Ten Years Ago, Borschberg Flew up to 9235M Onboard Solar Impulse
PRESS RELEASE For 8 July 2020 Ten years ago, Borschberg flew up to 9235m onboard Solar Impulse Lausanne, Switzerland, 1 July 2020 – Ten years ago on 8 July 2010, Swiss pilot André Borschberg established an extraordinary FAI world record, which remains unbeaten, by reaching the altitude of 9235m with an aircraft powered by the energy of the sun. The flight was made at the Payerne air base, Switzerland, with one-seater airplane Solar Impulse. During this flight, he set two other records: Gain of height (8744m) and Duration (26h10m19s), also in the Solar-Powered Airplane category. He took off on 7 July and landed the next day, thus making the first overnight flight in the history of solar aviation. These three records marked the first official recognition of the Solar Impulse’s performances. In the following years, FAI ratified a series of records by either pilots Bertrand Piccard or André Borschberg onboard two different Solar Impulse aircraft. HB-SIA, rolled out in 2009, was used until 2013 to make several solar aviation firsts, such as the July 2010 flight and the 2013 crossing of the USA in several legs. HB-SIB, presented to the public in 2014, was flown alternately by Piccard and Borschberg to complete the circumnavigation of Earth in several legs from 2015 to 2016. André Borschberg, now 67, considers himself an entrepreneur with a passion for exploration. Pursuing his childhood dream of flying, he trained as a pilot in the Swiss Air Force and then earned several degrees in engineering and management. In 2003, he met fellow countryman and adventurer Bertrand Piccard, who, in 1999, achieved the first non-stop ballooning flight around the world. -

However, Branson has used his own basic business model in various fields, making him a highly successful and versatile businessman. He was born in 1950 in London and started his business career with the “Student” magazine aged 16. In 1970 he founded Virgin as a mail order record business, opened a record shop in Oxford Street, London, called Virgin Records. The name "Virgin" indicated that they were all new at business. In 1972 he built a recording studio in Oxfordshire where the first Virgin artist, Mike Oldfield, recorded the 'Tubular Bells' album. In 1977 he signed the Sex Pistols and other bands including Culture Club and the Rolling Stones, helping to make Virgin Records one of the top six record companies in the world. In 1992, to keep his airline company afloat, Branson sold Virgin Records to EMI for £500 million. Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984. Virgin Atlantic uses a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing jets and operates between the United Kingdom and North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia from its bases at Gatwick and Heathrow airports. In 2011 Virgin Atlantic carried 5.3 million passengers, making it the eighth largest UK airline in terms of passenger volume. -

NCAR Conference Surveys Balloon Instrument Stabilization If a telescope or other astronomical sensor can be lifted by a balloon above much of the earth’s atmos phere, more detailed planetary and stellar observations u»_o of various kinds are possible than can ever be achieved HO cd from the ground. In every balloon-borne experiment of this kind, however, the problems are the same: How can an astronomical sensor find and track a pinpoint target? How can the spatial orientation of the balloon platform be controlled sufficiently to allow the delicate E "e3 pointing apparatus to do its work? A considerable number of approaches have been or are being tried to solve these questions. A recent NCAR-sponsored conference brought together scien tists actively engaged in balloon-borne astronomical exploration, in order to sketch an over-all picture of the state of the art, and to accelerate progress by increasing communication among them. CONFERENCE IMPRESSIONS At the conference, held in Cambridge, Massachusetts r------i I " I in late October, some general impressions of the present state of the art emerged from descriptions of various stabilization systems: —Tracking stability to within one minute of arc is well within present capabilities. —The achievement of better-than-one-second-of-arc stability represents engineering of a high order of skill. J Nevertheless, theoretical limits of stability are much higher; even the .02 second of resolution hoped for the Stratoscope II system does not approach them. —A balloon vehicle provides a platform with excellent 0 / e ) P 5 ! stability. At float altitude, pendulum motion is usually five minutes of arc, and seldom exceeds thirty minutes. -

Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones flew nonstop around the world in a hot-air balloon—over 28,500 miles! Their trip started in Switzerland and ended in Egypt. Piccard and Jones flew high to stay above dangerous weather systems. They stayed in a capsule attached to the balloon for their 20-day adventure. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh was the first pilot to fly nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean. His airplane, called the Spirit of St. Louis, carried a lot of fuel for the __1 33 2 hour flight. Lindbergh struggled to stay awake for the long flight. Jim Shekhdar was the first person to row across the Pacific Ocean without help. It took him 9 months to row his 20-foot rowboat 8,000 miles. He started in Peru and finished in Australia. During his journey, Shekhdar battled with sharks and almost crashed into huge ships. -

Manned by two students from Fribourg, the speaker, and a prize- winning pilot of the international Gordon-Bennett cup 2019, a balloon ascended to 4000 m asl, commemorating a pioneering flight measuring cosmic rays. Using 21st century technology the flux of cosmic rays increasing with altitude was verified. This article tells the story behind this event and what circumstances made it possible. A NEW WIND OF HOPE Breitling is delighted to announce that the humanitarian round-the-world tour, launched in 2009 to commemorate the feat achieved by Breitling Orbiter 3 ten years earlier, has already served to raise almost one hundred thousand euros (USD 140,000) to be devoted to fighting one of the most dreadful diseases to affect children. This odyssey celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first non-stop round-the-world balloon flight involves a “hot-air balloon” replica of the famous Breitling Orbiter 3, flown by Brian Jones – one of the two heroes of the original record-setting accomplishment in 1999. In addition to a number of stopovers in Europe, the journey to date has provided opportunities to visit Israel, Japan, Australia and the United States – as well as a detour via Curaçao in the Dutch West Indies, where no balloon had ever yet ventured. The funds raised during this round-the-world tour organized by Breitling are intended to support the fight against noma, a devastating and fatal disease which – as Brian Jones explained in a number of presentations – disfigures and kills tens of thousands of children around the world every year. The Winds of Hope foundation, created by Breitling and the two balloon pilots, Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard, just after their exploit, aims to eradicate this scourge by launching prevention and early-screening programs in the most severely affected countries. The foundation is currently active in five African countries, and the funds raised in recent months will enable it to begin taking action in at least two other countries. -

Lucy Luck Stefan Inducted into the U. S. Ballooning Hall of Fame August 2, 2009 Born March 15, 1923 in St. Paul Minnesota Lucy’s interest, love and enthusiasm for flying probably began when she was eight years old when her oldest brother bought her a ride on an airplane at World Chamberlain Airport in Minneapolis. At an early age, her Dad described Lucy as a "Sparkplug". To her siblings she was "Sparky” and she still is!!! And she is definitely a “Sparkplug” in the history of ballooning. As one of the early women aeronautical engineering students at the university in Minnesota, she met Professor Jean Piccard and his balloonist wife Jeanette Piccard. Professor Piccard became one of her college professors. During her ballooning activities she flew with Tony Fairbanks in Philadelphia and met Tracy Barnes in Minneapolis and got to know such notable balloonists as Malcolm Forbes, Dewey Reinhart, Bertrand Piccard and Eddie Allen. Her Commercial Pilot, Lighter-Than-Air, Free Balloon License (limited to hot air balloons, with or without airborne heaters) is dated October 31, 1973. She received this in the early days of ballooning when all you had to do was sign your name on the license. She received her fixed wing aircraft pilot’s license when she was 40 years old, and has been around ballooning for fifty years. She was never actually a balloon pilot, but was a crew member and an observer for many years. Lucy has flown in both gas and hot air balloons. Her most spectacular flights were three that she had in Switzerland flying over the Swiss Alps and landing twice in Germany and once in Italy.
