    Media interest in Virginia Tech football and Coach Frank Beamer swelled during Tech’s 11-0 regular season in 1999 and the Hokies’ appearance in the Sugar Bowl national championship game. What Is a Hokie? That’s the most often-asked question in Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. The official school colors — Chicago maroon and burnt orange — also were introduced in 1896. They were chosen because they made a “unique combination” not worn elsewhere at the time. Spirit units at Virginia Tech include (clockwise, from top left) the HighTechs dance team; the Hokies’ lovable mascot, the HokieBird; the cheerleading squads; the Marching Virginians band, known as “the Spirit of Tech”; and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets regimental band, the Highty-Tighties. Tech and Texas A&M are the only two schools in the country with a full-time corps of cadets as part of a larger civilian student body.     Hello Prospective MV Trumpet! The 2018 Trumpet Leadership would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Virginia Tech and congratulate you on becoming a Hokie! We are excited that you have chosen to audition for the Marching Virginians, and even more excited that you have chosen to audition for the trumpet section. Being a member of the Marching Virginians is an experience unlike any other at Virginia Tech. You will find yourself surrounded by students dedicated to academics, community service, and of course, Hokie Pride. As a section, we are made up of passionate, positive individuals that support each other and love what we do. It takes hard work and dedication to be a part of this ensemble and you will be rewarded with life-long friendships and the unique ability to represent Virginia Tech on a national stage. The band is passionate about much more than just Hokie Football. The Marching Virginians have been appropriately labeled as the Spirit of Tech because the band is dedicated to both pumping up the crowds on game day as well as promoting the school’s motto, Ut Prosim (that I may serve), by reaching out to the community. The MV’s are involved with service projects such as “Hokies for the Hungry” as well as many other small volunteer performances throughout the year. Contributing to these efforts in addition to getting the fans excited about the team is a truly fulfilling experience. Signing up for the Marching Virginians is a large time commitment and we are looking for talented individuals who bring energy and enthusiasm to every performance.

    FACILITIES Lane Stadium has undergone major expansion and renovation over the past few years, and with the completion of the new west side in 2005, it will be one of the nation’s best college football arenas INAUGURAL SEASON IN THE ACC VirginiaVirginia Tech’s Tech’s All-Americans Building Boom When it comes to athletic facilities, Virginia Tech’s Director Infi nity-Tof Athletics, BI Jim Weaverwhite has a simple stroke, philosophy — “as fi soon ll 60 percent, no caps as you sit still in terms of facilities, you have taken a step backward.” It has become clear that Virginia Tech has no intention of sitting still on the facilities front. There is a continuous stream of improvements underway or in the planning process in the athletics complex. A number of projects have recently concluded while several larger en deav ors loom on the horizon. The Virginia Tech athletics department is living up to Jim Weaver’s challenge to constantly enhance its facilities. Here are a few examples: • The recently completed Eddie Ferrell Me mo ri al Training Room is a 4,300 square-foot facility that gives the athletic trainers a centralized area to provide physical therapy, chiropractic care and massage therapy to Tech student-athletes. • The Lane Stadium south end zone expansion (below) consists of 11,100 new seats, 15 luxury suites, two club areas, four television camera stations, a new visitor’s locker room that can be split in half and used for the spring sports, new storage rooms and new media interview rooms. • The remodelling of Lane Stadium’s west side (above) is underway.
