6 Shawnee State Cross Country Outlook

The Shawnee State Men’s Cross Country Team has built an NAIA powerhouse the past few years. In 2008, the Bears earned a bid to the NAIA Meet and placed 11th, their best finish in school history. The Bears’ came back the next year with a goal to finish better. After finishing 2nd at the American Mideast Conference Meet behind 2009 NAIA Champion Malone Universi- ty, the Bears’ captured their first top 5 finish, placing 4th overall. 2010 was nothing less than special. The team took four meet titles as well as winning the All-Ohio NAIA/Division II Meet. In their first season in the Mid-South Conference, the Bears ran over their competition with a perfect score of 15 to capture the program’s first conference title. Shawnee State kept up their momentum to finish 4th for the second consecutive year at the NAIA Meet, despite overcoming numerous obstacles in the meet.

Shawnee State looks to continue their success this season, despite having to replace 10 from last year’s roster. Graduation wounded the Bears’ roster from last year as four of the Bears’ top seven runners will not return this season, including 2010 MSC Runner of the Year and 2008 All-American Keegan Rathkamp, Marathon All-American Michael Owen, Chuck Wentz and Josh Linkous. These four runners have been an instrumental part of the Bears’ success the past few years.

Despite losing four of the top seven runners, the Bears’ aren’t looking to rebuild but to reload. Three top runners return to lead the Bears. Junior Galen Dills will contend as the Bears’ top runner. Junior Blake Wysocki and sophomore and 2010 MSC Freshman of the Year Brad Lis- ton also return to lead the young Bears. Also returning for the Bears are juniors Brandon Brown and Eli Gerlach and sophomores Jeremy Anderson, Tyler Cone, Jeremy Hornick, Ad- am Schroeder, Jordan Selbee and Joe Stewart. Dills, Liston, Linkous, Wysocki and Schroeder each earned MSC honors last season.

SSU’s 2011 roster boasts nine newcomers, including a pair of transfers and a promising fresh- man class. Senior Derek Ryan comes to the Bears’ squad after running three seasons at Mar- ian University, where he was a NAIA National Qualifier and MCC honoree. Tyler Hooley, transferred in after one season for the Quakers at Wilmington College. Other newcomers in- clude sophomore Jeremy Hornick and freshmen Taylor Conn, Breydon Gates, Sammy Hol- bert, Corey James, Brandon Magill and Sam Power. Holbert comes from a very successful running program at Unioto High School. He was a four-year state qualifier in cross country for the Tanks. Gates qualified for the state cross country meet twice during his high school career at Belpre and finished 24th overall as a senior with a time of 16:20.

Shawnee State’s schedule boasts a field of tough competition. The Bears open the season on September 3rd at the Flyer 5K at the University of Dayton against a field of NCAA and NAIA competitors. Shawnee State then runs at the Iona College Meet of Champions and the All- Ohio Championship, before they return home on October 7th to win their ninth consecutive Shawnee State Invitational. The Bears then travel to Michigan for the Great Lake Chal- lenge. Shawnee State returns home to host the Mid-South Conference Meet on November 5th. On November 19, the Bears look to make their fourth consecutive trip the NAIA National Championship.

7 Shawnee State Cross Country Outlook, continued

The Shawnee State Women’s Cross Country Team is looking to have their best season in school history as they return six of last year’s top runners. Last season, in their inaugural sea- son in the Mid-South Conference the Bears captured the programs first ever conference title and earned the team’s second bid to the NAIA National Meet where they finished 25th. Shaw- nee State looks to defend their conference title and better their finish this year at the NAIA Meet.

Leading the Bears this season is a core of upperclassman including four seniors and a jun- ior. Sara Armstrong, Brittney LiPira, Brianna McCauley and Torey Predmore, all of which are four-year letter winners, return for their final season at Shawnee State and hope to make it memorable, while junior Kasey Hosier returns for a third season. In their freshman season, Armstrong, LiPira, McCauley and Predmore helped Shawnee State earn their first NAIA Na- tional Meet appearance in which they finished 11th overall. Armstrong, LiPira and McCauley each participated in the meet. In 2009, LiPira and Hosier each earned individual bids to the NAIA National Meet. Armstrong sat out most of the 2009 season due to injury. Last season, Armstrong returned to running and the five led a young group of runners to four Top 5 meet finishes, a league championship and a 25th place finish at the NAIA National Meet. Armstrong led the Bears at the MSC Meet with a first place finish and was named Mid-South Conference Runner of the Year, while LiPira and Hosier each earned 1st Team All-MSC honors. Also returning from last year’s team includes sophomores Brianna Cahill and Sarah Rug- gles. Ruggles competed in the NAIA National Meet last year.

New to the Bears’ squad this season is nine freshmen and transfer Arielle Knapp. Knapp transfers in after running two years for the Cardinals at Otterbein College. Incoming freshmen include three-time state qualifier Stephanie Cleland, Marie Egbert, Ashlyn Howie, Mary Inskeep, Andrea Light, Jamie Retherford, Deidra Teets and Brianna Tudor.

Shawnee State’s schedule boasts a field of tough competition. The Bears open the season on September 3rd at the Flyer 5K at the University of Dayton against a field of NCAA and NAIA competitors. Shawnee State then runs at the Iona College Meet of Champions and the All- Ohio Championship before they return home on October 7th for the Shawnee State Invitational. The Bears then travel to Michigan for the Great Lake Challenge and return home to defend their MSC Title at the Mid-South Conference Meet on November 5th. 26 Shawnee State Cross Country Mid-South Conference

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institu- tions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and women, offering championships in 15 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly over- sees the conference and the office of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.

27 Shawnee State Cross Country NAIA

About the NAIA The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa- tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men's sports pro- gram would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources cur- rently allocated to the women's sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde- pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive dif- ference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the lat- est cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student- athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
