It compiles Finland’s assessments on environmental status of marine environment. It is the main research unit in Finland that carries out scientific marine environmental research. It hosts the Finnish marine monitoring data bases, runs the Finnish Research Vessel Aranda and the Marine Ecology Laboratory. It coordinates the consortium of Finnish Marine Infrastructure and the development of multi-sectoral national Marine Information Portal. The Arctic Centre, affiliated to the University of Lapland, is a multidisciplinary research institute that studies global change, climate change, sustainable development, and environmental and minority law in the circumpolar Arctic area. Its science centre exhibition popularizes science for wide public and schools, and its information service provides information for professional audiences and political decision makers. The exhibition has about 100 000 visitors every year.
