Sanders, in fact, 2005 3-7 3-7 (GLIAC) was the fi rst player in Mercyhurst history (GLIAC or PSAC) to earn Freshman of the 2006 3-7 3-7 (GLIAC) Year accolades. Brown-Dukes set a program record by averaging 117.7 yards rushing 2007 4-7 3-7 (GLIAC) per game in 2012 and fi nished just 19 yards shy of Gerald Anderson’s program record 2008 7-4 5-2 (PSAC) of 1,313 rushing yards in a season - established in 2010. Brown-Dukes fi nished with 2009 4-7 3-4 (PSAC) 1,295 yards rushing and a school record 16 rushing touchdowns. 2010 10-3 6-1 (PSAC) 2011 4-7 2-5 (PSAC) 2012 9-2 6-1 (PSAC) Mercyhurst won the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Team TOTAL 55-66 40-55 of the Year award in 2012 - the second time in three seasons that Mercyhurst claimed the honor.

Under Schaetzle, Mercyhurst has had three winning seasons over the last fi ve years, including the program’s best season in 2010. That year, the Lakers accumulated the most victories in program history (10), claimed their fi rst-ever conference champion- ship with a 56-37 win over Bloomsburg, earned their fi rst-ever NCAA postseason tour- nament berth, and claimed their fi rst-ever NCAA tournament win with a 28-14 victory over Bloomsburg. The season ended with a setback to #18 Shepherd in the NCAA Quarterfi nals at Tullio Field in early December.

Schaetzle surpassed current Director of Athletics Joe Kimball as the longest tenured football coach in program history and his 55 wins are the most ever by a Mercyhurst football coach. Three years ago, Schaetzle broke a victories’ tie with Kimball and Tony DeMeo, the program’s fi rst-ever coach, by capturing win #42 with a 28-14 win over Bloomsburg in the NCAA playoffs. For his efforts in 2010, Schaetzle was named PSAC Coach of the Year, Don Hansen Football Gazette co-Coach of the Year, and was a top fi ve fi nalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. His 2010 squad was also named the Division II Lambert Meadowlands Team of the Year.

The Bison Honorable Mention Josh Szeluga, TE piled up 320 points, the third highest scoring season in school history, and produced the best ground attack in 19 years. The running game averaged 196.6 yards per con- test, the most since the 1980 team averaged 216.9. During his tenure, his linemen earned All-Patriot League honors seven times.

As an offensive lineman, Schaetzle was Bucknell’s team captain in 1982 and gradu- ated from there in 1983. He won the George Rieu Award as the Bison’s outstanding lineman in 1981 and 1982. He also won the 1983 Edward Pangburn Award, given to a senior athlete for “sportsmanship, fellowship, and contribution to the university.” Schaetzle played high school football at St. Francis Prep for Vinny O’Connor. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and also serves on a profes- sional development committee.
