Chairman, Scott, has not let us down! See the Activities Calendar in this Vairmail for some fun ideas! One of the things we are working on is a meeting venue wherein we can meet the State and local requirements for social distancing. Again, Scott is working on our behalf to find a suitable venue. We think we can find a local (that is, near Ken Bald- President Bruce win’s very nice venue) place to meet. If/when we do, we will notify you via email. I’d like to take a moment to extend my appreciation to Royce Hildreth of Hil- dreth Media. Royce has, for many years, acted as Webmaster/Administrator for Corvair Center, our SDCC Web- site. Royce has notified SDCC that he must step aside in his role on our behalf. Our site employs Phorum soft- ware, and that software must be maintained and updated as necessary to keep the site operating smoothly. We do have several moderators (Matt Nall, Ryan Counterman) who keep the dialog on track and delete off topic items. But we will need the expertise of a Webmaster/Administrator. Any ideas? If so please let me know as soon as possible. By now you have received the news that Lorrie Tustison must step aside as Chair of the 2020 Interna- tional CORSA Convention. She needs to marshal all her physical resources in her battle against breast cancer. Lorrie, we understand your situation, and are praying that you will prevail against this disease. Be advised that Lorrie has asked me to continue as CoChair of the Concours, and I am happy to do that. So, I am calling for a volunteer to step up to chair the convention. Lorrie has advised that most everything is in place from last year’s planning. Nevertheless, there are bound to be some changes before July, 2021, so we need a responsible person at the helm. Is that responsible person you? Let us know!

GM Plans To Introduce The Monza In Mexico Since its local launch in early 2019, the new has become a notable sales success in China and is currently Chevrolet‘s best-selling nameplate in that country. Although this com- pact is thus far a unique vehicle for the Chinese market, GM Au- thority has learned that plans to introduce the next- generation Monza in Mexico. Sources familiar with the matter informed us that GM has plans to launch the Chevrolet Monza in the Mexican market in the coming months, as sedans maintain a high level of acceptance in the Latin coun- try. In fact, the compact-sedan segment remains one of the most popular in Mexico, but the company hasn’t competed in it since production of the ceased in North America last year. Custom 1963 Chevy Corvair Greenbrier For Sale: Video Custom rides polished to shining perfection are all well and good, but not everyone likes that particular aesthetic. On the other side of the spectrum are the rat rods and patina-laden customs that show off their imperfections with pride, just like this painted-up 1963 Chevy Corvair Greenbrier. Now, this wild surfer mobile is up for sale. No matter what angle you look at it, this custom Chevy Corvair wagon drips with attitude. The exterior was airbrushed with a wild new Rat Fink style that’s perfect for a ’63, with flying eyeballs and a surf rat making this thing one of a kind.

Finny enough, the custom airbrushed graphics were clear coated, which means this look will stay looking just like this. Complementing the Rat Fink airbrush goodies is a variety of stickers, not to mention a healthy bit of patina as well. In the corners, this custom 1963 Chevy Corvair rides on 15-inch aluminum wheels fitted with Goodyear tires. The surfboards mounted on the roof included in the sale as well. Providing the go is a 2.4L H6 engine, which was recently rebuilt and hums away without much muffling.

This Chevy Corvair was also fitted with all-new brakes, and a new fuel system as well. The interior matches the exterior with its own airbrushed headliner and Rat Fink details. The cloth upholstery is complemented by red vinyl, and there’s a custom stereo to pump out some tunes. Alpine components and an array of speakers mounted underneath the rear bench seats round out the sound system, and of course, we can’t forget the footprint gas pedal. What’s more, the dash features an autograph from Ed Roth’s son (in case you didn’t know, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth created the Rat Fink character back in the day).

Now, this custom 1963 Chevy Corvair is on offer for $21,900 from Showdown Auto and on Ebay too. See video: https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/09/custom-1963-chevy-corvair- greenbrier-for-sale-video/

(To me the Greenbrier sound like it’s about to drop a rod or suck a valve, Jon Peters)

Minutes: San Diego Corvair Club, September 10, 2020

The September 10, 2020 Zoom meeting of the San Diego Corvair Club was called to order at 7:00PM by President Bruce St. Gean. Bruce began the meeting by introducing the Club officers. He queried the members as to how many had been driving their Corvairs, and a number responded that they had. He also asked if there were any online guests, and there were none. There were seventeen members present. Old Business On motion and second, the minutes of the August 13, 2020 were approved. Scott Szalkowski reported on the Renewal Application, SDCC Non Profit status. SDCC has not yet been notified of action by the State of California. Scott Szalkowski reported on the status of the SDCC auction car. David Kerth installed the waste gate pressure switch for the water injection, which comes on during boost. The switch needs to be tested. The tank and lines need cleaning, and several suggestions were made for proper cleaning. The car needs to be detailed. Lorrie Tustison stated that the car needs to be returned to their garage due to insurance issues. There was no other old business. New Business Jon Peters, Membership Chairman and Newsletter Editor, reported 72 members and 4 subscribers. The list of past due members is getting long; Jon will send emails to all past due members. David Kerth, Treasurer, reported disbursements of $625.00 for the Corvair Center Website, and $89.00 reimbursement to Kay Smith. Dues income was disclosed, as was a disbursement of $168.00 for post office box renewal. A check was re- ceived from Clarks Corvair Parts in the amount of $100.00 for Junkyard Primers. A discussion ensued regarding the details of the Treasurer’s Report. It was suggested that members be advised as to month- ly income and monthly expenses (item and amount), but that such detail not be published in the Vairmail. There was a con- sensus that the Treasurer’s Report be published annually in detail, per the By Laws. Scott Szalkowski, Activities Chairman, outlined the activities planned for future months. On September 20, member Tom Wright will host a car show (see Vairmail, Activities). On October 18, SDCC will host a poker run, starting in Carlsbad and ending at the Bali Hai in San Diego. The One Day Avair is tentatively slated for November 7th in Rainbow, CA. There will be no meeting in December; new officers will be installed at the SDCC Annual Christmas Party. Bruce announced that nominations will be presented at the October meeting. Elections will be held at the November meet- ing, and the new officers will be installed at the Annual Christmas Party. To accomplish this schedule, he appointed Brad Larson, Frank Purdy, and Jon Robere as the Nominating Committee.

Bruce continued by announcing that the By Laws are in need of updating. To that end, he appointed Bob Bacchi, Jim Hoscher, and Ron Durie as the By Law Committee. The objective is to present a set of updated By Laws at the March, 2021 meeting. Bruce concluded New Business by advising that there would not be a Convention Report, and asked members to consider serving as CoChair of the 2021 International CORSA Convention.

Tech Discussion

In response to a report that the auction car was prone to overheating, Bruce advised that overheating is not unexpected. The car has a 0.125” longer than stock stroke. The attendant higher piston speeds are likely to generate more heat. The cylinder heads may require deflashing to promote more efficient air flow, and the use of the 12 plate oil cooler should be confirmed. Bill Muno suggested that proper engine shrouding is essential for engine cooling and to keep the engine clean.

Bill Muno talked about installing an iPhone plug to play music though the radio.

There was some discussion as to when we can we return to our old meeting site at Ken Baldwin’s office.

Buy and Sell

Toby Brown needs a belly pan tunnel cover for a late model. Bob Bacchi said club did a tune up tape, and we should duplicate it on cd or on YouTube. Bruce needs a windshield for a Greenbrier. Scott said he had one. Rene has a 64 Monza coupe for sale for $5500.00.

On motion and second, the meeting was adjourned at 8:00pm.

Respectfully submitted, Mike Evans, Secretary

CORSA DASH PROJECT I bought my first Corvair less than 3 years ago, so I am novice with a lot to learn. It was advertised as a 1965 Corsa Turbo Convertible. I did some research and quickly realized that my Corvair started life as a Monza with a power glide. Overall, the conversion to a Corsa was done very well and without looking at the VIN few people would notice that it is not an original Corsa. One of my first posts to a Corvair forum I asked if should call my Corvair a “Corsa Clone”? One of the re- sponders recommended that I refer to it at as a “Corsa Tribute”. I like the sound of that bet- ter. Back in March when the Covid-19 lock down started I decided to do some work on my dash. My speedometer was reading very high and the odometer did not work. I removed the dash and pulled the speedometer. I took it a local shop in Fallbrook that special- izes in trouble shooting electrical and wiring hot rods as well as speedometer repair. He had my speedometer on his test equipment and diagnosed in minutes. He also had all the parts in stock (including a NOS knob for the odometer reset). Two days later I had my rebuilt speedometer back looking like new for $100.

Since I had the dash out, I decided to install LED dash lights. I settled on YOOSEN Ceramics Interior/ Exterior LED Light Super Stable and Bright Bulb Bayonet BA9…. bulb from Amazon ($13 for 10). I first ordered the Ice Blue but then switched to the White which I like better. I did use the Ice Blue in the turn signals and bright headlight indicator. These bulbs are direct replacements for the original bulbs. They will work in all but the Oil Pressure and Temperature Warning light. I also used one of the white ones to replace the radio light.

While waiting for the LED lights I turned my attention to the notorious Corvair Clock! I did research online and was surprised to find out it is not really an electric clock. It is a mechanical clock with an electric wind- er! There are many videos online on the repair of these clocks. (It is best to Google for Chevy or GM clocks rather than just Corvair clocks.) The problem is that the points burn that control the winding solenoid. I took the clock apart and cleaned up the points and lubed the mechanism. I used curved jaw needle nose pliers to bend the crimps in the case that hold the clock together. To reassemble I used 3 small cable ties linked together to hold the face in place while I re-crimped the case. The clock came back to life! There are many theories why the clocks fail and multiple solutions. Some wire the 12v to the ignition switch, so it does not run all the time but then when you park at a car show your clock stops. Others wire in a diode to help minimize arcing. The quartz clock does not “tick” like the original and many object to it not being original and think concourse points should be deducted. I com- bined several solutions. I inserted a diode in the 12v wire to the clock and added an on/off switch that I hid under the dash. I don’t know if make the clock will last longer or not, but if I remember to turn it on, I will have a ticking clock at the car shows.

All I had to do after that was to put the Corsa dashboard back in, right? WRONG! Since I was there, I de- cided to put in the annoying Corsa over temperature buzzer and the interior courtesy lights. Then I pulled the radio to fix it. While it was out, I added an auxiliary jack and Bluetooth to the 55-year-old mono AM radio. New speak- er, antennae, rear seat sound deadening and restoring the dash harness finished off the project. These items will be discussed in more detail in the next installment of this project. I forgot to mention the backup cam- era which folds out of sight when not in use. The Bluetooth dongle will work from inside the ashtray, so it is hidden as well. The first picture is both a before and after picture of my dash. I did everything I could to maintain a stock appearance. More next month…….Bill Muno
