Once they ar- rived, their tour included the WWI memorial, a GM plant that builds Malibus and the new Cadillac SUV. The highlight of their stops was the Aramcast Studebaker Museum. They were able to see what is likely one of the greatest collections of rare and vintage in the country. Most of the collection came from an old dealership in the area. The last stop was the Riviera show held at the Double Tree, Hilton in Over- land Park KS.

28 Car Show & Cruise Guide Cars that never made it to the FUTURE 1947 Davis Divian

The Davis Divan is a three-wheeled convertible built by the Davis Motorcar Company between 1947 and 1949. The brainchild of used-car salesman Glen Gordon “Gary” Davis, it was largely based upon “The Californian”, a custom three-wheeled roadster built by future Indianapolis 500 racing car designer Frank Kurtis for Southern Californian millionaire and racer Joel Thorne. After building two prototypes in 1947, Davis em- barked on an aggressive publicity and promotional campaign for the car,. At the company factory in Van Nuys, employees worked frantically to build Divans, although the model was never put into mass production. Despite raising $1.2 million through the sale of 350 dealerships, the Davis Motorcar Company failed to deliver, and was ultimately sued. The company’s assets were liquidated in order to pay back taxes, while Gary Davis himself was eventually convicted of fraud and grand theft and sentenced to two years. Only 13 Divans (including the two prototypes) were ever built, of which 12 have survived. The car featured aircraft-inspired styling details as well as disc brakes, hidden headlights, and built-in jacks.

Jim Wines I met Jim Wines after I acquired an all original ‘57 Chevy and started searching for stuff it needed. Being a great patina car, I didn’t want to use repros, so I didn’t search far before learning that Jim is a local authority on the iconic vehicle.

So, I made a trip to his house in Hickory, Md. and dicovered no less than five buildings stacked to the rafters with ‘57, and we rode in his golf cart through what’s left of a ‘57 boneyard in his backyard. In his home, he converted the original garage into his Man-Cave, complete with a model diner with a booth and Seeburg juke box. Tons of old sig- nage, even a lighted one from a old liquor store that reads”WINES”. His love for the ‘57 Chev was evident with shelves full of scale mod- els, parts books and a dealership display showing the body and interior color combinations that year. Just a great, friendly guy, and of course, he had exactly what I was looking for, cheap. Man, I love car people. – Hutch

Larry Borland’s ‘68 Cougar

My Cougar was purchased in May of 2006 from a friend who was once turned away at a car show because it “wasn’t a muscle car.” Well, if it wasn’t then, it is now, with the original 302 built into a 347 stroker with all the good stuff, and the C4 trans has been beefed up with a TCI street fighter equivalent with 6 planetaries. Original underpin- nings have been replaced with a Mustang II-style rack and Larry at the Karb Kings. pinion, tubular A arms, which required removing the shock towers, oversize disc brakes and The interior has white face gauges and Mustang 17-inch wheels. tach. The steering wheel is a custom piece in which I added the “ Man’’ insignia out of a luxury Merc. I did all the research on all the parts, supplied the mechanical work, welding (and the money!) My friend Ray Quinn powdercoated the axle to match the body, which still sports the original paint. (The red Impala in the photo is one of his many toys). The car turned out just like intended, with a bit of a sleeper vibe, and except for the Steve McQueen “Bullitt” mags, could be mistak- photos by Hutch and Larry ened for a granny grocery-getter.

Out back, I used a 9-inch rear out of a Lincoln Versailles, using just the housing and axles. New 350 gears, Tru-Track Posi, and Chevy disc brakes round out the package. I modified a Mustang 4-link suspesion (the Cougar is 3 inches longer), and added coil over shocks and sway bars. Have a Car or Truck with an interesting story? Or some cool old photos?
