    About the 17th Karmapa Liao Yiwu On the morning of 4 June, 1989, a contingent of over two hundred thousand soldiers surrounded the Chinese capital of Beijing, where they opened fire on unarmed protesters in a massacre at Tiananmen Square that shook the entire world. On 5 March of that same year, there had been another large massacre in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, news of this earlier event had been effectively suppressed. Because of the absence of the Western news media, the PLA’s cold- blooded killing of Tibetan protesters was never recorded on camera. The holy city of Lhasa was about ten times smaller than Beijing at that time, and Bajiao Square where the massacre took place was about ten times smaller than Tiananmen Square, and yet over ten thousand peaceful protesters assembled in that narrow square, where they clashed with some fifteen thousand heavily-armed soldiers. As a result of this encounter, more than three hundred civilians lost their lives, another three thousand were imprisoned, and the “worst offenders” were subsequently sentenced to death. The Jokhang Temple located next to the Potala Palace was attacked and occupied by army troops because it was flying the Snow Lion Flag of Tibetan independence, and it was burned to the ground along with its precious copy of the Pagoda Scriptures, a text which symbolizes the dignity of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism. Tens of thousands of Tibetan Buddhists stood in the street bewailing the loss of their sacred text, and the lamas continually tried to rush into the burning temple to rescue the scriptures, but were shot down amidst the flames.

    FORKTAIL 23 (2007): 1–11 An annotated list of birds wintering in the Lhasa river watershed and Yamzho Yumco, Tibet Autonomous Region, China AARON LANG, MARY ANNE BISHOP and ALEC LE SUEUR The occurrence and distribution of birds in the Lhasa river watershed of Tibet Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China, is not well documented. Here we report on recent observations of birds made during the winter season (November–March). Combining these observations with earlier records shows that at least 115 species occur in the Lhasa river watershed and adjacent Yamzho Yumco lake during the winter. Of these, at least 88 species appear to occur regularly and 29 species are represented by only a few observations. We recorded 18 species not previously noted during winter. Three species noted from Lhasa in the 1940s, Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata, Solitary Snipe Gallinago solitaria and Red-rumped Swallow Hirundo daurica, were not observed during our study. Black-necked Crane Grus nigricollis (Vulnerable) and Bar-headed Goose Anser indicus are among the more visible species in the agricultural habitats which dominate the valley floors. There is still a great deal to be learned about the winter birds of the region, as evidenced by the number of apparently new records from the last 15 years.     OUR JOURNEY TO MEET THE “GOLDEN CHILD” October 8, 2010 By Michael Erlewine Although today it seems like some far off dream, only a few short years ago I was high in the mountains of Tibet at Tsurphu Monastery (the seat of the Karma Kagyu Lineage), where I met His Holiness Urgyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. All of this is even more remarkable since my friends know that I hate airplanes and seldom travel far from my home in mid-Michigan. Although I have been interested in Buddhism for many years, I never seriously considered going to Tibet. Then suddenly, in less than a month, I am in Tibet, along with my wife, two daughters, and young son. How does such an event happen to a middle-aged businessman? It happens when your lama tells you to go to Tibet as soon as we could manage it. Here is our story: My wife and I are long-time students of Khenpo Karthar, Rinpoche, the abbot of KTD (Karma Triyana Dhamachakra) Monastery. Rinpoche was sent to the U.S. in the mid 1970s by His Holiness, Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa, to represent the Karma Kagyu Lineage in the United States. Just as the Dalai Lama is the head of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, so the Gyalwa Karmapa is the head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. And incidentally, the Karmapa’s lineage (stemming from Marpa and Milarepa) is the older lineage, with His Holiness the Karmapa representing the first tulku (reincarnated lama) in the history of Tibet, and all other reincarnations of this sort being subsequent to the Karmapas.

    TIBET INSIGHT NEWS, 1-15 FEBRUARY 2020 1 TAR NEWS New PSB directive mandates ‘zero distance’ between police and people in TAR February 14, 2020 The Central Public Security Bureau (PSB) issued a new directive mandating the Police Headquarters in TAR to launch a new propaganda campaign entitled ‘One million policemen into ten million homes’ and asking it to maintain ‘zero distance’ between the police and the people. Launched on January 14, 2020, the new campaign is scheduled to end by December 2020. The Tibet Entry-Exit Border Inspection Station organized a meeting in this connection and discussed the overall deployment activities to be carried out in TAR. It was decided that grassroot civilian police units would enter into all aspects of a community, into pastoral areas, monasteries, nunneries, campuses, market, construction sites, homes, border areas, and ‘mingle’ closely with the common people. The grassroot civilian police units were asked to grasp the root causes of a ‘problem/risk’ and conduct preventive measures accordingly. Damshung County of Chengguan District, Lhasa started the campaign on February 14, under the leadership of the Tashi, Director of the Damshung Public Security Bureau and Secretary of the local Political and Legal Committee. At a deployment meeting he told local Township police units that to carry out the campaign they should enter into village groups (including virtual ones like WeChat), monasteries, nunneries, campuses and entrepreneurial sites. He added that the Township police units should keep as close contact as possible with the people, ensure their safety and maintain stability in the region. After the deployment meeting, policemen of Damshung County packed rice, dumplings and other necessities and went to their respective jurisdictions to conduct the campaign.

    The Story of Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa Michael Levin I am going to tell you a story, the life story of Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa. He is quite young and in good health, so this story is hopefully ongoing. His story will tell you something about the repression and politics of the Chinese occupation of Tibet, and also about the culture and politics of the Tibetan exile community in India. It also touches on why Tibetan Buddhism has been successfully transplanted to North America and Europe, and why this offers hope for the eventual restoration of Tibet’s spiritual heritage to its homeland. It will not be possible to explain Buddhism in the short time that we have. Perhaps we can talk about that later in this course. For now, it would be very helpful to keep in mind that most popular ideas about Buddhism are incorrect, and that having an open attitude of not knowing and not having too many opinions would be very helpful. Ogyen Trinley Dorje was born on June 26, 1985 in eastern Tibet. His parents were poor nomads. His predecessor, Rangjung Rikpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa had died of cancer in a hospital not far from Chicago on November 5, 1981. Ogyen Trinley Dorje was identified as being the 17th Karmapa by Tai Situ Rinpoche when he was seven years old. Tai Situ Rinpoche was living in India at that time in a Tibetan exile community. The Chinese authorities allowed him to travel in Tibet and help conduct the search for the child who would become the 17th Karmapa.

INTRODUCTION The Karmapas and their associated lineages are a transmission line of teachers and meditation masters that began in Tibet 900 years ago. The first Karmapa, Düsum Khyenpa, 1110-1193, was also the first tulku, the very first Tibetan Buddhist teacher to consciously will rebirth. This distinct practice of taking rebirth has since spread to all sects of Tibetan Buddhism. The fame of successive Karmapas' teaching talents spread far and wide and they were invited to teach in the courts of emperors and khans. In the process they accumulated hundreds and sometimes thousands of followers who eventually became tightly organized into a great mobile encampment...a travelling monastery that could reach isolated villages and groups of nomads. Some of the Karmapas, their disciples, and teachers were highly revered artists and as they and their students crossed the vast environments of central and eastern Asia they developed a unique way of combining traditional schools of Buddhist iconography with elements of Chinese landscape painting. This became known as the Karma Gadri or Encampment style.
